Ok a few questions answered. These fish are all for human consumption. Costco sells them as salmon burgers, the roe or eggs are extremely valuable served as Ikura in sushi restaurants the milt is eaten in Japan also. There a very few negative aspects to this program, the most negative is the concentration of the effort can make a few unpleasant experiences between the boats.the most valuable aspect here is the fact that these are new dollars not value added dollars and the hatchery program is paid for by a cost recovery program derived by a portion of the catch.

If you order Chum from a restaurant, your a f**king idiot and you should do a little research before you order Salmon again. The one thing you might order from I high end restaurant would be and caviar / the eggs from this type of salmon. So unless your a plant or a cat/dog then I don't recommend ordering Chum / dog Salmon from any restaurant. Sorry for being so direct but I work in this fishery and to come off as if they ar stepping in the fish on purpose is a very improper statement and these guys are busting there ass. Let alone people don't usually eat the meat of these salmon, mainly the eggs. You want good salmon then order Sockeye (Red) Salmon or King Salmon or Coho (silver) Salmon. Stick to those 3 then you will have a good meal but don't order Chum (dog) Salmon or Humpy's (pink) Salmon. Have a good day!

The plunger is shaped to project a loud 'pop' down into the water in order to scare the fish back into the net. Before the half-purse (when the rings come up and are pinned with the hook) there are plenty of places for the fish to escape. The plunger guy tries to prevent that. Some boats even have a guy plunge at the stern before the gear has started to come over the block.

Without disrespecting these hardworking fisherman, these videos sadden me to no end. This isn't a large boat at all either. Incredible haul obviously, but so sad. I love eating fish too, I'm just blown away at how we have learned to just beat mother nature in everyway imaginable in order to feed our bellies and make a living. Good work, Fisherman 1 salmon 0

this is a well managed fishery and the harvestss have been good for many years
@nataliechouinard263611 ай бұрын
Bullshit this is not a well managed fishery the Alaskan boats talked almost all the fish that come out the betting sea and brag about it Nd are decimating fish runs that cannot get back to their streams further south .Just ask the commercial guys I British Columbia and Washington and Oregon and California as their boats sit at the dock because of historic low returns

looks like bycatch was octopus, flounder/halibut, and other juvenile fish. and the bycatch that went overboard was alive. (unlike earlier comment stating otherwise)
@aaroncherry29935 жыл бұрын
It's hard to minimize bycatch in a narrow inlet. Flounders are tough fish and have a 95% survival rate when thrown back in ocean. Jellyfish are everywhere, all the time. Very annoying I must say.

Why do the fish bleed? The water in the hold is so bloody, why is that? Is that Roe and not blood? I am not seeing a lot of by-catch that others are complaining about. I found this to be an interesting and informative video, thank you for sharing, and answering questions, really helpful.

I think what pissed me off most two big huge commercial ships I'm talking couple hundred yards each off the Columbia River. Lincoln City. Maybe two to three miles off the beach. The net Probably two miles long. Or longer The Chinese

why is the person hitting the water?
@littlegoobie5 жыл бұрын
a cup at the end of the stick makes a popping sound that's supposed to scare the fish back into the nets and from swimming out the open end of the net before they close it up by lifting it.

Yes they will. Thanks to hatcheries and conservation, there are more of them around today then there ever were. Read up on the salmon fishery. Also these salmon are canned and not the best ones for eating.

Mainly just used for there eggs bruh. If you eat Chum then you should understand the best. An as far as texture goes from King & Sockeye and then you go and take a bite out of chum Salmon or humpy. The demand for chum eggs is thee most sought after eggs out off all the salmon than any other salmon. The rest of the fish usually is fertilizer or pet food. So to say that your chum was MORE mushy because of the fisherman "walked all over". I think is was more mushy because just in general all the fish were in spawn phase of there life so they changed colors (from the fish going up a creek into fresh water then some of them come back out of the creek when the tied goes out.). Anyways these guys did a good job of working together and also for catch a telephone pole. Well note to all: that you could have a side job selling firewood after all the twigs and branches and logs you accumulate throughout the day. An if your skiff man helps you out then chances are your skipper won't be on board with your side job. Those weren't "DIVING DOGS". Those must have been sleeping dogs haha jk. Thanks for sharing the video. We just put our net away and the bait shed is on and ready to head out longlining (60k lbs of Halibut & 40k lbs of Black Cod) and then it's time to prepare for a short and we'll needed / wanted vacation. The price of dogs (chum) this year went up to $1.20 lb so that 60,000 lbs set right there, today would had made each deckhand (full crew share of 10%). Would had made you a little over $7,000 each. So that I would say would be a very good payday for about 30 minutes worth of work not counting the off load time once you hit the tender! Nice job fellas!

Alaska has a limit on how big the fishing vessels can be for salmon. 58 feet for seiners. Hence, the term limit seiners.
