To those who are not familiar to the french army, the commandos are no special forces. There are commando groups in the army regiments : parachutists commando in a parachutist regiment, mountain commando in a mountain regiment. Engineering regiments also have combat divers that work like commandos. So commando groups are deployed by their regiment, whereas special forces are deployed by the special operations commandment to do different missions.

They're Special Operations Capable. Much like Force Recon Marines are in USMC. So they do go through pretty much the same training as alot of French Special Operations do. Like you said they just aren't under French Special Operations Command. Except with how today's wars are fought, Special Operations are mostly what they're getting tasked to I would imagine.

By joining the French Foreign Legion first, they also have GCM unit in the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment
