Great video.....I always recommend your channel to my students and colleagues because you make superb vids. I teach aftereffects at a media training company and have recently ditched the explanation of the internal renderer and focus on media encoder (I would teach both...but I have not enough time to fully cover both) Also the cineform codec seems to be a good alternative for a QuickTime...what do you think about this one?...there is also the avid codec which would be the pc equivalent of Apple pro res. It may be worth making the distinction between pc and Mac E.g. no pro res on a pc Also A lot of my students have different jobs e.g. graphic designers to editors. So sometimes I cover different approaches.... ...like what the point of a png sequence is and who may use it. And how useful and fast it is for fixing problems ...How to make a decent .gif animation (which is not obvious at all and even media encoder is not useful for this super popular format) What do you think?

Hello. My problem is that when I want to export a project from Ae, when I play the result, there isn't anything else but a black screen, but the audio does sound. Also when I use Dynamic Link, importing a Ae project to Pr, happens the same, no video, only audio. What might the problem be? Sorry if my English is not good. Thanks

Thank you so much! Using "Media Encoder CC 2018" to Export on a new work MAC, and things just didn't look/ appear the same. Funny thing, the simple fix was to make sure I'm under the (Queue tab - and not the - Watch Folder) hahah. But thanks for your time, this guided me to the end result :)

Hi, have you tried increasing the quality / bitrate of the export? Also, you could try QuickTime MOV format to see if that makes a difference :)

@@SurfacedStudio unfortunately increasing the bitrate will not help :-(. i just made a quick test. In lower versions of AE you could activate a checkbox in the rendersettings something like "output module -> color management -> keep RGB". The result was bright & well saturated colors in your animation. I can´t find anything like that in the media-encoder settings. Is there a way to do it in Media Encoder? I really need the H.264 compression, so anaother format will be no solution :-(

no one has ever covered this but every time I render something in ae, it just renders as a black screen but the preview is fine and I can see everything, there's nothing wrong with my render settings, I have even used the default render setting yet it's still not working. I even uninstalled it and reinstalled but am still getting this problem. any advice? I tried deleting the cache too but that didn't help.

That Media Encoder saved the day! I couldn't open in Quicktime the exported AE .mov file (and was 5GB for a 55 second promo! down to 65MB via Encoder output) Thanks sir!

hi,nice video,very helpfull.i ended up here cuz i ,,mannaged'' to make a 96 mins video,with an audio spectrum and a trasparent picture added on to arrive to 110 GB weight,and after 11hours it turned out that the frame rate is deff slower than the original videoeven if the vid is intact as lenght and the audio is high quality,that happened via after effects rendering and media encoder,sglightly diff sizes,still both huge,both frame rate lower...trying your settings now,hopefully i mannage to do it right,cuz it feels bad i did 3 vids already same addings on AWE,and they came out right,then smtg changed,prob i choosed the wrong codec...btw,how long should a 90 mins video,with an audio spectrum and a trasparent picture added on it as baner,should take to render in Media Encoder?i'm kinda at 1:7 rate rendering atm..

Haha, never tried to render anything from After Effects that was even remotely that long! Can't say I have an 'average' as it all depends on the complexity of your composition and the specs of your computer - so unfortunately I can't really give you a 'should' on how long an export time to expect. All I can say that lower quality output settings will generally render faster or lowering the amount of effects you have in your composition as all of that will add to compute requirements and thus rendering time.

Hi there, can you help me out regarding this after effect. I have 2020 after effect recently. I watched few videos and searched but couldn't fix the problem. Problem is i can't import any videos or greenscreen videos that i have into the program! I have downloaded quicktime for mp4 videos to work but nothing and did that many times and also when downloading youtube videos i convert them to Avi and i tried MOV so the program supports it but nothing! its frustrating. I just want to make mp4 or any video open in the program but getting the box saying: after effect error, could not read from source. please check the setting and try again. any easy steps to show me? appreciate it.

Do the files play back fine on your computer? If not, then it's a driver/graphics/codec issues with your computer. If the files play back fine there might be something wrong with your AE - in which case you will have to reach out to Adobe unfortunately

Export as QuickTime format (mov) and select something like Apple ProRes 444 with alpha :) Big file size though

I have this problem where I exported the video to Encoder. After selecting the output, I click the green triangle. After 20-30 seconds, it just fails immediately. I tried asking my friend who does video editing usually. He said he never came up with that issue before. I tried restarting, exporting and rendering. Still fails after several tries.

You will have to look at the actual error that Media Encoder gives you and try to figure out what's at that point in your video. Other than that you'll have to reach out to the Adobe support unfortunately

Thanks a lot for the video, I was searching for a way to reduce the huge filesizes I got. I have one question though: I rendered some particle effects and put them in a Premiere project that I rendered again in H.264 and the particles look really really bad. Jordan Duncan It’s because you probally did ctrl- d and that makes a duplicate which makes it weird like bass booted and just click on the duplicate and press ctrl-z

i'm having so many problems with media encoder and often my projects don't turn up in ME when i try to render them. i've even tried to do it manually by clicking "render in ae" and then "queue in ME" but even when it does turn up all it comes up with is "could not read from source. please check the settings and try again" other times it's because the "dynamic link" isn't working. i can't seem to get it work and i'm so frustrated because when i render my projects on AE itself i lose quality. I really want to understand why i can't get media encoder to work but I have noticed a trend of it being less likely to work if the composition has a lot of plugins. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it but i just can't figure out how to get to the bottom of it.

Do you have matching versions installed for Premiere, After Effects and AME abs are you on the latest versions? You could also try clearing your cache files and make sure your graphics card drivers are up to date

Thank you for this but i still have a big problem... So I recently finished my first edit and now I want to render it. I really don’t know if the problem is because of my PC but whenever I try to render my edit it always gets stuck at the second transition (which is basically the same as the first one) and about like three or five seconds my PC goes into a black screen. Then again it shows the after effects screen but instead of the preview there is a blank screen and I don’t know how but suddenly I can find a MOV File on my PC with the same name as my comp Which can‘t be opened with any program. Also I can’t change it to a mp4 file... This have been my 23th try and I also did it with the Adobe media encoder but there was the same problem... Nothing works, i am very disappointed about that Hope u can answer

Hi, unfortunately that sounds like a technical issue and you may have to contact Adobe technical support to help you out. Make sure your computer meets the requirements of After Effects and you could try upgrading your graphics card drivers. Other than that, try deleting those 'transitions' (however you set them up) in your project and try to render that out. You may have to delete different elements to see which one is causing the issue. Could be a particular file you're using or a particular effect you have applied. All the best!

What do you mean with reach '3,98Go' ? Also, what exactly does the error say when you click on it - the message might give you some hints towards what might be going wrong. Does the file play properly on your computer?

Very useful! Thanks. Just one question, when I work EXR files with an alpha channel, specifically an animation obtained from 3dmax (Just trees and a blue sky)... I can see the sky In After Effects but when I open adobe media encorer, the alpha channel dissapear and turns into a solid black. How can I fix that? Thank you.

Yeah, I dont understand why the 264 isnt supported for quicktime anymore as well... :/ But I always render my clips in Quicktime and convert it in Handbrake but with optimized settings for quality/file size and it tunrs out oretty well and very good compressed

Took approximately the same time. The JPEG2000 and the H264 out of AME are quicker though than the QuickTime Animation codec

@@SurfacedStudio that’s what I thought too, but I have tried lowering the quality and resolution but the same thing still happens. Something that I have noticed though is that the slowed video has the same time span as it does in after effects, which is strange because shouldn’t it be significantly longer after being slowed down? And also in after effects my video exactly is 21 seconds long but when I time it on my phone the video stops at 10 seconds? So maybe I have tampered with some settings and now the video is stretching out to fit the 21 second time span? I’m so stuck idk what to do

I have needed to use Photo Jpeg quicktime codec for my professional work for giant billboard displays and now I have no idea what I should use. Their systems are old and need those formats. I guess I just have to have the older version of After Effects install specifically for those projects.

Surfaced Studio If You Want To INSTALL H264 and the rest of the codecs found in the quicktime, then just after downloading the quicktime you can use winrar and extract the files from quicktime and you will get "APPLE APPLICATION SUPPORT" RUN AND INSTALL IT. Close after effects and then start it again. You will see the codecs have already been installed and you will be good to Go.

Try clearing your cache, restarting your computer and updating your graphics card. Other than that it could be a particular effect in your Composition that's causing it so you may have to try disabling some of them to see which one is tripping up the export

Hi, Hoope your still here... when I select 'add to render queue' and then select "output" as normal., I keep getting a warning message... " cannot output to this format because it is. not currently installed" I installed the new Catalina Mac software and I recon its this because there's a new version of Quicktime comes with it and I don't see it in the after effects format options... I tried to install an older version of QuickTime and not joy!... I'm wondering if its even possible now to go back to the older Mac software ???

Does it work in any other video player? You may be looping your video and if you only exported a second or so it'll just loop like crazy

@@SurfacedStudio No other player is able to run the file and it loops crazy. VLC is the only player that is responding to the video. The VLC window keeps turning on and off continuously until its closed.

How long is the video file? Might have gotten corrupted on export or you exported a < 1s video by accident

h.264 was the best thing we could imagine. When apple and ae are not supporting it, other programs will follow, even pp and media encoder. What is the solution in the future for small size with good quality? O_o

They're old, low quality codec and Apple no longer supports them, hence Adobe is removing them

Yasmine Kamel hii i did manage to fix it, the only thing is that you have to render on adobe media encoder, it works 10x better in my opinion and there should be any rendering problems. search up tutorials on how to render with it

@@SurfacedStudio I figured it out. My external hard drive is formatted to exFat which isn't fully supported with apple which means that the quicktime videos will not work properly.

Whenever I use media encoder and use H.264 the visual quality is really bad even though it looks fine when I watch it in after effects, I tried using JPEG 2000 MXF but it wouldn’t let me watch it when it had saved, I’m really stuck on what to do because what’s the point of having after effects if I can’t save what I make but if I cancel it I will get a £70 cancellation fine, please help

Surfaced Studio I use hq setting, I’ve used all different settings but the outcome is always the same, I’m not sure if I’m just still doing something wrong or if there is actually something wrong with my software but it never works it always looks bad

What is your target bitrate? It seems unlikely that changing that wouldn't have a noticeable impact on your video. Might be a silly question, but you are sure you are viewing the correctly exported file?

im doing some chroma stuff, when i export in 1080 everything renders ok, but when i go for 4k or above the chroma doesnt disappear, the flipped image appears both flipped and unflipped... i recorded the video on 6k, why is this?

hi! i have a looping problem where it will play only the beginning of my video (3 seconds) and then loop back to the beginning! im somewhat new to the program as well as computer related things, so any advice or help would be appreciated

It sounds like your computer can't (or hasn't) cached more than 3 seconds and thus it's playing them on repeat. Great information for newcomers and hobbyists who struggle with exporting projects. 05:36 HEVC(H.265) is newer and has better compression than H.264 (like there will be a difference of >200MiB on 4K render, or it was in my case), however, there "might" be some issues with the online support of this encoding, probably with KZbin, although I have not verified it rigorously and a citation or practical verification might be required. :) Interesting... :P

what i normally use is a DNxHD/ DNxHR codec then put it through handbrake but its not working anymore

I followed a tutorial on KZbin to create a sequence but when I exported to .mov, Quicktime give me an error saying that the file is not compatible with QuickTime. Any idea what I am doing wrong? I'm new to Adobe After Effects, so any help would be very much appreciated!

You may have to look at the error log and see what is happening at that time in your composition. Also make sure you clear your cache

This is what it said although i made sure to close all applications using a lot of memory in task manager and it still failed. Although this time not showing any error messages.

For these sort of technical issues you may have to contact Adobe or search the Interwebs for that error code unfortunately. You can also try exporting your video without the effects you have on it to see which one is causing the issue

Depends a lot on the export settings but also the effects you added in AE and how big the files are and your computer hardware. What happens when you try to export only the video with small resolution and no effects?

hi , help me with this plz my ae project is finished and now i cant render it when i use render it gives me 53gb file but my project is 5 minute's also all the files used in it is less than 5gb so why it wont let me render it and even when it start's to render it get stuck in 18 or 29 sec when i change the quality on third ; when i decreased the composition time to 1 minute it rendered one 11gb file successfully but its still a problem that it cant render whole the project and the size of the render is the bigger issue tnx

What video codec are you using? Try using H264 or another lossy format. If you're using AVI your file will be HUGE!

Try clearing all of your cache files - sometimes it just needs a little kick. Also make sure all of your graphics card drivers are up to date

Have you downloaded and installed Quicktime? If you can't even play it back, it's unlikely that you'll be able to export it as your computer may not understand the codec to begin with
