I have spent a lot of time playing with newer players, and there is one mistake I see players make all the time. This is something you won't see professionals do, and certainly not the best in any sport. Whether it's F1 drivers taking a corner, NBA players going for that 3-point shot, or MLB catchers trying to throw someone out....they have commitment. Today I want to discuss committing to the shot and how this simple mindset change can be huge for unlocking your game. What exactly does committing to the shot entail?? You'll have to watch to find out!!
Have you heard of the Birdie Fam? It's a community of disc golfers who are striving to excel and improve together. Robbie. Long time fan. This comes from the deepest most loving and encouraging part of my soul. This is not rip of any kind of coming from a place of negativity. I think around 12:30-13:45 is the perfect video length i with most people I watch the videos with we kinda get lost in conversation in our group among the internal dialogue. But I bet if you’d try that for a month you would see at least 300 to maybe 450ish new subscribers! Good luck buddy I hope you at least entertain this idea. I know the longer videos are your style but it’s just the times man. Idk if I agree with it or im for it but the stats show a high retention rating for shorter videos. Peace and Love Maine 🤙🤙

One of the things I learned from ball golf that I took with me into disc golf is to always accelerate through the shot. So on a 50% power shot, you don't just try to swing easier, and you definitely don't take a full backswing and slow down, you'll be hella inconsistent. You take a shorter backswing and accelerate through like normal. These half-swings and 3/4 swings take practice. Accelerating through is especially important with putting. I think that's what commiting to a shot is.

What I found helpful to commit to a shot, is that someone picks a disc for you. It is a friendly round that a friend says, now you pick this disc and throw it like this. It is their line, and usually they tend to present this as a "right" answer. So I would listen to that and throw exactly how they would. It is not my mistake if the line is wrong as long as I commit. It teaches you commitment even if you throw the wrong shot. But in all honestly, committing is one of the hardest things in disc golf. Or generally in life. If you don't succeed in the first try, don't beat yourself up about it.

While you did say you can choose the fob of your choice on the Flightowel, you can choose a specific fob from the ones available. That is what makes FlighTowel so awesome....the use actual discs and cut them to make the fobs. Let's say you love throwing a Star Sidewinder....yep, they have fobs made from Star Sidewinders. Not all discs and plastics are available as fobs...but they do have awesome selections. I have three of them...one I bought and two I've gotten in Player's Packs. I keep one in my bag, one I use at home, and one is just saved (the fob is from a dyed disc).

I love the mental tips Robbie offers. I really haven't found much else out there on it. My driving form is largely based off overthrow disc golf's but I do look other places for cues when Josh's cues aren't working for me. I truly love these. Frankly Robbie teaches me I need to run things harder. Statistically I most commonly am short on my putts, I just don't get the power I think I'm going to on them. So I'm regularly drilling just putting excessively hard to show myself even if I miss the putt, I still am making the comeback, so it's the same as if I had just laid up, so I might as well give it enough power to give it a chance on the first putt and make the second if I miss the first. It's a huge issue for me but I'm working on it

Wow, that first basket looks downhill, but you are there, so it's an illusion from my perspective. It would have fooled me. I also had a lady who get me interested in the sport, tell me to not touch any disc for the first two months except my putter. I learned that bad boy up and down. I have expanded that repertoire but only to 3 discs, and it's going on one tear. I birdie frequent;y and beat others who have played much longer. One day maybe in 6 months, I'll add a distance driver. I haven't even touched one of those yet, and an interested in how they fly, but I don't see how my scores will improve, so it'll just be a once in a blue moon disc. You do a great job teaching. Thank you I also went to the flight towel place to see what they have, but it didn't recognize the page so I thought they may not be supporting you anymore. I left, but wanted you to know if it's a mistake.

When Instarted playing an OG told me that commitment to the shot was paramount. It doesn't matter if it's right or wrong just commit and make the shot. Game IQ rises the more you play and learn your discs. One thjng Ive noticed in recent years is pros walking onto the tee box with multiple discs in their hand. To me thats weird because in my opinion, and what I was taught, commitment is a foundational element of the game of golf.

I like everything you said.... Up until the point where you said...'believe in yourself' it's easy enough to get cocky, but harder to commit. That's my take....

How does one approach getting a PDGA number? When should we get one? What are the advantages and disadvantages to having one?

My best round was after a practice round where i let my overthinking run wild and build a plan. Second round i played straight and stuck to the plan. Didn't look at my score, didn't look back after a missed putt, just kept moving forward. Played a well later and had one of my worst rounds in a long time lol. But even then I'm reminding myself that a year ago i would have LOVED that worse score. Little steps forward make great progress over time.

As someone who plays a very forehand friendly course, and can't trust a forehand for the life of me. It's always a backhand, preferably a hyzer flip. Got to remember par is good. Also some of the forehand holes are insanely out of range for me so I just throw something straight and attack the pin after.

I thought I had an issue with committing to my shot. And while that does happen, my main issue is that I don't let the disc do what it is designed to do. I'm on the tee pad, 250 feet slight dogleg to the right. Perfect for my MVP Resistor (6.5/4/0/3) thrown forehand. All I have to do is throw it flat and it will go right. But, nope, when I release the disc it will most likely be released on a hyzer and maybe a big hyzer. I've committed to throwing the disc on a certain line and a certain way....but then I "help" the disc and that is when things go bad.

its tough to gauge which disc was most appropriate because you only get one 1st and one 3rd shot, and your muscle memory/adjustments make a huge difference. there's a reason you only get 1 shot when you're playing for real :). Maybe you're good enough to throw the exact same way and never consider adjusting based on how the 1st throw went... im certainly not.

I'd be so bold to say that it's not only committing to the shot, but being confident in the shot. You can commit without confidence and that's where you lose control. 2 sides of the same coin really.

One issue with your comments on hole 1. You talk about the Sting being the better option as it was closer, BUT you have to remember that you were more warmed up by that shot. The location of the discs might have been different if you threw them in a different order. What if the Sting was thrown first with no warm up, followed by the Hex, and lastly the Dune? Maybe the Dune would have been parked.
@clintsawyer7702
@clintsawyer7702 9 ай бұрын
But that actually exactly what he said... That even though at first the sting might look like the better shot because it is closer, but if properly warmed up and a full rip, it would very likely go and being a bad area, where are the dune he thinks would actually be the play even though it was the farthest away, and he specifically said that was likely because it was his first throw, and likely would go farther when warmed up.

bring a single disc to the box might be the best advice. I cringe when I see people bring up 4 options, If you don't know the shot, you wont throw the shot
