Random thought… what if you made s as aluminum sheets that clamp together(larger than the heat press)? Maybe with butterfly nuts so it doesn’t clamp down too tight. Then you could press a comic in the encasement and just remove the whole thing to cool while you place another encased comic into the press? You can say it’s a dumb idea. I’m trying to learn and your videos are great.

the brands dont really matter that much. just use a spring press instead of a fulcrum press so you don't pop staples!

Hi Rick. Couple questions... I have a 10" x 12" press and wondering if I could use your 12" x 12" aluminum sheets for it with no problems. I guess an inch worth will be sticking out. Or would it be better to use 9" x 12"? Do I need to get a custom size to exactly match my press dimensions? Also, you said to possibly put a "magazine board" in between the book and the sheet. Do you mean one of your chamfered mag size boards or a regular magazine backing board? Thanks. Just getting into all this and happy to have your channel and shop!

Hi and thanks for writing! yes you can definitely used a slightly larger board with no problems in the press. I can also have custom 10x12 boards cut and polished for you if you like. With custom cuts they would be $25.50 each in 0.90" thickness. However you can use 12x12 just fine with no problems. I actually mean any magazine size board and not necessarily a chamfered board. I used an mdf board with 20lbs stacked on top of it. Other pressers say not much weight is needed. What are your thoughts?

I did a few designed experiments and found that for large-scale waviness, which I call "macroform" or "mesoform" waves you only need about 2 lbs across a standard size book. More weight isnt better as it impedes gas diffusion from the book to allow acid gases to escape. If you are relieving microform defects then you should use about 40-60ln in a heat press. Thats my two cents worth anyway

Hi Rick, would there be any disadvantage to using 12"x12" aluminum sheets with 12"x15" heat press?

If there is more pressure on the outside of the board than the inside the board will have less pressure in the. Isle and it will be uneven. You cannot see this with your Eye but imagine the board taking in a convex shape in your imagination. For most applications you won’t notice this. Only in very detailed pressing work of fine structures in the center of a book will you notice.

@@mtlhd1 yes absolutely you can do that, especially if you get the sheet exactly centered in the press and above the book.

When you put a comic book in a cold press do you leave in a bag and board?

I typically dont leave a book in a bad and board during cold pressing, mostly so I get let gases escape.

I received today my 2 aluminum sheets I have a question when u press a book with one on top & one aluminum sheet on the bottom what temperature do you use on the pressing machine?

It depends on the book but usually 165F for me and I preheat the bottom board to that temperature first.

HI there. that depends on where you live and what shipping method you select. If you live one zone away from me here in Seattle and you select overnight shipping you would receive them about two days after your order. If you live in Antarctica on a military station and you select surface shipping it could take a month or so. I hope this helps! If you live in Kentucky and you select priority mail it would reach you in about 3-5 days. So without knowing more information I cannot really answer the question in a specific manner. I hope this helps.

DO you mean for the hot press? No not strictly but it saves time. You could just flip the book over and repress it, but most people prefer two boards so it is heated from both sides at once evenly. if you just have one board on one side, either bottom or top, the book tends to be either concave or convex when removed.

Love the video. But I hear you referring using a press brake to be able to cut the metal sheet, that is incorrect; a press brake bends metal sheets. The correct terminology is Shearing Machine to cut metal sheets. Great information, thanks!
