Did CPR on my wife going on two years ago. Unfortunately, she was down too long. Broke some ribs, but let's review, break ribs on someone with fairly advanced osteoporosis performing CPR, let them die. Hmmm, bones can heal, dead won't heal. Cop came with AED, it didn't speak about a shock once, giving a bit hint, EMT-P arrived and plugged in the monitor and there wasn't even PEA. They continued fruitlessly for another 20 minutes, despite my saying it wasn't going to be effective by then, 42 year marriage ended. Wasn't my first CPR rodeo, just my saddest.

I still remember the first time I did CPR on someone before paramedics arrived. I had just finished EMT school, even though I missed a month or so because of a massive head injury, so I was working at walmart while recovering. I was in the back room, and the over head speakers said they needed anyone who could do CRP to come to the break room. Without really even thinking, I start booking it to the break room, I'm dodging and weaving through crowds of people, I think I vaulted over a pallet that was in my way (Felt so much like real life assassin's creed.) When I got to the break room, the hiring manager saw me, he put so much pressure on me because he said to let me in because I used to be a paramedic... No, I just finished EMT school dude, haven't even taken my NREMT, but thanks for putting all that pressure on me to take full control of a situation I've never dealt with. Needless to say, that was terrifying. I felt for his pulse, nothing, I think? I'm internally freaking out a bit at this point. Well, nobody else has a pulse? He's clearly unresponsive and not breathing, it's time to do CPR. First two compressions I feel little pops. There goes the cartilage! Keep going until paramedics arrive, okay, time to get the fuck out the way and let the pros take over on this one. I was shaking with adrenaline. Dude did end up making it though, so that was really awesome. That is a day I don't think I'll ever forget.

As I used to be a lifeguard I love this video. But they missed the CLASSIC CPR dummy joke. In my job the 65 year old life guard Miguel would do this joke everytime we did a recert or when we did our weekly practice. Its simple, all you do is 1. get paired up in your group. 2. Walk up too and stand next to your CPR dummy 3. look at the dummy then at you partners. 4. say "do we want to resuscitate this guy/girl? I mean he has no arms or legs and I don't think his eyes even open. What quality of life are we bringing him back to" 5. Enjoy the laughter or get looks of disappointment. Which for everyone wondering, Miguel never got annoying. It was ALWAYS hilarious. Ohh and the chorus beat for staying alive works perfectly for chest compression rate. if you really want a funny reaction from the guy who gains conscious while your doing CPR. The beat from another one bites also works perfectly.

They happily crowed "It'll do anything that a living patient does, drugs administered will be reflected in vitals, pupils react according to scenario, it'll swell up appropriate to scenario, it'll even piss". I replied back, "Yeah, but it won't cuss you out or do everything a real patient does". The instructor crowed, "Oh, but I can speak through the mike and cuss you out". Yeah, but it can't haul off and slug you one. He was crestfallen, it couldn't haul off and hit the poor soul treating it. Never managed to kill it, despite them socking it to me in ways even physicians had trouble with. And boy, some of the scenarios were nightmares!

I'm going for retraining with new job next month, last time I did a first aid course was 2012. I'm glad lip locking is gone because I almost failed that part as I kept getting the giggles because someone drew angry eyebrows on our rescue dummy. We also got taught to verbally check for responsiveness and then to also pinch the ear if there was no reaction, in case you had a deaf person in front of you. Also if you do the classic "somebody call and ambulance!" Herd mentality kicks in and nobody does, or everybody does and takes up too many lines. Point out one person and assign the task; "You, in the blue shirt, ring 999!"

What I had never been told is that the patient may appear to start breathing after a few compressions. Turns out the guy's heart was borked, but the rest of the body was merely "on standby" as it were, so when that blood started flowing, he drew a couple of really deep breaths. And then the breathing became shallower awfully quick. Heart still borked, after all. Luckily, that's when the paramedics arrived. To date, I'm not really sure if I did everything right, but there was some comfort in the fact that he had drawn breath, reducing the risk of brain damage. As far as I know, he made a full recovery.

Thank you for this. People have so many misconceptions about CPR. I think everyone should be trained in it and also carry Narcan. It doesn't take a lot to intervene in a potentially deadly situation. Stop being bystanders! I'd love to see a video on the best way to make a 911 call. I was taught that the first thing you should do is say the address clearly and then state the emergency so that if you're disconnected they can play back the tape and find you. I'd like to hear your input on this

in my training for CPR, when it came up about hurting someone or breaking their ribs, it was explained beautifully - you are working on a dead person at this point. So you have nothing to lose.

We had ems volunteers teach cpr and first aid to the kids at my high school but misguided or misinformed parents shut it down. I honestly think it was the only thing I did in high school that could actually save a life and ppl killed it. Thanks for the great videos!!

Some parents shut down CPR / First Aid lessons at a high school…??? WFT for??? Those parents DID give everyone a REALLY GOOD LESSON themselves though… It’s this one: “The life lesson that there are people who are SO stupid AND selfish, that there is NO limit to their INSANE BEHAVIOR!”

Thanks so much for this! My mom looked up fruits and vegetables in the dictionary years ago and the LEGAL definition is: fruits are what you eat before or after the main course of the meal, and vegetables are what you eat during the main course of the meal. So the carrots in your salad and the sweet potato pie you have for desert are fruits, and the pineapple and cherries on your ham are vegetables. Of course, as Charles Dickens wrote, "If the law thinks that, the law is an ass."

Fruit is a botanical category, while vegetable is a culinary category. So a tomato, for example, is both a vegetable AND a fruit.

Oh man I absolutely love the way your brain works 😂 how could anyone possibly be that good at making jokes about the very serious things like CPR or a person in the situation that should save lives for the first time and never had any experience before and… I mean it’s not that you make jokes about the death or anything like that but it’s genius to say and teach people about those serious stuff with a lot of sense of humor and make them laugh but help them to learn and be responsible for that kind of situation at the same time. I love you so much

I was in an airport recently and they had a CPR kiosk in there. I remembered this video and tried to put the compressions to song, but I kept missing either the beat or depth. My best run was me simply repeating "One. Two. One. Two." in my head.

I am a CPR instructor. My previous job, I worked for 911. And I am glad that the dispatchers are trained to go step by step to help the caller. I remember a lady calling 911 asking g for an ambulance because she thought someone was dead. As I was going through the checklist. I heard her said she is certified to do the chest pump thingy and I can push on the guys chest. I heard the patien5 yell out hell no your not pushing on my chest. Oh brother. I told the bystanders don't do anything and the ambulance is on the way. Just make sure he does not go unconscious.

One of the hardest things to get over is the fact that Staying Alive shouldn’t be used for pacing yourself when doing CPR, not only because it’s what we’ve all been taught in even basic CPR courses in schools but because what the hell are you supposed to time yourself to if not a song literally called Staying Alive?
