Comeng Fleet Update (Mid 2024)

The Comengs are still a good train to ride. They're not in bad nick considering their age. I wonder what is preventing the retrofit of buttons to the Comeng doors like all other trains?

one time when i was catching a comeng on the craigieburn line, i was at broadmeadows station and saw the doors closing and someone was running but missed it. But then another person was walking by and forced open the door and so they were let in. But then the train didnt move for the next 3 minutes which was weird and the door wasnt closing. Then, the driver announced the train was faulty and we all had to get off and wait for the next train which was in 20 minutes. It was so annoying and that one traveler who didnt want to miss the train caused everywhere to catch the next one. I hope the doors of the comeng are fixed now😭😭😭😭😭

Hopefully they learnt their lesson, and their fellow passengers let them know exactly their opinions on that action during the 20 minute wait. Metro is getting more strict with taking trains out of service for door interference / potential faults

Gave the doors a shot when they changed the knobs out 10 years ago, still easy to force, someone gotta see if the new one is actually effective.

I have also been told that Comengs will be fully back on the cross-city group after the have received the emergency door release upgrade Comeng have become more common on the cross-city group

@@markspublictransportvideos8429 yeah I play tennis on courts that have the Frankston line as a neighbour and have seen countless Comengs running up and down as recently as yesterday so looks like they are back.

I live near the Craigieburn Line so I ride them twice a day at least 2 days a week...sometimes 3 times per week.

I'm amazed they aren't offering electric Comeng trains to the Adelaide Metro given that they are the same train as their diesel sets.

The reason why is because Adelaide runs their trains on 25kv AC. Where as Melbourne runs their trains on 1500v DC

Would be cool if they electrified the tracks around Geelong, Bendigo, & Ballarat then used Comeng there (cheaper as new rolling stock isn’t needed just electrified track is needed)

@reubenab6005 I agree. Also, Tasmania needs trains back. They should reopen the line that runs from Burnie to Launceston, Launceston to Hobart. They have great Hydro. It's insane that they gave away trains.

I remember being surprised when told the Harris trains were on borrowed time due to rust, cracks and asbestos. In the ‘80s they had been running for forty years. Now the Comeng trains have been running for forty years. Tait trains retired in the mid-1980s had been running for sixty years due to underfunding railways by a succession of governments. Eventually it would become more expensive to maintain old technology. I had thought that disposing of the last ten carsets due to asbestos brakes was just a pretext for getting rid of them, perhaps transport minister Steve Crabb wanted to be the minister for scrapping Tait trains. They were auctioned with the money going to preservation groups, Crabb was surprised at how much the cars were sold for.

I just can’t get over Comeng sounding like an X’trap.. it sounds rather scary to me and makes me feel a little sick (specially hearing it with the doors). The RVB 3 Chime was just too iconic to replace. I wish they replaced them with a synthetic electronic horn which is modelled to sound like the RVB’s just a bit louder to comply. But there is only so much that can happen, that idea is all but a fantasy.. they’d sound a little flat but better if anything. So much has gone on that I never realised, was rather pleasant seeing this.

im sure not every single comeng train set will get scrapped bc when they retire old trains such as vline n sets, harris emus, adelaide 2000 class cars and a lot more theres always some preserved examples so what i think will happen is 1 edi comeng carriage is taken to newport railway msm and then an alstom car is also placed there

Bombardier/Alstom Aventras kinda suck Their ride quality is absolutely diabolical, shaking not just up and down but also side to side. (which would be even worse on Melbourne quality track) Also their reliability is mediocre and not as good as the Siemens Desiro trains and all members of the family entered service late (some over 4 years late) and many are still not in service yet. They have horrible ironing board seats that aren't comfortable to sit on at all. The announcements and door alarms are obnoxiously loud and in general the train feels poorly designed. Also they're really boring trains and nowhere as epic as the Comeng trains I'd rather see more HCMTs enter service

Given the tradition of the old horns now relegated to history, so too should the needless use of them. It's unnecessary, and is disturbing for those that live near train lines. Cry wolf, anyone? The door handles are torture. I have arthritis so I have to use two hands to try and open the doors. It's unnecessary, and it's ableist. Love the Comeng, thanks for your efforts to provide us with updates 🛤️

on Sunday, I rode an edi comeng set from glenroy (intending to go to flinders street) but due to a door failure, the train terminated at Moonee Ponds, the only time I've ever seen a train terminate at Moonee Ponds

What I've seen, the Frankston line has a mix of all types. The Comeng's, Siemens and the X'Trapolis fleets. I think the Frankston line is just getting the Northern group overflow of Comeng trains in case of an X'Trap or Siemens is at Newport or Westall being serviced/refurbished

There are a few siemens on the northern group, usually on weekdays, although the majority are comengs

Rather sad about the horn replacement. The new horns sound like the Xtrap ones which are very harsh sounding.

I'm disappointed when a Comeng rolls up to board. More disappointed when I get a seat with the air compressor shaking violently underneath it. Sorry to say but, now that the old sociable sounding horns have been replaced I'm not gonna miss the Comeng when they're gone.

if the air compressor starts vibrating then move to the T car, you won't get it there
