The market was much smaller, but you should compare what is comparable. Many studios of the time created terrible games that got lost to time. Modern Indie studios still create masterpieces. I'm 40, young by some gamers standards, very old by others. I'm old enough to remember "old players" saying that the eighties were the golden years of computer games. In a decade or so, people will say that the 2010s were the golden years of computer games. That's because nobody gets to have fifty years of teenage gaming years: you only get very few games that set your standard of what a great game is. Worms, Red Alert, V:tMB, Deus Ex (1, and 3, not 2...), System Shock, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Civilization, Sim City, NFS (The Need For Speed), Starcraft, Doom, Starcraft 2, World of Warcraft... The truth is you can go on for ages. Everyone has their favorites, but there are dozens if not hundreds of fantastic, era-defining games, and it will keep growing. Maybe next revolution is AI-assisted games.

Frank had to go back in time and remaster the tracks and in a few cases he had to remake the track from scratch. Obviously great music but the originals were super low quality compared to his remastering.

This was an absolute masterpiece of gaming music back in the day. The way Klepacki nailed the hard steel-like sound and combined it with nearly dance music is beyond me. Also, even though the soundtrack can be dominating at times it blends perfectly with the gameplay. You don't notice the stich moments, the transitions are very well hidden. Plus with this soundtrack in the background any task feels like a campaign against Stalin. Even doing laundry :D

I like the difference between the Soviet tracks and the Allies ones, both track sets represent their faction pretty well 😀. The latter had more varied tracks, some of them about the assumed reality and dramaticality of war (like Mud, Face the Enemy, Run...) while the former had less tracks, focused on action or brute strength, kind of giving a propaganda feel 🙂.

You know C&C wouldn't have been possible to begin with if it wasn't for publishers giving the money to the developers to make videogames, right? Sure, EA made a terrible mistake with C&C4 and it was sad when they cancelled Generals 2 just to put more money mobile garbage, but hey, it's not like any franchise hasn't had a pariah, and thanks to EA's cash we got Tiberian Sun, Firestorm, Red Alert 2, Yuri's Revenge, Renegade, Generals, Zero Hour, Tiberium Wars, Kane's Wrath, Red Alert 3 and Uprising as well as mod SDKs, now go tell in any gaming forum any of those games were bad and you will have a sure-fire flamewar.

I am aware, yes. Are you aware of the fact that Westwood Studios had a reputation for releasing complete games on time until it was bought by EA? Within 5 years, all of the original employees quit. EA has a reputation for releasing rushed, buggy, incomplete games and burning out programmers with ridiculous schedules and demands. I loved Generals. I loved Zero Hour even more, but multiplayer was completely unplayable because the BS copy protection always thought my legitimate keys were counterfeit. My friends had the same problem even though they purchased multiple copies of the game hoping to fix it. I don't even feel like trying to recall our issues with EA beyond that. To me, EA ruined the franchise. Not because those games weren't decent, but because Westwood Studios would have never let an inferior product hit the shelves.

PupuTheMonkey 100% cnc ra was awesome. generals was great but buggy. lotta trouble playin lan with friends. then in middle of game (after fighting to get them working) it would crash dropping at least 1player. fun but a buggy hassle.

Used to have to play this game with the sound down very low so my parents didn't hear it while they were watching tv. Got my own house now and it feels great to be able to turn the volume up so Hell March shakes the house. Amazing soundtrackThis was the 1st game i played over the internet (dial up direct connection to a friend who also had the game) Had to take my pc downstairs and sit at the bottom of the stairs so it could reach the phone socket as it would lag on an extention

Xehemoth That was the one of the most good parts of old gaming. No super balance, or shiny cleaned mechanics. Games today seem too "clean" and that's one of the reasons that they are somewhat boring. Just bring three MAD tanks, and bring down the whole base in seconds, that's what I call fun.

I remember when I first played Commander & Conquer: Tiberium Dawn. I was a little kid at the time, and my cousin told me about a game where you get to control soldiers and send them around. At first, I figured, big deal *sarcasm.* However, when I first witnessed this great masterpiece in action, I was absolutely blown away. I still remember the first GDI mission on the beach, and I keep hearing "reinforcements have arrived;" I subsequently maticulously control my army… FEELING LIKE GOD!!! …suffice it to say, this game virtually and unequivocally CONQUERED my childhood.

I actually cant beat the campaign. It's really hard! I am playing as Allies right now, and i am at the mission with the soviet atomic bombs. Apparently, i am playing the "worst-case-scenario" mission, where the soviets already launched the missiles, and you have to stop them by getting engineers to the control panels. Everything have been going smooth until now. I cant beat the damn mission! Someone help me? Advice, anything! I really want to finish the campaign :(

MrMartDrummer The time limit you get in that worst case mission is the same limit that you're left with at the end of the previous mission. When I went through, I only managed to give myself 5 minutes, and I think it takes at least 15. I had to play through all the previous missions again, because I didn't have a save on the previous mission. >.< So if time is your issue, you might try that. I can't remember much about beating the mission itself, though, aside from making sure to leave a guard stationary behind my guys so they could auto-kill the dogs that constantly attack.
