I was 'pushed' the EV route as I am a company car driver and the BIK tax was pretty much zero. And I have to say, I really like it. 5 years, 70,000 miles, 650 mile round trips to Cornwall on holiday, never once had an issue. Did a 320 mile round trip all motorway in February without needing to stop and charge. 400 BHP, instant acceleration, 4WD. Quite good fun too. Should we force everyone to get an EV? Nope. Will EV's cure "climate change"? Nope. Are EV's for everyone? Nope. Do I genuinely prefer driving an EV everyday as opposed to a petrol? Yep! And I am a National Sales Manager, travel is a necessity for my job.

It should always be a choice what car people want to drive, not that of a woke politician. I will always stick with diesel and petrol, I have a large 4x4 with a 67 litre tank, which i get 615 miles of range from a very efficient Euro 6 diesel engine. But my wife and i have horses and a few breeding sheep, so towing a 2/3 ton load is easy and I must say with little impact on range, especially on main roads. We also live in Cumbria so very hilly and remote and its fairly cold up here, a lot of the time 😁.

Yes - I'm insane to be driving at 2p per mile using an overnight EV electric tariff. I should be like you and happy to pay at least 15p per mile at a minimum buying petrol/diesel. My car has a range of 285 miles. When and if I drive beyond that on a trip I have to resort to buying public electric which costs the same per mile as your petrol car. Oh dear. You are right. There is no doubt that EVs have a place in the transport infrastructure There are many many people out there that do low daily/weekly mileage who could benefit from them There are people who live in the suburbs and countryside that have off road parking and could easily accommodate a chargepoint We could easily get to 30% of cars being EV if it was targeted and incentivised to those who would benefit or easily make the transition It is the nut/sledgehammer approach that is causing the issues in the main
@Tom-dt4ic
@Tom-dt4ic 2 күн бұрын
@@patrickfarrell4751 I can't speak for other EV's, but believe me, I find my Model Y far and away better for both in town and long distance travel. It seems like a bit of a left handed insult to say that EV's are good for driving around town, when most are brilliant for short AND long distance travel. I have 320 miles of range, so I can go about 280 miles without stopping and still have a decent margin for safety. And for me 280 miles takes over four hours, and that's quite enough before needing a twenty minute break. Perhaps other EV's, especially non-Tesla EV's, with less range might be a little harder to road trip. But not much. And that's getting better all the time as battery technology advances. And the Tesla charging network is now open to more and more non-Tesla cars as well. EV’s just have too many advantages over ICE cars for all but the most extreme use cases.

The market should decide. No need for governments to intervene in markets like this. The EVs are either bought by customers on their own merits or they are not. The government needs to be ready to legislate for cars that drive themselves which will result in fewer people wanting to own a car when they can get a taxi at 50% or less of current price.

Vauxhall electric vans are useless, they have a range of 70 miles but if you put a ladder on top it falls, if you put the heater on in cold weather you are warned that you have cut drastically your range - they are commercially unviable, hopeless I cannot afford to waste half the day charging these vans I;m staying with diesel. We don't need electric car targets, we want a rethink. Think about this, EVs are driven by rotating machines powered by electricity. Electricity is produced by rotating machines which produce electricity. (solar excluded) Logically the more EVs there are the more and bigger the need for rotating machines to produce the electricity. Not only that, but there is a need for bigger and more wires to connect the machines and the batteries required to store the electricity. You don't get anything for free, especially electricity. There are over 40 million cars in the UK these days. What size or how many rotating machines (electrical generators) are required to drive all the cars on the roads or charge up all the car batteries every day? That is an interesting question don’t you think?...... EVs are just leeching off the Electrical Grid. If they substantially increase in number the Grid will be overloaded soon.

Another non EV owner thinking logically but reaching a wrong or irrelevant conclusion. Switch anything on in an EV and its draining the battery - now whilst that's true the capacity of the battery is so large that the drain is almost irrelevant - It would be like stating that a fuel tanks evaporation when standing will reduce the range, or starting an ICE when cold consumes a lot more fuel until warmed up and therefore reduced range - It does indeed do this but its so small to not be an issue. All electrical systems on an EV (apart from the heater) is a miniscule amount of watts. The headlights are around 20watts each, tail and brake lights, indicator etc 5 watts each, the computer and screen around 200 watts. Just look at facts - 300 miles with something like the Model 3 - in the cold and with lights and heater on its probably going to reduce to 270 miles - but, exactly the same thing happens with ICE - run in the cold, heater and lights on then the alternator has to generate lots of power - to do that it makes turning the drive pully a lot harder - so the engine has a lot more drag and uses more fuel and a percentage of the available power to generate that electrical energy - but no one ever notices. With EVs the media and many owners worry carrying their sandwiches affects the range - its all rather stupid. Chargers are absolutely everywhere its just they aren't quite so prominent as a filling station, but all supermarkets, McDonalds, Motorway services etc all have them, plus Tesla have dedicated superchargers - and the cars direct you to one if your running low on charge. Now fatties - like yourself - you always manage to find food - well where there is food there is a charger very close by. Your talking out of your backside, why not try one, as an experiment, then return after three months and tell us all how crap they are - guaranteed you will love an EV and find the rhetoric is comply untrue.

The problem is not with individual usage cases. I'm EV's suit some people very well. The major misinformation is the pure fiction that EV usage can or should be scaled up to incorporate 80% of new vehicles in the next 5 years.

Thats cause EVs dont work they dont do what the maker say they do they have no range and charging cost more than diesel that if you can find a charging piont that works plus you have to pay to park the car so you can then charge it , the life or the batteries is only around 7years if you to replace the batteries itll cost between £10.000 to £20.000 most people dont charge at home because they live in flats or terraced homes and theres no on street charging plus the energy companies would just rip you off like they doing now so electric car just a load of BS and they are not green thats BS too the only way you can get anywhere near green is through hydogen powered which you can generate by producing hydro generation coupled with solar and wind generation

Most EVs charge overnight when the power supply is not a problem because all the daytime use slows down. In fact the grid has a problem with that over supply and has always had to try to get rid of it by offering tariffs like 'economy 7' for the old storage heaters. Now they offer cheap EV charge tariffs simply because they have a glut overnight. We have the same ability to power the grid 24/7 but at present that peak is only really needed during the day. They would love to be able to use that peak day and night as it would avoid having to close down some generators at midnight and then start again at 6am.

not everyone in this country has a nice little cosy little garage or driveway to take advantage of cheap tariff electricity but hey lets ignore that and carry on regardless
@Hitstirrer
@Hitstirrer 3 күн бұрын
@@oldshiny3012 No - it's about a 70/30 split. With/without drives. Not ignored. Acknowledged. And if people always charge in public the cost is almost identical per mile to buying liquid fuel. Not ideal. But an EV driver will be driving a better car without any pollution at the tailpipe.

@@oldshiny3012 Perhaps in ten years' time when the EV fleet is much larger. But that's no reason to not take advantage of 2p per mile right now. Of course, you can carry on buying petrol at 15p per mile plus if you want. Your choice.

You're speaking purely from a current day position. The Government targets one and a half million new EV's sold per year, every year by 2030. With each requiring between 7KW and 22KW charging. Most households don't use that amount of electricity in an entire day at present. Do you genuinely think we'll have the generating capacity or grid infrastructure by then to cope with that level of increase in demand (even without the net zero push)? I think your off-peak headroom will go away in fairly short order.

The reason TELSA is the best selling are in the world is because Elon makes better and safer cars the petrol cars. But I don’t think people should be made to buy an electric car, legacy car manufacturers don’t want to make electric cars and never have. Because they can’t make them cheap enough to compete with TELSA. So they’re stuck if with factory’s that would need to completely retool and the costs to compete will destroy them. So we get all the propaganda that electric cars are no good and they cost to much. 🤷🏻‍♂️ but just like the majority of people don’t do any fact checking, there happy to just keep pushing the same old narrative.🤷🏻‍♂️ Do better Talk Tv

I’ll keep driving my diesel for the next two to three years then buy a Tesla CyberCab which will drive itself and when I don’t need to use it I’ll add it to the RoboTaxi fleet to earn money and I’ll need multiple income streams as this lot in charge will most likely means test the SP and I won’t be able to retire if I don’t have alternative sources of income.
