I've actually pictured how the conversation would go and I think the ladies at the salon probably got a big kick out of learning that their bleaching product also restores those ugly beige computer cases back to a nice off-white color. Then again, that's only if the ladies at the salon are old enough to know what these computer cases even looked like. If they are too young then they probably just go "ohhhhh ok" and think he's probably some weirdo. He probably told them what he uses it for when he went to buy it and they were like, "Oh honey you need to STOP doing this you're making your hair all fall out!" and then he tells them and they all have a laugh. Then there's an older lady in the chair getting her hair done and she overhears this and she knows what those ugly beige boxes look like and she gets it and maybe she's got a husband whose got an old Commodore 64 in the basement and she asks if maybe he can can restore that as a surprise for her husband and then you know I need to stop thinking about this and start my day already what am I doing with my life

Regarding the keyboard feet: Stick with double-sided tape! You went with double-sided tape to reattach the TRS-80 Color Computer badge because that's what was originally used; makes sense here, too.

Informative and very well executed video, thanks for that! 2-component epoxy is worth trying, too. It forms a very tough bond, but requires 24h drying off and some screw clamps to add some pressure and therefore to finalize it properly in the end. With epoxy based adhesives, you can basically attach and fix anything outdoors as well as indoors. 7:10 To save some time, effort and energy why not just take out every key and wash them in a washing machine with other laundry in mild temperature? Collect all of the keyboard keys in a lingerie wash bag, for example, and voíla :) I use to wash everything in machine wash...

He needs like 4 to 6 paving stones that fit in the container. Stack them into the container until you're just below the lip at the top with the parts in there. You're going to displace a lot of water, so it should work out the same, but now you're at the top of the container and the shadow cast by the sides is not as big of a deal.

I remember "repairing" my brother's C128D in the 80ies … It fell off my bike (had a little accident) and the disk drive was loose, dumping around internally. When I arrived at my friend's home, we opened it up and noticed that the board also broke off its mounts. As we didn't have proper parts to fix this mess, we used a lighter ans some way-too-big screws to melt the board back again - and two empty toilet rolls to press the floppy drive back in its place. My brother never noticed, anything had happened to his computer. And it ran without any problems for many years. Those things were built like a tank.

Great episode as always. If you're still looking for a solution to get the rubber feet to stick, some contact cement will work really well. Apply just a little on the feet and the key board, wait until both are at the tacky consistency of a sticky note, and then stick them together. After 24 hours they'll stick together like it was always meant to be. You can find contact cement at any major home improvement store such as Lowe's or Home Depot

You were blessed with good patience. I tried to take apart a controller (PlayStation 2 to be exact) and I was fine... Until I had to put it together. It wouldn't go together and the buttons fell out and L 2 and R 2 would get stuck down. It completely didn't work afterwards. So it's useless. I have a clear plastic one that is way cooler that I fixed before. So the point is. I would end up smashing it.

To reattach those rubber feet, I'd suggest the same type of double-sided tape smart phone repair shops use to attach screens onto the phone bodies. Usually those rolls are rather thin, but one can always pull several strips over the rubber feet. I use this double-adhesive for all kinds of things myself. really useful. Sticks really well, and can be removed if need be. It's thin too so it doesn't add much. Just google up "3M Adhesive Sticker Tape LCD Screen".

Over two years too late on the response, but what works great for me in regard to adhesive for feet, case badges and so on is good old rubber cement. It goes on strong but can be removed with heat (hairdryer) if need be. And it does not damage the plastic as other glues or adhesives may do.

I always clean the cords. I usually use a paper towel soaked in Windex. When cleaning keys, I usually put them in a large plastic cup with a generous helping of dish soap and hot water. I've never tried to retrobright anything though. I also find it kind of ironic that you spend all that time cleaning up a C128D and then to test it, you use a C64 game.

Being that black absorbs all waves of visible light, and infrared... You should likely get yourself a similar tote, but of the clear plastic variety. Amplify that sun rather than effectively block it out entirely. Would only help get all the various angles as well... as it would be more likely to propagate and spread the UV as well.

It occurs to me, if you can retro-brite on the stove without direct UV light, it shouldn't be too difficult to rig up a stand over a butane or propane burner and put a large metal (disposable foil roasting or other) pan over it for the larger pieces. It would be consistent and controllable, and you wouldn't be reliant on or restricted by the sun.

Try 3M weatherstripping adhesive from the autoparts store, spread a thin layer on both the feet and the keyboard pocket (a little dab will do) WAIT for the adhesive to become tacky (or it won't stick) and then press the key into the pocket on the keyboard

You should get a UV led light strip and forget about the weather. It works really well

Biggest deal on my 128D is the bad drive head. Still haven't replaced it yet. Got one just sitting here as soon as i get around to it

I love the intro on this channel :) And of course, the content and the 8 bit guy himself :) That keyboard sure is messy. I wonder if besides the bugs bunnies (I mean dust bunnies), there are not some traces of jizz inside :))

Remember that game, but didn't play on a PC, so funny..... For the feet, try the red cell phone double sided adhesive tape, or the black (adhering the frames together). If these don't work, nothing will; as I use daily for cell phone & electronics repair for customers (never had a warranty replacement on a device yet after using this stuff). Cheers, A

So this is totally weird. I started to watch the video and had to leave my computer for awhile. When I came back, I saw the latest email from Dave on his Kickstarter so read through that. I saw something about the music in his new game, which linked to the Kickstarter page. He has three tracks on it for PC, Tandy, and AdLib versions of the music sample. Took a quick listen at each and came back to this video at around 10:30 mark. So Dave is putting the 128D back together and low and behold it's the same music picking up right from where I left off on the Kickstarter page. Totally random.

The music played on your videos is so wonderfully and quintessentially 80's. I assuming this is made with analog synths?? Do you compose it yourself? Great job and keep up the good work!
