I personally like it when comedies take things to the absolute extremes, like in saiki k or kaguya (which is my favourite romantic comedy). Saiki k takes troupes, pushes them to extremes, and then puts the characters into mundane situations, its so stupid and I love it. It also helps that a lot of these shows just move on and don't talk about how ridiculous the situation actually is.

I mean, I've watched the whole thing four times or so and I don't remember any outside of a small gag involving a spider, which I don't really count as that's not the joke. Using boob jokes as some kind of barometer of an entire culture's comedy is beyond stupid. It really made me feel touched that so many people all over the world can all like the same things. Quick question to any fan out there: Which episode was your favorite, and how did you get past any confusing jokes/references? One of my favorite comedy-focused episodes was the funeral one (episode 231), but I feel it has a lot of cultural references on how funeral processions work here so I wasn't sure if the comedy resonates. With Straightman characters, I think it’s also important that they also descend into complete tomfoolery from time to time. In Konosuba, Kazuma is a straightman for everyone else’s shenanigans w/ his deadpan moments-then he turns around and does the most outlandish, ludicrous, and diabolical things. In Komi Can’t Communicate, Tadano is often dragged into the bits he’s supposed to straightman for and gets carried away to the point he’s not even a straightman anymore. Even in Western comedies like Eric Andre’s show has a straightman (Hannibal) who alternates between being a straightman and being a straight menace

But the Saiki K dub is one of the best dubs ever. The only advantage the sub has is the yare yare reference. And the dub itself has advantages too. Saiki in the dub has a much more pained and annoyed voice than the Japanese version, in other words, it's just straight up better casting.

I can easily say that Great Teacher Onizuka changed my life. I first watched it when I was 12, still watch or read it occationally. Personally, it made me laugh so many times that I lost count. Aside from the comedy aspect, it is real as it gets. No elemental powers, no jutsu's, no girls flinging around the protagonist. It is about an ex-biker who wants to be a teacher because of the thought of dating a teenager; however, he changes the lives of many troubled students (and peers) in a much better way. It is inspirational (I am a private tutor now thanks to it), hilarious af, and yet very real and sad from time to time. I absolutely recommend it to everyone.

Saiki K is forever gonna be my favorite comedy, and I'm so happy it's been getting the recognition it deserves, with plenty of people using it as an example of a great comedy. But man oh man I was not prepared to see Hinamatsuri in the top, the most underrated show of all time. I'm so happy I happened across it when it was just starting to come out since watching just one episode is a very small commitment, or else I would have put it off like every other show. I was counting the days for each new episode of that show, and then I caught up on the manga and did the same with that until it ended. Anyone who hasn't seen Hinamatsuri needs to, right now! I've made people who don't like slice of life watch it and they've all enjoyed it, please just try it for god's sake it's so underrated.

@@mizonami1934Gonna assume you're referring to Saiki since you said two seasons..? I don't have the time nor patience to sit here and try to explain comedy and how things that are hilarious to some won't be for others. I'm sorry but I have better things to do than try to guess which part of the show isn't clicking for you 😅 In my opinion, the characters are great, they all fall into tropes and cliches sure, but they're far from one dimensional. The whole point of the characters is that they're all typical anime-tropes either taken to the extreme or with a fun twist. And Saiki's deadpan commentary as he reluctantly lets himself get dragged along is a beautiful contrast to the high-energy antics the rest of the cast gets up to. As for why it's not making you laugh I have no idea, but for me and plenty of other people it's a very special anime that never fails to make me laugh when I revisit it 🤷♀️ either way go watch hinamatauri

@@Hcnirgawonsaiki k isn’t all that bro. The show can be funny, especially that one girl who’s obsessed with herself(blue hair I forgot the name). It’s a decent comedy anime but the problem I found when I watched a bit of it, is the fact that the characters are more annoying than funny. Especially saikis dumbass friend. Having dumb characters like that who exist just for the sake of being stupid feel extremely one dimensional. Exaggerating tropes can be very funny but only up to a certain point. Prison school, konosuba, cautious hero are funnier than saiki k. Konosuba is my favourite comedy anime, they exaggerate common isekai tropes in a way where it’s funny but not too annoying. Cautious hero does this as well. Eminence of shadow is less of a comedy but it still exaggerated tropes in a way where it’s funny and not annoying. If it’s to the point where an entire characters personality revolves around one joke than in my opinion it makes the comedy repetitive and annoying.
@Hcnirgawon Жыл бұрын
@@Chris_CO And again this just supports what I said about everyone having different taste. While Konosuba made me giggle here and there, Saiki is one of very few shows to make me fully laugh several times per episode. And again, the characters are great in my opinion?? Nendo is lovingly stupid, but also incredibly nice and has a few wholesome moments you don't expect from that type of character. Teruhashi starts out like an extreme "pretty girl" just wanting Saiki to fall for her, but by the end she starts genuinely liking him and wanting to be around him since he's the only person who treats her like a human. I can go on, but those were the characters you mentioned. We'll just have to accept that we have different taste honestly, that's not a bad thing, just wanted to explain how I see the show :]

I actually dislike the inherent art style of the average basic anime (not the ones above who have distinct styles), and there's many tropes that bother me at a point where it stops me from fully enjoying everything (I caught on to the things weebs complain about- basic MCs, harems, unnecessary ecchi, same face syndrome, mistreatment of female characters, etc pretty early). "Cute" anime girls also piss me off, they're just annoying to me. So I think I don't demonise those who love anime, it can be a great medium, but I'm not entrenched in the culture either.

As a Japanese guy that likes comedy and anime, I'd say it actually is cultural differences that hinders most western audience from enjoying the Japanese comedy First, execution is just as important as the joke itself in comedy. Even the most boring jokes could be funny when said by the right person the right way. This is a problem with translated media in general because translations just kill the original flow and execution of jokes. This is why shows like Nichijou is loved by the western community despite not doing well in Japan, most of the jokes are absurd visuals which transcends the need to read the subs to get the jokes. Second, the existence of straight man. I know so many non-Japanese people hate these straight mans in anime, complaining that they make the joke worse like mentioned in the video. But that's just how Japanese jokes are structured. Majority of the popular comedians in Japan are pairs of boke and tsukkomi, joker and straight man, and Japanese people just likes comedy served that way. To tell you the truth, good straight mans *are* actually pretty rare in anime, but when done right, they don't just explain the jokes but rather recontexualize the joke into another obscure perspective that makes it a lot funnier than jokes executed without them. And lastly, the joke types we like are just completely different. Like I know this is just a single person's opinion but I watched some comedy shows this video mentioned as positive western examples (Boondock, South Park, Ghost Story dub), and I didn't laugh a single time to any of those shows, it just never lands for me. Fundamentally the jokes we yearn for is just completely different and that's fine. Doesn't really make one superior over another though.
@userusernomi2 жыл бұрын
thank you! I wrote a whole ass essay about this in another comment because I don't think he understands the point of a straight man character. He even likes a lot of anime that use that trope heavily, it makes no sense! Saiki Kusuo plays a straight man most of the time, Mio does it very often in Nichijou too. Saying that the trope is never funny is super contradictory on his part. Imagine trashing my boy Shinpachi thinking Gintama would ever be as funny without him.

Great comment. I’m a native English speaker that moved to Japan and I learned to speak Japanese relatively fluidly, but whenever I watch things with my Japanese friends I often laugh when they don’t, and they’ll laugh when I didn’t even understand a joke was being made. A lot of the humor I *have* learned to understand just does not translate into English without a bulky explanation, which is both impossible and unfunny to include with subs

Honestly, I’d say Asobi Asobase was the funniest anime I’ve watched. Not the best, but if I were to gauge the number of times I laughed until I choked to the number of episodes as a ratio, it’d probably be the highest. And I’ve seen all the anime mentioned here except Saiki K. (Will get around to it) I personally have nothing against the Japanese straight man, but I do get why some people don’t like the trope. I’d give my ‘Best’ vote to Gintama. But I will say Kaguya sama was the best romantic comedy and I highly doubt it will be dethroned any time soon as it managed to nail an amazing balance between romance and comedy. The romance felt genuine and sweet while the comedy was genuinely funny and both elements never really felt like they overshadowed the other which I feel is a common issue with rom-com anime.

I will happily admit that kaguya probably is the best, but i just love saiki. The characters all being the most extreme version of their archetype really just lends itself so well to the comedy while still allowing for personal quirks and realistic challenges. Like how Hairo the sports guy just always radiates heat because he's so intense, leading to jokes about how he's drenched in sweat in the first round, his intense rivalry with nendou despite nendou not caring or even knowing about the rivalry. There's also a healthy dose of self awareness. And i can understand how one punch man hits some of the same notes, but with more action.

Bruh it's like 85% of Japanese authors are just talentless but somehow managed to get an adaptation to their bs or they copy each other so they produce the same shit over and over again (that's why most anime are literally the same but with a twist). Why is a 49yr old man making panty jokes about middle schoolers anyway?😭
@seimopie23042 жыл бұрын
@@Kumorini Well, calling writers/animators "talentless" is subjective. Yes, it's true that certain anime look and feel the same as plenty others, but it's the market that's driving copies and look-alikes.. Many studios just care about the money-making aspect and jump on with what's popular and successful. Just look at hollywood movies/shows and video games as examples!
