The Merchant Marine lost more men in relation to the numbers of there service than any other branch and were not recognized by the Veterans Administration until the late 80’s.There were no women serving in the US Merchant Marine during WW II, God Bless all that served.

This is bs. They never used to fend mines away from big sjps like that. Those types of mines are anchored by a weighted chain or wire rope, as soon as you push it away it will simply float back to where it was, so by the time the ship has started to pass the mine will already be coming back and will contact the vessel. Usual method was to use small arms or similar to detonate them. I also don't believe you'd find a sailor who can't tie a knot properly! 😂

They had hundreds of Enfield rifles, thousands of ammo and a couple of Bofors AA guns in the cargo hold. Plinking those mines would have been the better way. The ship's captain should have ordered to ship to go back early in the movie. He knew the ship's engine was badly needing repair and he still insisted that the cargo delivered to USSR, which by the way was Nazi Germany's bestfriend a few months ago. After the war, USSR belittled the Allies' tremendous material aid to the USSR.

Hmmmmm…..😒…mines DON’T just randomly float around. They are tethered to ocean floor, otherwise mine ‘fields’ would ALSO be a danger to the side laying the mines. So pushing one away would be useless. USUALLY when a mine was spotted the ship stopped and everyone would shoot at them with rifles or whatever armament the ship had, until it blew up. The ‘horns’ on the mind have to be broken to ignite the mine. I have a friend who, during the Iraq war, was in the USN was one of those nuts that would swim out to the mine, place a small charge in it and explode it that way. He has a picture of himself in the water holding onto a ‘horn’ on a mine before he blew it up. His master chief went ballistic when he saw the photo….because the guy who took the photo was also in danger cuz he was in the water next to him. Unkind things were said to both swimmers……😔😅

Tying knots is one of the basic skills for seamen. He couldn't even tie the knot properly, and it came undone.

I realize that this is dramatizing the events of the Murmansk convoys, which were the only thing that kept Russia sufficiently supplied to stay in the fight, but even a ‘pit snipe’ - what you call the guys in the engine room, which is what I did for six years - can tie a more effective knot than that, which I would have presumed a deck hand, someone accustomed to tying knots, would have done. I don’t know diddly about mines, but I always thought they were tethered to weights on the seabed, otherwise the currents would disperse them? Am I wrong? Anyway, hope to see the movie, and my respects to the sailors who did those convoys, of which more than 10% perished in those freezing, terrible waters.
