Commodore 64C repair with faulty colour ram and restore a modded system to original C64C hardware

I have a few Commodore 64C systems to look at in this video.
1. Untested Ebay C64C with tape and PSU
2. PCB only brought as working with no VIC and SID
3. Case and dead PCB I brought and modded to have a PI inside.
All three boards are the same revision 250469 C64C.
So I will look at the Ebay system, test and repair the faults. It had a bad power switch, faulty colour ram and SID. I use parts from the old board I used to make the PI system to fix the ram and end up using a Nano Swin SID. Then I test the board with missing VIC and SID and again use the spares board to get working, This was a very nice board so I use the original SID from the spares and put this into the clean ebay case.
I then I remove the PI mods from the 2nd scruffy case and use the board with the replaced colour ram and swin SID to get this restored back to original hardware.
I did cap kits on both working boards and cleaned the pcb off camera.

Nice troubleshooting your first C64 repair -- is that correct, first C64 repair? I knew you'd figure out those first two ICs weren't the colour RAM. I guess Donkey Kong Arcade is officially now the go-to SID test game.😉 Nice fix. Another one saved. I look forward to your Datasette repair.

Yes it was my first C64 repair so I am happy to have both working by the end. I tested the Datasette and it worked, so it would just be a clean, new belt and test. I already did two others so was not so interested to show a 3rd especially when I have an amiga 500 next.Had to finish some work first so I hope to find time in the next week. Now if I could find another c64c perhaps with a blank screen I would take on the challenge.

Nice intro, and LOL @ measuring safe distance :o) Great job! It can get confusing looking at the IC numbers reported by some versions of the diagnostic cart, as the IC numbers are different between C64 / C64C etc. The main RAM is DRAM btw, not SRAM! The colour RAM is SRAM though!

I never worked on a c64 and was the first time with the dead test so all new to me. I did think the labels for the chips in the dead test would depend on the version of the boards after. I also worked the colour ram out after watching a few of your older c64 videos, so thank you !

I found that the PAL version of the 64C is easier to find and mod to NTSC with a new crystal and VIC chip

I really like your 3-D printed power supply box.I don't have any original Commodore power supplies, just built a couple of my own. I swap between dead test/diagnostic cartridge 781220 and 586220 to verify abnormalities. The 205469 short board is odd enough ast it is!

this psu was ok on the c64c short board, but as soon as I tried on a long board it couldn't provide enough current on the 9v ac. I now have a psu from sven peterson and printed another case that looks like a c64c brick.
