Because in the US the mother getting the kids is a given with the exception of you are able to prove they are unfit or the states that allow kids to choose, and even then it's more likely joint custody of the kids even if they choose the father. Even in the case of joint custody the wife will likely get primary which will enable her to dictate how much time the father gets regardless of the court's decision.

Theyd see an example of seeing married couple being not lovey dovey and think its okay, unless they know the truth. The best one is from WW POV. WW told BH to have Oepn marriage.
