I always find it tragic to hear from David Pleasance - how frustrating they had a such a good manager and they had to mess up his plans. That Mehdi Ali should have been dethroned. Grew up with a Vic 20 then Amiga. Always had a love for commodore products. Such a loyal fan base.

Super find and loved the video and interview. I had forgotten Commodore had died in 1994 and I was certainly using my A1200 with a squirrel scsi to PC box which was my PSU, HDD and CD-ROM. Also an 030 accelerator. After finding and subscribing to your channel, I have found my A500, A590 and I am sure I had the add on HDD in the loft. Also found my A1200 and PC box to power it, my CD32 and 1084s monitor. Used to own a 17” multi sync (if that is the right term) monitor but that died and is now gone. If I can get these running, I would love one of these and would be happy with paying £100 to £150. Just a note, also found my old Atari 800xl.

Oh man, if I *did* have an Amiga 1200 back then, the CD1200 would've been the last birthday and/or Xmas gift I'd ever ask for! What a beauty... perfectly matches up with the 1200 and bringing CD32 compatibility right to the table with the Akiko chip! I sincerely hope to see a Kickstarter to help bring the CD1200 to reality! Even if I don't own an A1200 myself, I'd still support it anyway because Amiga projects deserve love and support!

Great video Dan, I remember seeing this thing pictured in magazines back in the day. I'd definitley be interested in picking one up if a new production run is mooted (£200ish something like that?), would fit in nicely with CD32 themed A1200 case and keycaps.

I think all of us that owned an Amiga back in the day, are shocked and sad that it never became the dominant platform. :( Shapeshifter showed we had a better machine than the Mac back then, PC-Task and various GVP and even the Siamese system proved we could have done so much more . After my Atari 800XL , (I even bought the 5 1/4 floppy drive from Silica systems in Selfridges! ) the Amiga seemed s advanced, I got the A500 (Rom 1.3) and after a few weeks carefully cut some solder track to covered my "Slow fast Ram" expansion card to 1MB of "Chip Ram." I then got the A1200 on its release, with a GVP12430+ trapdoor card, and 1MB RAM (Damn that GVP RAM was dear), added a 68882 (The only thing that accelerated was AIBB Beachball raytrace to around 9 seconds)... Then read an article in CU Amiga about the Micronik? Expansion card and tower, (it added 3x Zorro 2 card slots) in an ATX Tower and cost around £400, I ended up with one and loved it, added a CD ROM, then picked up a Cheap A3000, added an 060 and Cybervision 64/3D. Hell the Amiga is probably my first love, these days I have a few Macs (MacBook Pros, 5,1 and 6,1 Mac Pros) and love them but if I saw a kitted out 040 A4000T I would be tempted. RIP Amiga, you should have kicked the Mac and PC's But!

Mega! Mega! Mega!! Awesome, amazing, wonderful! Thanks guys for this story finally given for such a long awaited white elephant, and we get to see Davids reaction. I remember seeing this in magazines and I even saw third party devices which had a similar design. Yes with just a little bit more money, CBM UK could have a pot of gold on their hands. But they argued this would compete with CD32 sales, and so rather than do that. So this is a bit like the Ben Heck SNES prototype, only this time they could clone a mould of this shell, and sell it to A1200 owners as a Christmas sidecar addon. Maybe someone will build a real CD-Rom into the case, and there you go, its done deal. Or it could make a nice pop-up ashtray or something.

Dan what I think really would take off is a CD 1200 clone that looks the same size as this is made as an all in one self contained Amiga Emulator, that is compatible with classic CD32 discs, can also read images from DVD rom discs eg .adf images, WHDload support, has HDMI output, MicroSD card slot, USB Mouse and Keyboard ports etc otherwise I think the market may be too small to justify a large production run as it only useful for A1200 owners who want to play CD32 games, a secondhand CD32 would be cheaper. if you look how popular the mini NES and SNES consoles have been, a really well put together Amiga Mini, small, reliable and good quality with a high backwards compatability A500, A600, A1200 would sell like hot cakes at around £100-£150 for full compact hardware amiga clone.

Cd32's are not cheap they certainly cost more on the second hand market than than you realise
@KarlUKmidlands
@KarlUKmidlands 6 жыл бұрын
I did not say they were cheap!, I meant it would cost less to buy one than a brand new add on, I own a number of CD32's myself they are currently around £130 on ebay from Analogic who seem to have old unboxed units, so I can't see a brand new CD1200 type add on being produced for less than this considering the fairly small target market the production run for injection moulding the case alone can cost thousands for the initial setup then you have to add on the pcb, components, optical drive, psu and assembly and delivery costs, be very surprised if it costs less, sound like a cool idea though resurrecting a never released amiga addon :)

If development where to go through and progress forward a new option based on the old design, Without a shadow of a doubt I would buy one, A fair price in my mind per unit to the end user would sit around £200 It would be nice if the trapdoor expansion module could contain some modern hardware to reduce space and enable the addition of further memory (or memory bank) and possibly room to upgrade the CPU (similar to the vampire cards) or perhaps a real 060? (perhaps a bit too much?) This sort of expansion could take a stock amiga and make it a wonderful rig for someone to enjoy the full amiga experience. I have been a diehard amiga fan since i had my first 1200 back in the day, ive been gagging for a 4000 for years but im working with my rev 1.4 a2000 with some upgrades here and there. If this where to be a reality i would invest again in a stock 1200 as well as buy the CD1200 and board in a heartbeat. Side note, I really enjoy your work on KZbin keep up what you do man, its appreciated! and if you are ever in need of any soldering/PCB related assembly work, my time and iron is always open for work for any amiga enthusiasts/fans in need. Peace out! :)

People think the Nintendo Playstation was big news, but everyone _knew_ the whole story of that. Finding a prototype was the real news event. The CD1200, until this was found, was basically vaporware that had had a single trade show and a bit of press. To see one actually existing is huge, and to hear the story behind it, moreso. Just as the Nintendo Playstation would have changed the entire gaming landscape if Sony and Nintendo's relationship hadn't broken down, the CD1200 is an example of what could have been. Imagine if Commodore had gotten onto CD-ROM early, and gotten it right. Of course, the CD1200 would have arrived too late to save the day, but it's a glimps of what might have been, if they'd developed and released it in a timely fashion. It would have stopped the whole debacle of stockists holding 1200s they couldn't sell as the CD32 was launching. 1200 owners would have had an upgrade path, but the CD32 would have been the new user standard. Everybody would have won.

I waited so patiently for this drive to be released, and I'm still waiting really. I'll probably be waiting forever, however if someone could see themselves in a position where considering a kick-starter to make a run of these drives to be an intriguing adventure, with the copyright holder's permission of course, then you have at least one supporter in me. I think a fair price would be £199 if it was a complete package, with a nice Commodore bundle box and a software pack e.g. Super Stardust, Pinball Illusions, Superfrog, Deluxe Paint 5, Digita Office, a Dictionary/Thesaurus CD, Encyclopedia, World Atlas and Recipe Collection CD If an FMV version might be possible then it could be £80 more and include Microcosm, Cannon Fodder and a couple of Video CDs e.g. Explorers, Phantom of the Opera and Babylon 5 Series 1. It should also include two white edition CD32 pads with 3m cables. It'd be great to tie it in with a brand new CD32 game. How about an official release of Doom that utilises the AKIKO? ...and an 030/060 + extra RAM too to encourage people to upgrade. Okay, now I've really gone back to 94 :)

The solution is a $500us shell containing the akiko as an asic and a 68030 socket board that has a 5&1/4” drive bay so you can shove any old SATA CD, DVD or blu-ray drive into, an SD card slot or USB, and possibly be able to output HDMI so that it could have a 68k processor chucked in and make it able to be either the A1200CD for developers to use, or a standalone console that can be HDMI’d into a TV, play images from SD, CD, DVD, or Blu-Ray discs using any old USB game controller. I believe that this could be built by people smarter than me, using some custom ASICS, or FPGAs for the Akiko if it’s a small prototype run, for around $200us, sold for $500 and let the geeks have at it with the SATA drive bay. I hope I have made sense and someone important reads my wish list of features and finds a way to make it a reality...

Hey, at least you Commodore/Amiga fans got a lot more systems out the door even with Commodore on its deathbed than the Atari community did. We certainly didn't get the Falcon040 in the Microbox, the Jaguar 2, plus all of the other prototypes and games that never made it out the door. FFS, Paperboy for the 7800 was never released and the only copy is residing on an ST formatted disc in the attic of the programmer still to this day! So, it could be worse! :) Hell, we're still trying to unwrap the mystery behind what happened with the revolutionary AMY sound chip and the lawsuit between Atari Corp and Sight+Sound that kept it from being released plus all of the schematics and physically produced chips were destroyed in a warehouse fire...

This is a great bit of history, but I cannot see a value in recreating this drive. Nothing really used the Akiko, which meant it was trivial to run CD32 games on an A1200. A little bit of AmigaDOS knowledge and a CD32 gamepad was all you really needed. Despite how cool the CD1200 would have been, the market for it now would be a niche within a niche.

If the Commodore had launched Amiga CD1200 I had bought it and delayed the buy of a PC. When I saw Amiga CD32 first time in a shop I did not understand who was the target group. Amiga Commodore computer users would not buy the Amiga CD32 console. They were waiting for a CD-ROM drive and for good new games working on this CD-ROM. At a certain time there where no new games released for Amiga 500/600/1200/.... All people I knew where thinking to switch to PC because there where the new games with better graphics. People wanted to play games which make usage of CD-ROM technology because they contain better graphics and sound. Seeing this video looked like the game developers were occupied creating games for Amiga CD32 but they should invested their time making CD-ROM games for Amiga Commodore computers. Commodore should had tried to make PC Hardware workable on commodore computers because every piece of hardware became cheaper for PC. Commodore should had focus on the operating system and make it runable for x86 CPUs and earn their money with the OS.

Even allowing for this, it would still leave a thousand or two games to buy. Like you, I've always thought that a mini-CD32, or even an A1200, is a real must for gamers that love classic computers. It has to happen eventually....I hope!

@@Turrican60 To bring those games to a mini cd32 would be a nightmare regarding copyrights. Just to have the console would be enough for me. And an usb connection to upload the ADF. :)

This was in a Retro Computer Museum? Whey would they not clean up the drive? It looks like it's just been pulled from someone's dirty, old attic. One would think that someone at the museum could clean the outer case of this very rare piece of hardware. It still amazes me how a company such as Commodore, could end up being controlled by such incompetence ...and they had so many loyal customers and fans back in the day.

I'd pay £200 for a working CD1200 for my A1200 (that works with CD32 games). Just a thought, maybe a Raspberry Pi could be used instead, with an Akiko emulator on it?

The feel of the Amiga was so different from Windows. The multitasking was much better and the OS was more efficient on memory and CPU management. Commodores miss steppings killed a masterpiece.

Am I missing something? I have a third party cd rom that plugs into the pc slot and plays cd32 disks, how is this better/different?

How about around £50-100 for a bridge adapter that hooks up an IDE CD-ROM, supplies all the chips for the CD32 (chunky-planar ...) and connects it to the A1200 through some kind of a port?

But if the guy knew its value who found it, why was it stuffed in the back hidden in storage? I call B/S. Guess he wants to claim it now, fair enough. Glad its out there regardless! Great Vid Dan!

looking at that first media report you briefly showed what a shame Samsung didnt take Amiga on, imagine what a different world it wouldhave been for us Amiga fans. I still say to this day Commodore got it all wrong with the 600/1200, they should have been mini desktop machines with expansion/drive bays and a seperate keyboard and the 600 should have had the 020 and the 1200 the 030 minimum

Hypothetically, yes, I would want this. As for how much I'd pay: too much, and my wife would not be happy with me if she found out, as she certainly would. I'd also back a kickstarter to build a time machine to go back and ensure that David gained control of Commodore after the bankruptcy.
@TheFusedplug

Agreed ! David would have put both the Cd32 and 1200 right at the top the best was yet to come as the AGA chipset hadn't been properly realised for it's sheer power we were still getting spruced up ports of OCS and ECS games at the time

I bought a CD add on for my A1200 from a commodore shop in St Albans. Myself and my brother poo,Ed our money to buy it as we real wanted to play super stardust. The drive connected to my a1200 but I cannot remember the model the device was. I still have the game n the loft but after a flood the a1200 and drive were stolen. Any idea what the cd drive could have been? It was the same colour as the A1200.

it would not be difficult to disassemble it and build a copy, so get someone who knows what they are doing and build a copy so you dont risk the original, it will also allow you to understand it's complete capabilities

Just another 4am thought...a kickstart pack that included a (much) improved CD32 joypad in matching colour would be the dream...same layout for authenticity but change the dpad?

The competition pro pad is the one you want to pair with the CD32. That was great.

It needs a LCD screen with an arduino inside the joypad for mouse emulation via a gravis compatible analogue driven thumbstick and an LCD screen.

Get an adapter going to use the Jaguar ProControllers instead and patch the games. There's going to be a new production run of them for eager Atari Jaguar, STe, and Falcon030 owners, not to mention Atari 5200, Colecovision, and Intellivision fans eager to convert them for use with their consoles too. Six Fire Buttons, 2 shoulder buttons, and a numeric keypad to boot...
