I quite liked RA3 at the time, its only real downside was it felt like a somewhat rushed game. Combined with the dizzy heights RA2 hit, you could only go downwards with a sequel to that anyway, probably compounded that feeling further with some of those that played it. I still fire up the single player campaign every once in a while, it’s worth it for the Tim Curry cutscenes alone! :D (Along with the mostly boss OST.)

@Marrick Curia what I mean is that your income is so slow even with like 8 mines that you constantly need to safe up cash to build stuff. While in generals they had a income system where you could build armies and have multiple types of income. In red 2 you could horde more with the ore fields. In tiberiums the same as red 2. While red's 3 system causes delays/pauzes in combat. Wich is kinda a mood killer.

Couldn't disagree more about the music. C&C3 music was mostly background movie score, Red Alert 3 has some of the most outstanding music in any RTS period. The way it shifts depending on what's happening during the game is nothing short of amazing (the Soviet choir getting more dramatic in late game is my personal favorite). Every time you play skirmish/multiplayer, there's a separate track that plays before any blows are traded at all, which is a minor touch, but helps in pulling you into the game that much more. Red Rock for Mother Russia, Bring it!, Mecha Storm, just look the OST up, it's kickass as all hell. By the way, people who are nostalgic towards Generals haven't replayed that game since it came out. It did *not* age as well as you probably think.

@anonvideo7384 жыл бұрын
I think the change in ore collection was a necessary one. The old system allowed you to just gorge yourself on tiberium/ore and then spam out tanks to try and rush someone down. I remember the early days of C&C3 when it was just spam harvesters into scorpion spam. Or how RA2 is grizzly spam. They had the limited harvest speed with generals (the supply pad could only serve 1 harvester at a time) and that helped a lot. And seeing how many other RTS have some kind of resource income throttling I think they just went back to generals to solve the problem. I personally really loved the expansion's challenge mode. Its not that much like generals, because you slowly unlock the unit pool of each faction. And you can always switch, this means that for each challenge map you can chose who is best suited for the map, and beat the par time. And if you cant beat a map quickly, do some others and then come back when your unit roster is bigger. And the maps are usually built around a theme or unit, this almost makes them feel like puzzles (like starting against 6 enemies all with a superweapon charging up, and you get your commando right at the start, so you can try and use her to destroy as many superweapons as possible before they are ready). Its a shame the main campaign of the expansion was obviously rushed (with only the russians getting a fair amount of content), probably because of the 2008 crisis made EA rush it. I like the coop campaign idea, but i wish there was an option for just solo play without the AI.

When it comes to competitive gaming, RA3 imo definitely wins. All the factions are balanced and can be played in various ways. Not long before the release of Red Alert 3, I went back into Red Alert 2 via The First Decade collection, and paid ever so much attention to its pre-release articles and materials. It was probably my most hyped up game that I can think of. I played Red Alert 2 when I was very young, and the first Red Alert when I was even younger. Red Alert 2 blew the first Red Alert out of the water in practically every way (the Allies' ground units are no longer crap, the Soviets' naval units are no longer crap, there's no need to worry about ore silos, building designs were far more distinct, and there were production queues), so it was easily my favorite of the Westwood-made C&C games. When Red Alert 3 came out, it wasn't as mind blowing as its predecessor as my standards had grown by then, it it's definitely the most balanced and user-friendly in the franchise (I was glad the grid-based base-building system came back; building things in C&C 3 was a bitch. And I really did not miss the resource fields and actually thought the ore node/mine concept was for the better). The co-op compatibility with the campaigns was a really nice touch. All in all, Red Alert 3 is easily my nominee for the best EA-LA developed C&C game by a mile.

RA3 overstepped in the multy purpose units big time, while strangely, it took out Apo tanks from the multy purpose units and gave japaneese a hyper strong multy purpose unit (no air attack for apo), jetpack unit given to japan and being strongly buffed to the point, that you can simply spam it and even if the enemy composition is built to counter them, they might still lose due to their sheer mobility and damage output... Unit movement is another huge downgrade, some large units can be stacked super close, some graphically smaller units, like stingray, can barely be used in groups, since for some reason, they keep so large distance from each other, that it makes them less usefull as a unit in all situations. The resource gathering is a piece of crap obviously.
@Benekon2 жыл бұрын
The resource gathering was created to create a more competetive game, EA or the dev team, idk exactly who had the ideas, wanted to make a big RTS competetive contender instead of creating a casual and more fun experience. I for one love the economy system of RA3 as it gives more spectator value than red alert 2 or 1. But in the end it was the wrong choice, people loved the previous resource gathering, so why change it?

I really enjoyed the balance composition in Red Alert 3. Every unit felt special, and the game overall avoided Generals' awful single unit spam meta (which is not a fault of the game, but rather lack of balance updates). And even compared to Red Alert 2, where a lot of units felt too situational to be useful, or only filled niche roles (looking at siege copter). Red Alert 3 felt rewarding, when you were able to utilize units and their abilities to their maximum. Tiberium Wars and Red Alert 3 were released at poor timing, where people weren't looking to play RTS'. And I'm afraid people just generally cater to MOBA and shooter games these days, which is a shame, because I often replay CnC campaigns occasionally, fully enjoying them. Perhaps nostalgia is a strong drug.
@greatoztv42004 жыл бұрын
The purpose of the Node-based resource collection system is to make managing economy easier and more straightforward for competitive play, which it actually does a good job at. The problem is that, at least at the time, most of the player base is not into competitive (cough Starcraft cough) RTS games, so it turned off much of the fan base. As far as competitive play goes, the unit counter system and balance is pretty good for the most part, minus Allies being a bit strong lol. Personally, I don't like it as much as the others in the C&C franchise because I find the economy too restrictive in practice. As an easy example of my point: not even 3 refineries ($250 * 3 per 10 second cycle) will let an Empire player produce Tengus ($800 per 10 second build time) from a single Mecha Bay continuously. In my opinion, game is still solid and fantastic in its own right, but it's just not for me personally. I can understand the appeal of it for people who do really enjoy it.
@ChenAnPin4 жыл бұрын
Gotta give EALA some credit for trying something different with the resource gathering system. In Red Alert 2, the Miners of every faction was unique with their own upsides and downsides: the Allied Chrono Miner could teleport back to the ore refinery, which makes it great at reaching farther ore fields while evading danger but carried less ore. The Soviet War Miner was a bit tougher and could also fight back with an MG, and carries the most ore on a single run. And the Yuri Slave Miner was a mobile ore refinery and could eat through an ore field quite quickly, though the downside is their miners are fragile. In Red Alert 3, even though they streamlined the way all three factions harvest ore at the same amount and pace, they still managed to make each faction's Ore Miner unique, with the Soviet miner able to deploy a hardened shell to survive more hits, the Empire miner able to switch to a rapid-firing anti-infantry gun, and the Allied miner able to turn into a base expansion.
@1InVader14 жыл бұрын
Totally agree on the restrictive economy. One of the few things I enjoyed in SC2 was that having multiple unit factories (2 or sometimes even 3) was desirable choice to make, whereas in RA3 there's no way you can realistically supply more than 1 unit factory with enough money (especially next to building and whatnot). That's the case in most C&C games though.
@greatoztv42004 жыл бұрын
For me personally, I would say that Kane's Wrath (KW) is my favorite C&C for PVP. It has a similar unit counter system as RA3 without the overly restrictive economy, but the factions are not quite as balanced. Building 2 to 3 war factories is even recommended in KW once the economy is under control. As long as your early-game scouting is good, you can counter pretty-much any kind of rush in that game and its fairly easy; countering the rush also usually puts you ahead eco-wise too. Whereas in RA3, early game scouting can be extremely tricky due to it's micro-focused nature; you have to balance winning the micro/scout war and setting up your macro (eco) at the same time, too much clicking for me lol. KW is a more macro-focused game, but RA3 is more micro-focused.

I bound the Home key (camera to base) to one of my mouse buttons and now I have no problem switching between microing scouts and building the base (though I really should get used to the camera bookmark feature). Every unit only having 1 special ability bound to F also helps. In C&C3 I always had trouble remembering which ability is which key combination. The biggest drawback in all C&C games is the mouse controls. You can't drag and issue move/attack commands at the same time, because that creates a selection box (or drags the screen), lmao. Even funnier, that happens with the modern control scheme too, so there's virtually no advantage over legacy mouse controls, lol. The Blizzard/DotA2 mouse control standard is way better.

So you're not gonna mention how the game's soundtrack dynamically changes based on how much combat heat you're packing/putting up with? There's music for your first contact with the enemy at early game. There's music for after the fight & conflict calms down. There's music for when you build up an massive army and stomp your foes or when get stomped by your enemy. - To anyone who hasn't played this yet, the guitar scores that play in high heat combat is amazing. As you can see. Red Alert 3's soundtrack is VERY dynamic.

+Zade I really do not know what you are thinking however the fixed resourcing nodes are there to enable and allow reliable resource gathering from controlled areas of the map: so rather then having clumsy area based resourcing operations where in unless the player is willing to dedicate a significant portion of there army to defend them resource collectors can be easily picked off; it gives the player the opportunity to properly defend them and not constantly worry about them (even when the player is trying to defend them...) and thus frees the player to focus on other things and along with encouraging the player to actually use the map in taking and holding territory is quite liberating in what it then allows the player to focus on and do. I detect a bit of nostalgic bias here so I will just say: is red alert 3 better ought?..well because both games have a good variety of units and unique factions; no. However because of the fact that red alert 3 is 3D and thus has an actual terrain element, and because certain game mechanics are more fleshed out e.g. special weapons having their own place in the U.I. rather then on the taskbar: is red alert 3 better in certain ways?..yes.

Im a long time fan of C&C franchise (played it since TibDawn) and despite it Red Alert 3 is probbably my favourite. Static Ore mines are definitly adding more skill to it, all units are unique, and naval combat is definitly awesome. But it is really worth to mention that despite vanilla campaign is insane and really reminds RA2 (espiecally soviet campaign, just put Krukov as Vladimir and Cherdenko as Yuri) Uprising got an awesome story potential. And hey! Yuriko is Yuri's daughter so our master somehow reappears in RA3!

It's funny how red alert became sillier and campier with each game while tiberium 3 was more serious than 2 (still B-movie-like, but less so). I heard rumours on a supposed 4th entry, but I'll never know if the series kept that trend. JK Simmons and Tim Curry are the best thing to happen to the C&C campaigns, save for Joe Kucan of course.

Game speed is tied to 30 fps, with 60 fps the game speed would have been faster. Ore mining is rather good in my eyes, 1 you don't have to constantly micro the collectors for optimal speed, 2 getting another refinery is a 50% increase income (if it's your third one ) (your second one is a 100% increase of income) 3 Due to the lack of cash the units you have and make are way more important than just the classic unit spam. Uprising units are nice and all but a way to broken for the gameplay, I am glad it's not in the online mode. 30 fps btw does not botter me I DO not care about graphics or fps at all :) Red alert 3 veteran Edvin (12 years and still playing ;) )

with a 30fps handicap this game never had a chance in esports. I think the dev team either never considered it or just went along hoping that players can get used to it. The product is a more competitive game in the series that never even had a slight chance of being a serious esport game. All because of the 30fps limitation which could be fine for fans of the titles, but atrocious for anyone else in an age where literally every other major titles support 60+ fps

My main problem is that the game encourages short battles. The longer a battle drags on the less credits you can pull in. Combined with the facts that oil wells seem underpowered and ore mines don't regenerate, you have to strike fast if you don't want to get bogged down.

I respect the decision made in the video that Ra2 is “a better game” but i have to say the only reason im seeing for why it’s better is because it was a revolutionary game, not because it was more fun or had obviously more effort put into it. I grew up with both and i have to say that they are both great and whether one is better than the other cant be said because the time gap is too big and definitely the budget as well Had to edit after reading comments: i honestly just sense a lot of bias towards Ra2 and i personally don’t see how one is any more fun than the other, if you like things simpler than that’s fair but cmon games have changed and require some thought, RA3 captures that in ways

[10:20] There's a CnC youtubet named XYHC that made an analysis video regarding the changes with the ore collecting. You can check it out for yourself here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIK7YomFpKeneqM But if I were to summarise it, the "get your instant money" mechanic is for competitive purposes and so that players can jump straight into battle with their infantry or whatever instead of staying at their base and tell their collectors on what to do.

Personally I think the SHEER strategical, tactical and positional DEPTH, of this game is IMMENSE. This is a strategy game based on rushing and sheer pressure. Exactly like Chess. This game plays and feels like chess to those who know how chess is played. You want to win all those little battles, this is the key and the game works perfectly by having every unit be able to do multiple things via special abilities that they all have (each their own) and when you combine all those special abilities - THAT is where the game really shines. I have been playing RTS games for decades. This is one of the greatest and MOST underrated strategy game of all time. People that hate it haven't really invested the time that this game needs. When you watch elite players play this game in championships - you will understand how this game should be considered one of the best. You NEVER know who is going to win untill the very last moments. This is what makes games good.

The reason why RA2 was so beloved is how much better it was than other games at the time. That's the only way RA3 is inferior - it doesn't leap forward in the same way relative to other games of its era. In every other respect, RA3 is far superior.

Soviet soundtrack(s) is amazing. The game itself is fairly good. I mean it's not RA2, but it's better than the Tiberium genre. Still, C&C: Generals remains my favourite C&C game.
@Erikcleric3 жыл бұрын
To be fair. Generals is just C&C in name, it's not C&C in any way. It's a successful EA cash grab. I don't understand how people miss that. I mean it's dealing in present day issues then and now, terrorism .. in character it's actually a generic war game, very generic. Incredibly serious but dull... Story. But it's FUN so it isn't bad. But it was EA using the c&c name after they shut down Westwood. I played it tons but i was disappointed in basically re-enacting the War in Afghanistan i got truly happy (and surprised)when C&C 3 came. CC 3 was what i thought Generals was, 3D command & conquer. I always wished EA could've called it "Generals" or "War Generals" when literally has no connection to the c&c series.

I genuinely like Red Alert 3. One of my main gripes is actually in the campaign. I know that there are a ton of naval units, but I'm not fond of every campaign map needing a body of water, as well as a naval fleet. It just feels weird being able to sail right into the mainland of Japan with Carriers and Dreadnoughts. Japan's invasion of the US was equally underwhelming, since we seem to be mainly attacking the coasts. Again, I know there are a lot of naval units and they are the Empire's forte, but it would have been a good challenge to US's aerial superiority, and Russia's land power.

I think that one of the things Red Alert 3 did EXCEPTIONALLY at that most people sleep on is Naval Combat. Naval Combat in most RTS games is usually considered either a Meme or a forbidden term, and generally considered one of the things that is next to impossible to do well, but also can't leave out of the game. RA3 actually managed a really good Naval Combat system, that was in some ways BETTER than the land combat. Something that most RTS gamers would in all other instances claim as a impossibility.
