this story arc was my favorite by far. You left out why Strange did what he did and that Grayson solved his riddle. The Monsters were a statement to Batman. Strange made them to represent Batman. The four people/monsters were chosen because they struggled with fear and anger. They struggled to define their egos and that struggle was what the toxins fed on to turn them into monsters. Grayson told Batman that they represented the Batmen and the struggle of Bruce from the beginning. It makes the whole story make so much sense. Gotham and Gotham girl became a terror to the city because of fear and anger. That anger was something that even overcame the Justice League. That anger had to be put down, which is what is supposed to happen to Batman, supposedly. Strange is giving us a different perspective of Batman and u don't necessarily see him as the villain here. I think the writers might be telling us something about Batman's struggle with fear and anger. But idk.

I used to collect comics back in the 80s and I read a comic book written before the dark knight returns where hugo Strange was trying to replace Batman, In the issue he even built an exact replica of wayne manor. Don't worry, I do not know much about comic books, but I do remember reading that very old issue, I got the issue while I was on vacation in Lake Tahoe and found the issue in a very old comic book bin.

@MrBoondaba7 жыл бұрын
When you talk about acknowledging human nature and its effect as a driving element - I remember a really cool conversation I had with my dad when I was 12 or 13. He said the episodes of Twilight Zone that got to him were the ones like the bomb shelter episode, where there wasn't anything supernatural going on, it was just a reminder about the nasty side of humanity. And it's BELIEVABLE, too, because at our core we are panicky beasts. Then we talked about how the best episodes weren't about the WEIRD THING that was going on, but almost entirely about the humans dealing with it. "There's a man on the wing of this plane" isn't about the gremlin, it's about not being believed - even being punished - because the truth that we want to share is too fantastic. And while we might never see a gremlin and react in a Shatneresque fashion, we've all been disbelieved when we were telling the truth and it's horrible. And my final $0.02: I've been a sci-fi fan since I was 10 and read Starship Troopers, and if there's one litmus test for a good story it's this: can you transplant the story to a different time? Superman's origin is basically Gulliver's Travels. Kingdom Come is basically the same story as Walking Tall. You could pick up Starship Troopers and plop it down in WWII and the story wouldn't suffer for it at all. I guess I'm bringing that up because comics are chock full of widgets - Clayface mimicking police and the like - but that particular widget is just a mechanism for introducing the "former malevolent character voluntarily suffers as pennance for his misdeeds and earns the respect of those to who he is repenting" story (seen everywhere from flagellant monks to Professor Snape.) You could turn the monsters into poison gas and Clayface into a former mobster, and as long as he refused to leave a block before everyone was evacuated - boom, same solid story, difference setting, litmus test passed. idk. Widget-centric "stories" bother me, in a very "Avatar sucked, but it made me want to watch Dances with Wolves again" way.

This story seemed more to be an homage to the 1940 Batman #1 Hugo Strange and the Mutant Monsters where Hugo Strange uses a serum on prisoners he escaped with to accelerate their growth to towering, giant, monsters. Batman attempts to stop him, only to be captured himself, injected with the same serum and has to create an antidote, stop the monsters, only to find that Hugo Strange has mysteriously vanished. A lot that happened in this mini story line echos from the original story in 1940, minus the part where Hugo wanted to take over the mantle of the Bat, believing Batman inadequate, which was again taken from another moment in Batman history in where the two fought each other in a replica of the Batcave, both in Batman uniforms, in 1983. The Monster Men was just fleshed out in part differently and as an homage for Rebirth.
@GreenGoblet228 жыл бұрын
This arc was decent and all, but I especially look forward to what DC's hinting at as far as Psycho Pirate's role in all this. If you read Grant Morrison's Animal Man (which you definitely should if you haven't), we know that the Pirate has gone mad by his awareness of the various crises and reboots that DC's undergone over the years. Although he hasn't had much influence in the continuity until lately, the Pirate's knowledge could definitely prove useful to Ozymandias/Dr. Manhattan if they plan to spark a new crisis in order to remake the universe in their image. I'm thinking that Bane is going to be the final link to the Watchmen mystery as he currently has the Pirate in his possession.

I think that one of the first appearances of Hugo Strange had him trying to become Batman. I may be wrong but I heard of a similar story happening in the 1940s or some time like that. If that's true, that's a nice callback

Regarding the statement at 24:40 there _was_ an earlier story where Hugo Strange tried to replace Batman. It was in Batman Vol 1 #356 (February, 1983) - dc.wikia.com/wiki/Batman_Vol_1_356. We see Hugo Strange suit up as the Batman. Later Bruce Wayne is gassed in his car and wakes up in what appears to be Wayne Manor with Robin and Alfred randomly attacking him. It turns out the mansion and cave under it are duplicates created by Hugo Strange and the Robin and Alfred were mandroids built for Strange's plan to replace Batman. The plan fails and the copy mansion blows up. In another issue images of what appears to Batman doing an inner monolog as he exercises. While at first it appears to fit you have this feeling of something being 'off' about it. Then there is the reveal that this in fact Hugo Strange. Researchwise there are three reasonable sources I use in looking up this stuff: comicvine, marvel wiki and dc wiki There are not perfect by and stretch of the imagination but wikipedia itself can provide some help in finding the issue that covers the material in question.

I'm a fairly new subscriber and I'm kinda surprised in the disinterest for the supernatural considering that a lot of characters in these universes are pretty much just that. And to be honest I'm also surprised that the biological origin of those monsters somehow manage to bypass their otherwise pretty supernatural appearances too. I dig the content though, just puzzled as to why supernatural stuff is placed aside.
