Top 4 teams according to rankings get a bye week. You still have your 5 Autobids just seed them accordingly.. Re seed in the second round. Best team plays worst team left. Actually maybe let the 1 seed pick their opponent from the 4 teams that advance from the first round. That would be Drama. Imagine the 1 seed pick who ever they play the media is gonna go crazy with that. The story line would be #1 seed must think the team they picked is no good. Now that team would have extra fire 🔥 to prove they can beat the one seed. Let it play out like a bracket once the 2nd round is set

Playoff Fix: Top 4 Conference Champions get bye, but arent ranked in the tourney yet. Then first round happens, and those teams are ranked in the tourney. 1-8. Once you have 8 teams left, you re rank them. This year my opinion it would have been 1.Oregon 2. Georgia 3. Texas 4. Ohio State 5. Penn State. 6 Notre Dame7. ASU 8. Boise State. Oregon vs boise State. Georgia vs Asu. Texas vs Notre Dame. Ohio State vs Penn state. A lot more competive games and your not ending the year with an 8 vs 7 seed, that looks bad for ranking. (Idea from a Middle School PE teacher/ HS Football Coach who has made a lot of tournament brackets! )

Everything you said except the BCS rankings determine the first round bye. Currently the B1G and SEC are on top so they will get it anyway, but leave the door open for change and close the door on those 2 conferences bullying everyone into submission with money and board members. This is sport not politics.

So you convinced me that a 14 team playoff would be better, however, I would disagree with you, that we need to reward the conference champions more. They already get a bye, I understand your idea of making it more important to get the championship and trying to put importance on that, but I think the beautiful thing about this post season is that it showed just what happens when you don’t have home-field advantage, we saw a lot of upsets, granted, some teams I don’t think should’ve gotten the bye that did but we got a lot of teams that did well during the regular season, but didn’t do well in the postseason, they might’ve done better if they had a home-field advantage. I don’t like fans happen to go from New Orleans to Las Vegas to Florida to Dallas to watch that game but I don’t think that the huge advantage a home field would give those teams is the best option. I would like to hear your thoughts on the payout structure that they are supposedly trying to change for the postseason. Seems like a clear advantage for Notre Dame not being in the conference to get all that money, free and clear and does seem to create a barrier for entry for some of the smaller schools is the Big Ten and SEC are taking 40% of it no matter what.

Here’s one: no preseason rankings until week 6. That gives you 2 weeks in conf games and then they can compile what you have done in your weeks prior to give you a justifiable ranking. This helps eliminate the overinflated SEC teams like LSU, Miss State, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, A&M being “ranked” early to give easy wins to other teams as well as teams in other conferences not getting a fair evaluation of their record.

Big Ten could have let them in any of the numerous times in the past Notre Dame wanted to join. They didn't let them join. They cannibalize other conferences. Force their teams to play more in conference games which ends long series like Michigan v Notre Dame. Then their fans all whine that it isn't fair Notre Dame is independent and says they play a weak schedule. Well geniuses, schedules are made 2-3 years in advance. You can't know what will happen too teams in the interim. Look at these teams 2-3 years ago. FSU 10-3, USC 11-3 It isn't like they were scheduled and not reframe thought they would fall off. Nobody asked in 2022 would have said that FSU would be like a one win team in a couple years and USC would struggle to finish at .500 Notre Dame last year completed their series with OSU and Clemson, but I guess they just have thought those teams would randomly stink and that's why they scheduled them. Bad luck on for them that they started playing Clemson when Clemson was winning titles. They scheduled a season for opening road game at TAMU, one of, if not THE, toughest stadiums for a road team to win at. They scheduled Miami and Miami backed out. This whole BS narrative about weak schedules needs to go away. If them beating 3 top 10 teams, 2 of them top 5, to get to the title game, after defeating more bowl teams than anyone in the nation during the regular season, doesn't tell people that Notre Dame is for real, you're just an ignorant hater and a casual.

I really enjoyed all of this episode hearing your ideas to help propel College football to be more fan and home field oriented. However, as a huge fan of THE Ohio State and the BigTen I don’t think conferences should get autobids as you suggested. With the SEC and BIG10 getting 4 for example. The landscape of College football changes so drastically that method would have to be revised once a new dominant conference comes to the forefront. No conference should get a certain amount of autobids but instead use your coupling system with bowl games to figure seeding out in the playoff as well. Edit: Or I guess what could work is give the most autobids to the conference with the best record and then go down the power 4 giving each descending conference less autobids.
@ThomasPaineandFriends

@andrewsanford
@andrewsanford 12 сағат бұрын
6:40 I respectfully disagree with the SEC and B1G getting 4 auto bids. A long standing problem is the self-reinforcing loop that has resulted in top talent going to a limited number of programs. This idea would continue that problem. I think a better solution is a 16-team playoff is: All 10 conference champions get an auto bid 6 at-large bids (or 4 if we do a 14 team playoff) This gives every team in every conference the opportunity to play for a natty, and talent would be more distributed. Related to this: Any poll that uses preseason rankings should not be used. These are hypothetical rankings that don’t account for what actually happens on the field. Yes, they’re fun. But for relatively more serious things, like rankings, they shouldn’t be a factor.

Excellent improvements Commissioner...as assistant Commissioner I propose these 4 improvements...1-every player has his name on his jersey 2-the kickoffs must land in the field of play and be returned...3-no taking a punt returners head off when he catches the punt when he hasn't signalled for a fair catch...there should be a 3 yard safe area that protects the punt returners...4-coaches should have 2 coaches challenges on penalties or non called penalties...too many games are spoiled by referees errors...some can ruin a season for a team...too important for the game we love...as for targeting I find they get right most of the time...and not my biggest issue...sometimes it is inevitable just because of the angles and speed of the contact...I can live with your need to improve it Commissioner...

I enthusiastically support nearly everything you have proposed and wouldn't be against any of it. But one issue that continues to bother me relates to TV coverage. I have two issues, the first is that all of the playoff games should be available for anyone to watch free of charge, especially since there are such a substantial number of commercial breaks which should provide enough revenue for the network and the NCAA. The second issue: there are too many breaks in the game due to TV commercials which has had a significant impact on the game itself that is obvious to anyone who has attended a game. What is the best way to play the game in this regard and how can we make that happen - and shouldn't we make that happen if we really do care about the sport? I know there must be other ways to fund the broadcasts because they do it in other countries and with other sports. I do not see the entertainment industry talking about this, or maybe I am just not tuning into the right things? But I do know it does NOT have to be the way it is now. This can be changed if the NCAA wants it to change or if enough fans demand it to change.

Some good ideas here. No moving Navy and Army to beginning of season. That’s a winter late season game and always should be. Also, it’s unlikely you can cram this into September thru December. If anything, as temperatures continue to rise, the college football season will get pushed later. Some of the games are almost impossible to have outdoors in August and September. You’re gonna run into wet bulb temperatures killing people. As none of these stadiums are domed.

klatts proposed playoff structure is possibly the worst thing i have ever seen. the best way to do a playoff is 8 teams at the bowl sites. There should be no automatic qualifiers and the seeding should be determined by averaging the AP and the coaches poll. This would keep the number of games to a reasonable number to avoid more injuries and keep regular season games important.

I like the idea of the ping pong ball type of random scheduling, but I would make it a home and home 2 year schedule. So if Tennessee plays at Oregon one year then they automatically get Oregon at home the next year. It would keep it fair so a team doesn't get on a run and get home games every year, plus it would create a 2 year rivalry where if the losing team in the first year is the away team, they have a revenge factor playing at home the next year.

This is a ridiculous analogy my guy. If you paid attention, he’s clearly more upset that Oregon, having an undefeated season and in the context of football knowledge the best regular season (12-0), should have had an easier route to the national championship. If OSU had won some of those key games such as the game against Michigan, and perhaps even went to the big 10 championship and beat Oregon, they would deserve the same treatment too. It’s exactly how the path to the Super Bowl is in the NFL. You saying “if they were so good, why didn’t they win” is like an Oregon fan saying if OSU was so good, why didnt they win against Michigan (who Oregon blew out in the regular season in Ann Arbor)

52:17 my only thing about this rule, is that it shouldn’t be given to the other team as a touchback, but you shouldn’t get to keep the ball at the 1. You should be able to maintain possession but, if you fumble through the endzone, the ball get spotted at the 10 yard line, unless it was 4th down. In which case, it would be a loss of possession and count as a touchback, giving the other team the ball at the 20. You shouldn’t lose possession if you fumble at the one and the ball goes across the front corner of the endzone, out of bounds. But you also should still be penalized to some extent, because you are still the one who fumbled the football. So you get backed up to the 10 yard line, with an, ”__ & Goal to go”, from there. If you would’ve gained a first down, based on where you fumbled the ball, relative to the line to gain, you get to maintain having gained the First Down, and now it’s First & Goal, from the 10. If you were already in a “Goal to go” set of downs, then it just becomes the next down, and you have to move back to the 10. Unless it’s fourth down obviously, but I already covered that.
@markr8954
@markr8954 12 сағат бұрын
Hey commish Klatt, first want to say that all these changes would be better than the current system, I appreciate your thought. My only change would be to the Qualifying games for the playoffs. While the SEC and Big10 are the best now, we want the talent to be distributed throughout our sport, and thus the Qualifying spots should be cross conference, with say the 3rd Seed SEC facing the 1st seed ACC team. That way, conferences can win the right to hold Championship games and byes instead of forever having two conferences dominate the byes/talent pool in recruiting. An expansion on this idea could include the bowl games earning points for their conference. So a tier 1 bowl win in the Orange Bowl would get the conference 5pts, while a tier 2 bowl win in the Pop Tart bowl would earn 3pts. I’d love to see some sort of bowl promotion/relegation system based on sponsorship or something similar. Conferences should be rewarded for having teams be bowl eligible + have clearly defined metrics for advancement between conferences

Great content Joel! I think you need to also address the ranking issues where a team plays such a weak schedule that they end up highly ranked and cannot back it up (ex. Indiana this past season). I think a point system based on playing ranked teams or such as team quadrants would help equalize schedules - similar to College Basketball.

Adding a couple of fixes - 1. G5 has a Championship game that doubles as a CFP play-in game. 2. Post-season tournaments of 4 (grouped by ranking). So the first four out would play a tournament (Bama, Miami, SC, & Ole Miss), then the next four. The bowls can be used at the championship game for the mini tournaments. 3. The bowl-winners get a home game in the new "lottery" non-conf scheduling system. More Elaborate Fix - Cross Conf Play-in Games I like the 4-4-2-2-1-1 model but many oppose it because of "fairness" in giving SEC & B10 Conferences double the amount of teams. So we will instead give all the conferences equal opportunity to get their teams into the playoffs by making a cross conference play-in week. Who gets in? Start with Conf Champs for each getting in. Plus G5 Championship winner & 1 at large team (decided after play-in games). That gives 8 spots left. Now take the 2nd best B10 team & have them play the 5th best Big12 team. This year would have been - PSU vs Baylor. Winner is in the playoff. Then have the 3rd best B10 team play the 4th best Big 12 team. That would have been Indiana vs Colorado. Then 4th Best B10 vs the 3rd best Big12, BYU vs Ohio St. Finally the 5th best B10 team plays the 2nd best Big12 team. Illinois vs ISU. PSU vs Baylor Indiana vs Colorado Ohio St vs BYU Illinois vs Iowa St You would use this same format for the SEC vs ACC. Under this format each conference has equal amount of teams that have a shot to get into the playoffs. Clemson vs LSU Miami Vs Alabama Syracuse Vs Tennessee Louisville Vs Georgia At the end its possible that the B10 & SEC get 5 teams in each, or they could only get 1 team. It all depends on how good their teams really are. This also creates a fun dynamic of Conference Rivalries.

Klatt For President!! Also would love to hear your thoughts on this idea Commissioner Klatt: 1. Reduce scholarships to 75, (similar to the NFL 53 man roster) - I think this would help disperse the top talent 2. And each time a player transfers from a 'lower' conference to a 'higher conference' the higher conference team has to pay the lower conference team a certain dollar value, that way the lower conference team can go attract those 1, 2, 3 maybe 3 star kids that the bigger conferences want once their developed, and have the resources to do that.
