It really shows how much Walden needs Alan even tho he doesn’t offer anything but it also shows that he’s afraid of being alone without his friends and family and his fear of the future

It probably stems from him being kicked out of his own place from being codependent with his wife, to the point of being so desperate and alone that je was going to drown himself in the ocean, to have at the same time, met a guy who was codependent on his brother who had just died and regardless of the jabs and annoyances, makes Walden feel needed and like he's important to someone. Then, with that being the foundation of their relationship, it just went from their. Kind of like when a baby Bird imprints on something that isn't its mother, out of its need to survive. Alan just happened to give Walden exactly what he needed at exactly the right time... then continued to do so.
