I'm a professional fine artist and back in the late '90s, in high school and university, I wrote and drew a little indie comic series. I like to think my work improved over those 5-6 years, mainly out of sheer repetition. Draw the same characters over and over and you refine your style very quickly. But unless you're pushing yourself to improve, being critical of possible shortcuts in your work that weaken your style, those shortcuts gradually become the norm, your baseline. It's an easy trap to fall into because of the repetition, and it requires constant monitoring to avoid.

I’ve been collecting comics since 1977, and drawing professionally since the late eighties. I have always loved that Rob Liefeld completely had his own style in an industry full of clones. I honestly feel bad for Rob Liefeld. Yes, in my opinion he is at fault for not developing his art to a more sophisticated level, but the amount of hate this guy gets just doesn't seem right. I, as well as others may find it difficult to grasp how he became famous for his comics, but the fact of the matter is, people out there do like his art, otherwise he would not be where he's at in life. This all just goes to demonstrate the subjectivity of art.
@Impybutt7 жыл бұрын
I think most of the ire Rob Liefeld gets for his art has to to with the fact that he earns millions of dollars for being sup-par, and has actively influenced a lot of young artists who regarded his work as something to aspire to.

The analogous to Liefeld is Limp Bizkit and Adam Sandler. Completely juvenile in its art but kids think it's cool especially when you don't see the stupidity. I worked at a Limp Bizkit concert and the most people you saw was 10-14 year olds. Limp Bizkit is essentially below average rap on top of below average metal guitars, but you see Fred Durst backwards hat and talking about nookie and kids eat it up. Same thing with Adam Sandler movies, shit quality, but kids fucking love it for some reason.

I subscribed for two reasons, reason one, you seem like a good and decent human being, and reason two, you didn't jump on the anti Rob Liefield bandwagon, it gets tiresome hearing people constantly bitching about the guy, personally I enjoy his art, I am aware it's not the best artwork, but I grew up reading comics in the early 90's, so the likes of Liefield, MacFarlane, Jim Lee, etc will always have a special place in my heart. When I was a young child around the age of 7 I always tried to emulate Liefield's work, I was one of them heavy metal, extreme, idiotic kids, so that style of artwork just appealed to me. Obviously now that I'm a grown man, my tastes have changed and evolved, but without the likes of Liefield I would have never been as passionate about comic books as I am today.
@ComicTropes7 жыл бұрын
Yes! That's exactly how I feel. When I was a teenager I loved this stuff and ate it up. So I'm never going to hate it. My tastes have evolved and I will critique comics but that's because otherwise there's nothing to say. No hate for any of the Image guys and I still admire several of them quite a bit.
@TheLoboFairchild7 жыл бұрын
I actually managed to get the entire first volume of Youngblood recently, and sure it's not the best comic, but I enjoyed it for what it was, to me Youngblood is the comic equivalent of a B movie, you know the movie is bad, but you enjoy it because of how bad it is. I'm now trying to hunt down the rest of Liefield's back log, I got the first issue of Bloodstrike too, just because it was the 'Rub the Blood' issue. I think the problem with Liefield when it comes to certain comic fans is, they want to look like they have a superior taste to everyone else, but at the end of the day comics are made with the intention of entertaining people, and like life itself, they should not be taken too seriously. Have you ever read any Chaos! Comics, like Evil Ernie or Lady Death? You could actually do a trope video for Brian Pullido's works. I remember discovering Evil Ernie, it was the first horror comic to give me chills.

I just want to add I was probably 15 or so when he was on New Mutants and X Force and he did a small comic con in San Mateo just south of San Francisco and he was so generous with his time and patient with what was basically an over excited hyper kid. I will never hate on him for his ability to not only laugh at himself but just to share in a kids love of comics. Yeah, I definitely grew out of the style but I still hold him on very high regards. I kind of wish guys like you lived around me so I had people to enjoy the bad old days of the 90s with at times.
