What is intriguing about Commando is that it somehow manages to be your typical dumb, over the top, clichéd 80s action movie but at the same time also comes across as completely self-aware and almost a parody of itself. Like you said, straight. Usually a movie is either one or the other. I freaking love this movie.

Very true. It's completely self aware of its own OTT daftness with a knowing level of camp. I mean, God bless Vernon Wells as Bennett. It's a deliciously camp-yet-Macho pantomime of an action flick. And I love it.

At the time Terminator wasn’t Arnold only success. Conan The Barbarian was a big hit. One of the best OST of all time, and a lot smarter movie that what people think it is. It’s the kind of movie that get better when you get older ( like Robocop 1 or First Blood) because you don’t have the tools to understand those movie properly when you are a kid.
@jonaskoelker3 жыл бұрын
As a recent Conan convert, all I can say is So Much Yes! I had fun thinking about the meaning of all the symbolism: snakes, black sun and moon, the 8-armed rudder mirroring the wheel of pain (reincarnation and samsara?), Stygian black lotus (i.e. from the river Styx?), the tree of woe, the riddle of steel. And of course the themes of purposelessness, health vs. unhealthy sexual desires, loneliness, abandonment, loyalty, temptation, pleasure and material comfort versus heroism, and plain old valuing the people you love above everything else. The dialog is very much about characters talking about their decisions in somewhat more general (and thus abstract) terms than what's normal, which makes it easier to see what the same decision principles would mean in your own life, which makes this sword-and-sorcery action-fest more thought-provoking than it has any business being. "Shall we not grab life by the throat, and make it give us what we desire?" // "There comes a time when jewels lose their shine, when gold loses its luster, when even a throne room becomes a prison, and all that's left is a father's love for his child" // "success can test a man's mettle as surely as a powerful adversary". Crom laughs at the naysayers. Laughs from his mountain.

Actually it was Tim Burton's Batman in 1989 that pretty much ended this genre of action movie. When they cast Micheal Keaton as Batman and it was a huge success it showed Hollywood that you didn't have to be a testosterone dripping pumped up alpha male to be an action movie star. After Batman you started to see the rise of the "Average Guy" action movie hero and movies like this were never really made again.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was offered a sequel to Commando, but turned it down. Then that script was re-written to accommodate the new actor Bruce Willis with a character change from John Matrix former soldier to John Maclane a New York cop and became Die Hard (1988).
@Henrik_Holst4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately that is a myth (yes I believed it too back in the day). The fact is that Die Hard begun as the sequel to the 1968 film "The Detective" with Frank Sinatra and is based on the novel "Nothing Last Forever" which is the novel sequel to "The Detective". Sinatra turned it down though since he thought that he was to old for the part and they remade it into a stand-alone film instead. However since Hollywood works the way it does there are of course a chance that the script at some point could have been pitched as a possible sequel to Commando but all of the people involved with the production of Die Hard have denied this over and over.

The problem with movies like this is that everyone shoots from the hip and no one knows how to extract collapsible stocks (or unfold folding stocks). That tendency infected video games in the '90s, but it started in movies even before the '80s. And it's still infecting movies, TV shows, and video games to this day. 2:17 That's not a Bazooka. It's an M202 FLASH. 13:07 It's actually impossible to mistake front from back with one of those. 13:22 That would have killed everyone in that police truck and melted it to the point that its moving parts fused together. The M202 FLASH uses 66mm pyrophoric warheads. 13:46 Four-tube rocket launcher, not "four turret Bazooka." 14:59 Why do movie people think hand grenades are meant to be worn that way? That's a hazard, yo! Hand grenades should be stashed in pouches. 15:06 Valmet M78/83 (also seen in Predator). But why does he flip it upside-down to insert a mag? That's pointless. 15:28 Notice how those hand grenades flop around on that vest rig. 17:14 kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpWtfmCvapV8fqM 18:02 You do realize that's Vernon Wells, right? You know, Wez from 'The Road Warrior'? Also Mr. Igo from Innerspace. And he basically played Wez in Weird Science. 18:54 He should have had that Uzi cocked already. It fires from the open bolt, so it technically didn't need to be cocked. It was only done for dramatic effect. 18:58 What was the point of that chainmail vest if it couldn't even protect him from a blunt pipe?

The Freddy Mercury lookalike is Vernon Wells, who also played the main biker in Road Warrior. And apologies if it was already mentioned

He also played a henchman with a replaceable metal hand in Innerspace.

What is interesting is that this movie started the one liners after the kills trend.

Worth noting that despite how he looks, Vernon Wells who played Bennett was a legit hard man! The final fight he had to do with abroken arm and no cast.

Those soldiers on the island were the best. Let’s all bunch together and run directly at a Special Ops Commando and his direct line of fire. Good Plan !!!

I love 80's action movies.

The single most unrealistic military action movie ever made in film history. But I still freaking love it. Fun fact: the actor who was originally supposed to play Bennet was a slightly skinnier guy and when they hired this guy they didn’t have time to refit the weird Freddy Mercury looking shirt, which is why it looks the way it does. Also Rae Dawn Chong is now married to Jason Mamoa, and when he was a kid she was his Hollywood crush. Once when he was asked who his Hollywood crush was he said “I married her.”

Jason Momoa is married to Lisa Bonet, NOT Rae Dawn Chong.
