Thank you, G! I have asked my French husband 1000 times to explain how you can make someone understand whether you mean like or love and he has never explained it in any more detail than “they just know by the context”. Thank you for finally ending my confusion and frustration!!! Muah! I have truly learned soooooo much from you over the years. You really deserve to have so many more followers because your content is fantastic! (please ignore the American hyperbole, I really am being genuine with my compliments) 😉

Very interesting because in English if you add an adverb to the word like or love, then the adverb makes the verb MORE powerful. So in English if I added "beaucoup" (a lot) to the verb Aimer, I would think it means "I like him a lot" ....not just "I like him"...or the sentence could mean in an English speaker's mind I love him A LOT. So the adverbs "a lot" (beaucoup) and well (bien) are thought of / used differently depending upon if you are speaking in English or if you are choosing to use the French verb "Aimer" and to speak French. Wow....how tricky!!

Can you add Cherie to the end of Je t'aime? Or will that lessen it?
@wattana62
@wattana62 5 жыл бұрын
Chérie is not an adverb, so, it's similar to, for exemple, Paul love Marie ; so in this case, Paul could say to Marie: "I love you, darling" (because chéri(e)=darling). Some girls like using chéri(e)(s) to their very good friend(s) too). This will not lessen the meaning if you use it for your girl(boy)friend or your wife/husband, and for buddies, it's more friendly obviously.

Thank you, This was very helpful! In English we have two words "like" and "love" and you don't confuse them. It's easy. In French you have Je t'amie (I love you") but if you add beaucoup (a lot) it means less?!?! How can you add a lot to something and it mean less. That's crazy! My friend said you can say "Tu me plais" and it means I like you.
