Windgrace is an incredibly powerful Commander in a very deceptive way. Like, I don't think they playtested that minus ability with fetch lands in mind.
@CommanderReplay2 жыл бұрын
Yeah probably not. Or like even in the shell of a lands deck which was a known quantity at the time. Pretty annoying. I was also thinking if it only got 1 back, its probably not nearly the problem it is now.

I hardly ever use that ultimate ability on Windgrace. It usually takes too many hits by then but if you're in a pinch it is good removal. I run Kodama of the East Tree + Bounce Land + any Landfall token payoff to combo win. The back up is Ashaya + Quirion Ranger + any Landfall token payoff. Such a fun deck!

Ahhhh yeah! I've been wanting you to play this deck for a long time!

Yeah that is definitely a factor, but I still attribute a lot of it to the difference between mana and card draw.

Wow, that was nutz! Also, I really miss the old deck breakdowns. Please either bring those back or make sure that we have a decklist!~ Thanks
@CommanderReplay2 жыл бұрын
Sadly no one was watching when I would do the long breakdowns at the end, and it was hurting my average % viewed metric so I shortened them up and its helped a bit. I can make sure to add the decklist though, usually i just get lazy after 5-6 hours of editing and forget to do that part.

I own a Lord Windgrace.. but Streets of New Capenna just came out with many great Jund commanders. my personal favorite is Mr. Orfeo: Mr. Orfeo, the Boulder {1}{B}{R}{G} Legendary Creature - Rhino Warrior, that says: Whenever you attack, double target creature’s power until end of turn. so if you have say, Fiendish Duo in play and a 5/5 flyer + Xenagos and your commander, that 5/5 flyer with 1 shot an opponent. it will attack, your commander doubles it power then Xenagos doubles it again and Fiendish duo makes it deal double the damage, so 5/5 becomes 10/10 that becomes 20/20 that deals 40 damage. if you then have fling in your hand, you can fling the 20/20 at your next opponent and deal 40 to them too. you can even play the 5/5 flyer, Xenagos will give it haste, trample and double it's power

I have fond memories of my old Windgrace deck. I've since turned it into a Titania lands deck as I found the 3 colors to have access to too much value. I like the restrictions that going mono-color puts on a lands focused deck. I definitely think you hit the nail on the head for combating land decks. Graveyard hate is key as most land decks heavily utilize the graveyard. Targeted land hate and fighting them on the stack is also important. A lot of folks think that you need MLD to combat lands, but I don't think MLD is the answer. Most land decks play more lands, ramp, and graveyard recursion cards than other decks. They recover quickly from MLD while other decks turn into onlookers for the rest of the game.
@CommanderReplay2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think they need to make more cards that have mono color and high commander cost incentives.

One play to consider is using the Vesuva to copy your opponent's Dark Depths. You would get a 20/20 and Vesuva goes to your graveyard, meaning it can repeatedly come back giving you a 20/20 each time (as long as your opponent still controls a dark depths)
@joebierlein99692 жыл бұрын
Can you have more than one 20/20 on your side? I thought the avatar token was legendary? Or perhaps just the land itself is legendary?
@Dalenthas2 жыл бұрын
@@joebierlein9969 Marit Lage is in fact Legendary, but having the option to remake her whenever you need to is pretty sweet.

While Windgrace himself is really strong his precon was split with what the other commanders wanted to do. Personal favorite from that year for me was Brudiclad.

This game definitely demonstrates how fast combo decks would be healthy for the meta. Imo, decks that could consistently combo off on turn 5-6 would be totally appropriate for a high power pod and they would naturally counter noninteractive value decks like Windgrace. It's not even that I dislike Windgrace. I actually have a fringe cedh version of him. But that deck needs to play some stax to not die to fast combos whereas in a casual setting it feels like the general dislike of combos just eliminates all of his natural counters.

This is a visual representation of why MLD should not be frowned upon anymore. I mean why are leaving answers off the table to one of the strongest archetypes in the format.
@CommanderReplay2 жыл бұрын
Yeah its complicated. When you know youre getting a game like this, totally fine. But it can also destroy what otherwise would have been a fun game of magic so its complicated.
@TheBalogna72 жыл бұрын
While I agree that targeted land destruction should be played more in the format, MLD falls in a tough spot game play wise. For starters, a lot of players get upset by MLD, which is understandable (though I think people get too upset if that makes sense). Secondly, MLD isn't really needed until T5-T6 (for fast land deck starts) or even later into the games. At that point, casting MLD basically adds an additional hour of game time revolving around "draw-go" until someone draws mana. Thirdly, MLD is a double edged sword. The person casting it will also lose mana production, and there is no guarantee that they will recover first. Not every deck can (or should) run MLD since casting it will just take them out of the game. Lastly, and expounding upon the previous point, MLD mostly benefits land based decks like Windgrace (who routinely helms MLD decks) as their higher land count and higher ramp spell count allow land decks to recover quicker. I definitely think people need to run more land hate, but MLD sits in a tough spot from both a social contract and game play standpoint.
