Really looking forward to this. I got to meet Jack Kirby several times, as manager of a comic book store in San Diego at the time I even bought him lunch during a San Diego Comic Con. We had already met a few times and he knew me by sight. I do remember clearly that he was very depressed one time. His Fourth World was a flop at the time. The only thing that was selling was Kamandi, which compared to everything else he was trying, was almost hack work by his standards! He really felt that he was being personally rejected by the fans. The only character that had any real popularity was actually Darkseid! Darkseid was one of the few beings out there actually capable of going toe to toe with Superman at the time. There was no Black Adam, Doomsday, or Mongul at the time. If you wanted someone who could actually slug it out with Superman you had to use Bizzaro or a Phantom Zone Criminal. All of Superman's other Rogues, Luthor, Brainiac, Mxptlik, Toy Man etc. had to be tricked because physically they could be beaten by a finger flick. Of course, eventually people did embrace the Fourth World, but that was long after. Anyway, that's a small personal story about Jack 'King' Kirby.
