Hey, cool video. I have started to take an interest into comics but I don't know where to start. Do you have any suggestions on good comics or trade paper backs to start with? Superheros that I like is batman green lantern, and the flash.
@JernosComicsPopCulture4 жыл бұрын
You have so many ways to start! First off, it's going to be all about preference, and what speaks to you. But there are different ways you can go with these characters. If you want something fresh and newer, starting with the New 52 books isn't a bad option. I particularly enjoyed most of those runs, and you don't need to really read anything that came before it. But if you want to go back even further, Flash's 1987 series is a good starting point, and Frank Millar's Batman Year One (1985 I believe?) is an amazing storyline for Batman. I also enjoyed the "Batman: Legend of the Dark Knight" series that came out in the 80s. I am not too big on Green lantern, but one even that he was heavily involved in was Darkest Night/Brightest Day stories, which cam out before New 52, but was a really well written story. Hope this helps!

I haven't collected comic books since I was very young but I seem to recall that the bags back then were made of polyethylene. Am I imagining things? I use polyethylene sleeves on my vinyl LPs, and they are 3 mil thick, they are softer and though not as clear as polypropylene (which is what you're demonstrating) they have stronger seams and don't wrinkle as easily as these polypropylene bags. Wondering if anyone uses polyethylene bags on their comic books?
@JernosComicsPopCulture3 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct! And yes, PE are much more durable and don't wrinkle as much. The problem with them is that they do not keep out gases as good as PP bags, and PE break down a lot faster. They yellow and can stain your books as well if you don't switch them out.

Hi Chris. Been going through some of your older videos and came across this one and noticed you recommend painter's tape a lot. I'm not sure if this is a good idea because masking tape (I believe painter's tape is a type of masking tape) will dry out and can't be easily removed after several months of time.
@JernosComicsPopCulture3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out so many vids. Painters tape is very different than masking tape. I've had painters tape on some of my books for years, and it has never dried out or lost its 'stick.' It's the best option most importantly because if you ever get it stuck on your comic book, it will peel off without doing any damage to the book. Every other type of tape will leave a 'tape pull.'

Chris. Great video as usual. My question is how do you store your thicker giant size annual type comics in mylar. I know BCW sells " Thick" bags but I've never seen anything like that in mylar. Thank you, Jim
@JernosComicsPopCulture3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Jim! Silver age Mylar will hold some annuals, but if they are 80 pages or more, I usually use the Golden age Mylar.

I use BCW and don't have the wrinkle problem you seem to have not sure why
@JernosComicsPopCulture4 жыл бұрын
The wrinkled ones are Ultra Pro. Most of my BCW don't get like that, like the Rebirth Batman Beyond book I showed off. This is why over the last two years I have been actively stating to stay away from Ultra Pro and stick with BCW.

I just switched to Comic Pro Line with a heavier board for rigidness for my personal collection.. Was using ultra Pro resealable. ok for store boxes...

currenlty in the process of going through and rebagging and reboarding all of my older comics. have been having trouble getting the BCW products, have you used the E. Gerber bags and boards
@JernosComicsPopCulture3 жыл бұрын
I do! I buy my Mylar in bulk from E Gerber themselves. I will also buy fullbacks from them, but I only use those for my key books.

What do you think of the self sealing bags like, Comicare bags , l just ordered 400 B&B for $115. I get fed up of the wrinkly bags.

If any poly bag doesn't have the right size board for me, then I'm going to have a weird feeling about the way they feel and look. But those are good because you don't have tape on the flap when pulling out your books.

Ive always found the current size bags and board fit to tight on bronze age. That's my issues
@JernosComicsPopCulture3 жыл бұрын
In 1974, comics were cut slightly to a smaller width. It happened when the books were at 25 cent cover price. Anything after this will fit perfectly into current bags, but anything before it will definitely be way too tight and it could ruin your books.
@figuredrawing49123 жыл бұрын
What do you recommend for modern books in terms of material and size? What about this combination: 7 1/4" BCW 2 Mil Silver Comic Mylar & BCW Backing Boards, 7 x 10 1/2", Silver. I normally use modern size poly bags but I don't like the tightness... What do you recommend? Or......if I use BCW 7" Current Age Archival Mylar 2 Mil Polyester Comic Book Bags, should a BCW Modern 6 x 5/8" work?
@JernosComicsPopCulture3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. If you don't like tightness, then my set up might not be to your liking. I use a 7 1/8 standard board with my silver age mylars (7 1/4). I feel it's a perfect fit. It's not so tight that it bends the bag. For modern 7" Mylar, I use a 6 and 7/8 inch BCW board (I think they are called Regular, but I'm not sure off the top of my head). If I use poly bags, I'll by the BCW Current THICK bags (7") and use the same BCW 6 7/8 inch board. When using full backs for the silver age mylar, I have e gerber custom cut the boards to 7 1/10 inch.

I agree with the bcw bags feeling more robust I have not tried Ultra guard bags and don’t know what there like

Which bcw board did you use? And i can't find any 7 inchs bcw bags... Do you think 7¼ bags and 7 boards would work?
@JernosComicsPopCulture4 жыл бұрын
Look up "BCW Thick Current" bags. Those are 7 inch in width and they fit perfect with 6 7/8 boards. You can definitely use 7 inch boards with 7 1/4 bags, but there is going to be some wiggle room on the sides.

is the 7 inch board considered a silver bag or a bronze bag ?

A 7 inch board will fit into a silver age bag, or Ultra Pro's "Regular" bags, which are 7 1/8 inch.

Jerno: There's more than one way to bag and board, dude. For example, I don't throw away the paper bag from my homemade PJs for lunch. Almost all my comics are in used lunch bags, and I get by fine. Oh yeah, you can get 4 boards out of one (1!) pizza box. I know. Thank me later. You'll get so you never see the bottom row of comics again, but whatever it takes for quality storage, I'm there. You don't even have to say you got the idea from me. -Til next time.
