I didn't know of this Vietnamese Navy Officer, but I saw the video about the Vietnamese U.S. Navy ship commander. I believe it's a frigate or a destroyer. He was the first Commander of any U.S. Ship to enter the port of Da-Nang, sense the end of America's involvement in the Vietnam War. His father was a Navy officer in the Republic of South Vietnam. There was a big celebration with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Navy officers, and his family who he met for the first time. There were also strong warnings from China.

He is not a ship commander but a ship captain (hạm trưởng) His rank is commander (trung tá Hải Quân). A ship captain could be a lieutenant junior grade (trung úy) of a patrol boat, or a commander (trung tá) of a big ship (destroyer), or a captain (đại tá) of a WHEC, or a commodore (phó đề đốc) of a aircraft carrier,...

I watched this one and learned something new, but there is also a woman Vietnamese aviator of a F -18, Hornet in the Marines, and a U.S. Navy ship commander who was also a Vietnamese refugee after 1975.He was the commanding officer of a frigate or a destroyer which recently pulled into Da-Nang, with strong warnings from China.

Ernest Dauterive I read your comment + question so I take the liberty of responding. The captain of the destroyer, USS Lassen, that visited Vietnam several years ago was then Commander Le(L) Ba(M) Hung(F). Le Ba Hung evidently was promoted to Captain (equivalent to full colonel of the Army) in the intervening years. Early April of this year - 2015, Le Ba Hung lead a two ships visited Da nang - Vietnam again: one destroyer - not the Lassen, and one Littoral Combat Ship "LCS"; his father was a well-known South Vietnam Navy Commander (Le Ba Thong). The woman aviator of the US Marines F - 18 was Ms. Elizabeth Pham. Hope that my post answers your questions. Cheers

Có nhiều người lầm lẫn! In Navy, commander không có nghĩa là chỉ huy trưởng hay tư l65ng gì cả mà chỉ có 1 nghĩa duy nhất là trung tá. Đọan news trên đây không cho biết Cmdr Hung Cao đã lên đề đốc (commodore, 1 sao) hay chưa.
