Isaiah 40 opens with the famous prophetic words, “Comfort ye, comfort ye, My people!” Many of us have become familiar with these words through Handel’s Messiah. But what is the historical background for Isaiah’s message of comfort? In this lesson, Dr. Warren Gage gives an overview of the devastation that the kingdom of Judah witnessed in 586 BC when King Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians led them into captivity. What would it have been like to see the Temple of Solomon in flames, the Babylonians slaughtering the princes of Judah, and blood flowing in the streets? Isaiah 40 reminds us that, whatever political calamities we encounter in our country and our world, the Word of God will stand forever. This is the second lesson in Dr. Warren Gage’s series on the book of Isaiah.
Dr. Warren Gage is a biblical scholar known for showing how every story in the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, points to Christ. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve been reading the Bible for your entire life or you’re just beginning. His teaching will give you an entirely new appreciation for the beauty of the Scripture and the depth of Christ’s redemptive love for you.
