hi! i did the voice for cass in this video! i really likes your takes, but i ESPECIALLY loved your ideas for your own cass based on her spirit blossom skin. once you mentioned her being super pale i was sold immediately. i’m albino myself, and albino representation in characters is either non existent, or really offensive (albino humans don’t have red eyes!) having her be based off of an albino snake, with super pale skin and hair, but piercing red eyes would be an amazing design choice, and pretty damn good representation. as for fun tidbits on the voice, YEAH i can tell nicky didn’t get any help with the lines LMFAO (not that they were bad, they were amazing, it just took him a solid bit for him to get them to me haha) and in regard to enunciation of the S sound a lot, (and this will be a bit of a tangent for me to get to my point) i’m trans, female to male (i dont mind you calling me an actress, i get it!) and in that process, my voice has deepened and has gained a rougher edge, typical of male puberty. since i was an actor before that, female characters are usually what i do 90% of the time, but now theres an added hurdle of getting past this new testosterone sound. i’m REALLY bad at explaining technique, but a really good way to sell a more feminine tone Is to have that kind of emphasis on those s sounds! its a tip used in a lot of male to female transgender voice training. but even aside from that, i’ve been an actor for 7 years, and with the style of acting that league has (typical semi-realistic interactive, not as cartoonish as anime or a … cartoon, but not as grounded as a movie-game), is kinda my specialty. (getting into it because of games like fire emblem, which cass’s original actor voices a character in, really helps lol) anyway to wrap this up, amazing video, and amazing commentary!

People can turn ANY design into a bombshell if they want. R34 exists to prove it. 1:00:35 Completely random idea, no clue if its good, but what if she had the Black Rose design incorporated into her tail? So instead of the spots of darker green, she'd have a curling thorn-covered rose stem made from darker scales that coil up her body. Then to make things really spicy and go all in on the "temptress" theme, the actual rose flower can be around her hips where the snake tail transitions to human torso: because its where her "flower" is. Maybe the flower could be implied through a combination of her scales and cloth. Also, maybe she could have scales going up the sides of her waist and torso while leaving the stomach bare. This not only accentuates her stomach (its the vulnerable, naked human part of her unprotected by scales) while highlighting her hourglass figure. If we're gonna make her fan service might as well full send it!

I dont like his rework but not because its him, i dont like it cuz it looks too much like an anime character. Its stupid. The thing is Cass is tied forever to the idea of the Greek myth Medusa. And when i played the OG Perseus Pantheon (Fucking miss that version of the skin) i would always look at the head on the shield. Because it was Cass. While Cass herself may not be Greek, i think the story should be that she was an illegitimate child or ran into a cave looking for a treasure that was rumored to make her beautiful in the lands of Leagues version of Greece, but instead turned her into a hideous Gorgon whos final insult was allow her SOME semblance of beauty. And for her Greek skin they could go full blown Athenian or Crete themed clothing and tie into Perseus Pantheons lore. Im not saying the guy shouldnt ever take cracks at reworks, im just saying i disagree woth the direction he took.

I think the redesign does the snake-human boundary better by having cassiopeia explicitly wear clothing covering the boundary, rather than it being a weird golden girdle. Maybe the merging point does look 'ugly', and cassiopeia wears clothing that doesn't really 'make sense' to cover that! Maybe it looks fine but she's secretly self conscious about that particular part of her! One of the goals of sexy clothing is to make the concealment just as exciting if not more than what's being concealed, and the veil over that particular boundary might just be that...

But also as an artist it infuriates me that any other type of art or design (ones that VALUE STORYTELLING) tend to be squashed in favor of what's more "marketable". Since we're ranting about kai'sa again, i'll propose one change to her that i genuinely think recontextualizes her entire design: Give her voidy insect legs, styled after a fly. Specifically digitigrade ones. Make sure they are way too thin in places, so it's abundantly clear these have replaced her legs, and aren't just a suit where her legs could feasibly fit somewhere in there. This does the following: Cons: - no ass, probably (Technically you could probably have the new legs start below her butt if it's that important to you, and it might even give you some exciting tension between sex appeal and her monstrous fly legs) - K/DA kai'sa could be hard to do (Though we could also make it an actual statement, i.e. amputees can still be pop idols, if we're feeling brave in the face of xenophobia, give her a fancy iced out version of those running blades maybe) Pros: We have pros on multiple levels here, I'll go into the ones I could identify. Gameplay Clarity: Digitigrade legs underline her insane agility/mobility for an adc; they lend themselves to dynamic posing and mostly just "look faster" than regular human legs. A first-time player can now look at her silhouette and immediately expect that she will probably be fast, even more than with her current design. Representation: I'm not sure we have an amputee (or otherwise disabled) character in league who isn't outright villainous (hi urgot and camille and renata and swain and arguably viktor (am i insane or just spotting a pattern i genuinely don't know)), though I haven't checked the entire roster. Kai'sa could fill that "void" (hehe), giving us a visibly disabled hero. Lore Consistency: We can now actually see that she's been through it. Her childhood in the proclaimed MOST DANGEROUS AND HOSTILE PLACE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD didn't leave her with a flawless vogue body, in fact it literally tore chunks out of her. Reading how she found the suit now calls to mind imagery of her without legs, bleeding, crawling on the floor, helpless, undignified, and how finding the suit saved her just in time. How she would definitely be dead without it, like everyone else. Beyond that, closing her helmet now actually makes her look more monstrous than human. It's now clear that, and why, people would be scared of her. Symbolism: The void is now part of her, not something she could feasibly just take off. Also, without it, she literally has no legs to stand on. This is what makes her special, and this is what allows her to fight. That's all I got for now. You probably won't read this, and I might have said it before, but I do genuinely think my idea is good. If you ever decide to "build a better kai'sa", I really hope you would consider this.

You could technically still have sex appeal with an idea like that. Let's imagine the symbiote found an agonizing Kai'sa with absolutely broken legs and for whatever reason (there's honestly so much space to write lore on how the Void interacts with the material realm) decides to fuse with her lower part and keep the original shape of the legs as an outer shell that dismantles itself to reveal the functional digitigrade limbs behind. Now you have a Kai'sa who's quite literally a monster in hiding, any instinctive movement shatters the symbiote's illusion of humanity. This also reinforces Kai'sa's enmity with Bel'veth as both of them now present human and monstrous traits (in varying capacity but you get my point) but with completely different origins and opposed motivations.

There's something I hate about Riot's business model. It's that they look so uncritically at their negative scores without realizing that it's due to a negative feedback loop. A champion is in disrepair so they become unpopular. The champ is unpopular so they get no new skins. The champ generates no revenue because they receive no new content to draw attention to themselves. And then the cycle repeats. When, like nickyboi said, those updates give massive opportunities for new content and create a much larger fanbase for the character, which Akali and Evelynn, and to a lesser degree, caitlyn, proved beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Heyy Syken! Love your videos as always, you make such great analysis and commentaries even if I don't completely agree with every point. Wanted to pop in and say that I helped Nickyboi as the 3D artist and custom-skin creator for this Cassiopeia redesign. I can say with absolute certainty, YES, you absolutely can theoretically do a fully custom ASU for a champion. Even if they don't have a legendary skin, you can still take some of that data that they use for other champions' legendaries or even newer champs and paste that onto the desired champion. You can have very smooth blending between animations, be able to interrupt animations (at least visually - this won't allow for you to "animation-cancel" for abilities and stuff) and add lots of joints within the rig for all of the other movements that you would want such as the loincloth piece that Cass has here and the "streamers" as Nickyboi calls it (I don't know what to call it either xd). Although it hasn't really been done before, I believe it's also possible to add new voiceline interactions with other champions but no one's ever really had the commitment to look into that deeper. I do think it's possible though from what I've seen. The issue is with such an ambitious project like a fully custom ASU... It takes an INSANE amount of effort and time to create all of this. For Riot, it's easy to get their employees to do it because they get paid to do so and get a huge reward at the end, but for custom-skin creators, it is way too much for us to handle. If we had a huge team of dedicated talents from different disciplines doing their part and we were all happy with not getting paid to do something as ambitious as this, we could absolutely get something put up to the same quality as Riot. You are right though, what we've done so far is as close as we can get without putting an insane amount of time and effort into something like this. If there's someone out there willing to fund an ambitious project like this though, it is absolutely doable. TLDR: It is fully possible to do a custom "ASU" for a champion but it just takes an INSANE amount of effort and time between actually creating a rig, making new animations, and then also following up with creating models and all of the other assets that you would expect for a Riot-made ASU. Also thank you very much for showing your appreciation for the work that we've done. 🙏 And since this video's release, Vanguard has no affect on the use of custom skins! 🙌 They are safe to use at your own risk. Wonderful to hear your thoughts on the matter, but what annoys me is that the human torso on snake body at hip hight design always gets trashed (rightfully so) under the sexualization lense - would reveal the issue of archetype. Not as a monster girl but a very particular subkind and representing it > namely lamias as opposed to gorgons. The gorgon aspects are handled horribly but still influence official cassio‘s Design (Talk of uglyness, magick transformation, petrifying gaze, mythic skin but lacking snake hair) while her behavior, dress and former role was a seductive lamia politician that did not vore you but poison for some reason. Snakes must always poison, can’t immobilize or overpower prey due to being only muscle and spine...

There’s a lot of good ideas about making her more ostentatious, but in trying to picture it I realized that so much was accomplished with the finalized design and artworks. The design felt like it did “less is more” quite perfectly; everything I need to know about the character was well represented in the limited amount of details that were included. I just want to say that about the hypocrisy of youtube, there is an ad on youtube of this game, i don't know the name, but basically the ad is this demon girl very very revealed and she just has a soft blur to hide her MASSIVE cleavage and she walks towards a demon man and then they have these very very sexually charged/softcore corn interactions. It's so insane to me. They also have all these ''waifu games'' ads with just the most absurdlt sexualized anime girl with massive hongedongs hanging out and it's just INSANE. The internet is only corporate greed and hypocrisy nowadays, i really don't know what we can do about this. I hate it. Also great video yead i'm not JUST complaining about youtube haha

46:55 i appreciate you pushing back against this self-deprecation, bc as performative as it is, there probably are artists out there striving to reach this level or at this level who might look at nickyboi mocking himself and feel lesser about their own art as a result. nickyboi, your art is great. its not the type you typically see at riot with more realistic proportions and a more painterly/illustrative rendering, but its competent, its cartoony and fun to look at and you get your ideas across well. its not like theres a singular ideal of an art style and riot artists are closer to it than you are, your art just has a different kind of appeal.

Cassiopeia's rework is obviously geared towards cobras, because Shurima and it's Egyptian coding, but as an American I can see she's got more than a little rattlesnake in her. The jewels in her hair are an allusion to diamondbacks, the spots on her tail look like the spots of massasaugas, and, while I doubt it was intentional, one of the ways we're taught to distinguish rattlers is by their triangular heads. It's less obvious than the monster concept with the rattle and the curved fangs, but if you've grown up with rattlers as your default desert viper and thing to watch out for on walks, you can see the influence on her design. It's also a bit ironic, because rattlesnakes are the furthest from a seductive predator: that rattle has one message and it's "Go away!".

Show the scales slowly going away around the sides of her lower back, which would still hide it from the front and make it so the actual pelvical transformation can be obviated, but make it feel like "guys, we totally thought about it". Maybe that way she feels more realistic (yet not truly) while not going all the way nor making her feel that much of a monster.

I will never understand going into the headspace at riot where they think updating old champions isn't productive or anything. Look at the reworks they have made. Like Poppy. They've been making so many Poppy skins ever since her remake because it made her a genuinly popular champion. The same goes for most other champs they remade. H*ck some of my favourite champs are Poppy, Shen, Taric and Kayle who they completely redesigned. While new champions mostly just got people talking for a month. Also old players definitly have more insentive to come back to play the game when they hear Jax got reworked than there being a new femboy mage.

Man I felt your rants on how wanting non-sexualized designs for female characters is demonized so much. Obviously there's nothing inherently wrong with eye candy, but when it feels like its just there to feed into the idea that female characters cannot ever be anything other than the epitome of beauty, it sucks. We have only recently started to see artists break out of this mold of making every female character follow the same generic sexy guidelines of character design and everyone is treating it as if we are never going to see attractive women in fiction ever again. They get so much hate just for going outside the box, as if the existence of that is some affront to mankind that should undermines the status of women in society (of course I'm not a woman so I can't speak on that much). I've never understood it; if you look at 90% of fiction, its going to have female characters that are designed to look attractive, its still the overwhelming norm. If anything it feels like the very idea of deviating from that beauty standard is seen as blasphemous. "Why would anyone want to look at anything that isn't beautiful? For a million reasons!" Good way to summarize it, I think.

A good video, just wanted to say thank you for producing these commentaries. Also just wanted to note, the whole talk about subjectivity. THANK YOU! It just annoys me to no end that whenever i criticize something i have to make constant disclaimers of (This is MY OPINION, its not OBJECTIVE) and then STILL have people say that i claim objectivity. Its just so annoying. Joseph Anderson made a video on this topic called "Subjectivity is implied" and i hope to god more people try to follow what is said in that video.
