I don't think Goff's play collapsed after that big hit. At that moment, he had just thrown a pick-6 and previously fumbled in a key spot. That pick-6 happened on DET's 5th drive. Goff sat out their next drive. Goff played 5 drives thereafter. So it's an even split for Goff before and after. Pre-hit Goff was 8-14 for 129 yards, 1 TD, 1 sack, 2 turnovers (1 INT, 1 fumble lost). After the hit, he was 15-26 184, 0 TDs, 1 sack, 2 turnovers (2 INTs). That's pretty similar. His next INT after the hit was that Sainristil play right before halftime, which was an accurate throw into 1-on-1 coverage that the DB just made a better play on. The key turnover in the 2nd half was the Jameson Williams play that obviously can't be blamed on Goff. His only other turnover was in the final minute down 2 touchdowns in desperation. He didn't have a lot of big misses or near INTs. The offense consistently moved the ball all day but for the killer turnovers. And Goff was struggling with the big mistakes from the get-go.
@connordunn9893Күн бұрын
I wasn’t a good throw if it’s behind the wr 😂
@dcnoleКүн бұрын
@ But it wasn’t behind the WR by much if at all. It was heading straight into his hands but Sainristil jumped the route underneath. In any event, the point was that it was a perfectly good decision to attempt that throw on that play (1-on-1 and it took an excellent play to stop it) and there's no reason to see that as a judgment error indicative of a head injury. Whether it was a perfectly executed throw is kind of beside the point.

It's basically just the hit to the helmet thing, honestly, penalty or not, it wouldn't really change much. Veteran offensive players have been telling people about this for years, the turn over is the most dangerous play and they need to keep an eye out whenever it happens or they get their clock cleaned. People have just kind of accepted that this happened, as a sort of punishment I guess? Basically, if you don't like it, don't turn the ball over kind of thing.

Multiple comments. 1) While I agree that criticizing the play design of the Jamison Williams' pass is unfounded, I do think there's a valid critcism here in terms of when it was called. You were down ten early in the 4th, so the desire to come back quickly is understandable, but this is a game where your offense is moving the ball pretty easily using conventional plays and you still had 11+ minutes, so it's not like you were in desperation mode. Putting the ball in a non QB's hands and asking for a pass inherently means less velocity, less accuracy, and less judgement. The only time your offense has really been stopped in this game is off turnovers. This play is a much higher risk that you don't need in this game. If WAS was stopping you by overpursuing to the point of attack, by all means, show some window dressing and make them pay. But WAS had a lead and wasn't doing great at stopping you. This is the wrong moment to embrace MORE risk. I'm not destroying Johnson for this call, but I do think it was the wrong time and game script for it. He was trying to be too clever. 2) I also think Brady's criticism of Aaron Glenn's approach was correct. I'm not sure Glenn had a 'right' answer to make, his defense was just too depleted. But if there's a 'wrong' answer, it's to blitz Jaden when you have a depleted secondary. Jaden makes quick decisions and has dealt well with blitzes well all year except for like two games when he was hit with disguises that he had never seen before. If your secondary is weak, I think dropping MORE defenders and encouraging Jayden to throw checkdowns would have been wiser. He most likely would have been more than willing to throw those checkdowns, but this is still a team that is undertalented and will make holding or false starts to back themselves up. Keep Jayden in the pocket and let him throw underneath all day would have been the better response. Probably still not a winning answer, but I think it would have given you a chance. 3) Detroit is a different organization now. I expect WAS and DET to meet each other ALOT over the coming decade. Two long-suffering fanbases who recently won the ownership change lottery. If my team hadn't won, Detroit and Baltimore would have been my second choices to win it all. Baltimore just because I'm near there, and Detroit because they deserve it. NFC North fans had best get used to a long and unending run of Detroit division titles. 4) I just don't think Jared Goff is that good. If there's one thing that's going to hold the Lions back in the years to come, it's going to be Goff. He's a better Ryan Tannehill. He's a fair-weather QB. He's great when he's got an elite OL, elite receivers, elite run game, and an elite OC...but I don't think he elevates any of that. They elevate him. And that's not a high percentage way to build a team in the modern game. You CAN win with it, but it's doing it the hard way. 5) I think we as fans like to play the 'regression to the mean' game with injuries, but we should all acknowledge, it's doesn't really work that way. Teams that get injured alot, tend to keep getting injured alot. I think there's alot of different explanatory factors for this. Sometimes you draft players that are injury prone, and it turns out it wasn't luck. Sometimes training regimens aren't good - there was a Skins RB in the 00s (I forget who) who was always hurt...and then someone taught him to stretch better before games and miraculously he started not getting injured. Even high level athletes sometimes have bad habits. When a guy is hurt, his rehab often undercuts his workouts and he has unbalanced muscles where some are weaker than they should be. Sometime bad techniques or teamwork can lead to guys getting hurt more. Don't assume a regression to the mean.

The Lions lost to the Bucs, the Commanders beat themselves Bucs on the road in a Play Off Game. The 49rs led for a lot of the game with the Lions, and the 49rs are no where near as lethal as the Commanders. In the Vikings game, the Lions did not destroy the Vikings, Darnold’s passes were off. If he had connected like he normally does, the Vikings probably would have won that game. The Lions struggled with injuries all season and found a way to win, the Commanders struggled with injuries all year and found a way to win anyway. The Lions put up 31 points, which is about their average. They played their game, but were outmatched. The Lions struggled against mobile QBs all season, the Commanders has one of the most mobile duel threat QBs in the League. The Commanders Coaches are some of the best at adjusting their play in the League. I know you were shocked, but stats on paper do not win a game. Injuries, Goff, Campbell did not lose that game, they are not to blame. The fact of the matter, the Commanders are just a better team than the Lions on the field.

I disagree. The throw on the pick 6 was a terrible decision. Triple coverage when Laporta was wide open just underneath. Bad decision, bad throw. He passed concussion protocol, the Washington defense just rattled him and Goff is not good coming from behind. And as far as the facemask, why in the hell are they calling facemask when they don’t see a hand grabbing the facemask? It’s ridiculous. Meantime, if you breathe on Patrick Mahomes you’re going to get called for roughing. And you see him taking dives on a simple shove. Shits gotta stop.
