Common boiler feed system mistakes

In this video, I describe some of the common issues I see when looking at the boiler feed unit. I discuss the need for a strainer, the importance of the tank vent and the overflow, what master traps are a bad idea, and the proper discharge piping components.

Excellent video, hugely informative. Two questions, why the use of two check valves, in case one fails I would think? Also, if the boilers goes into vacuum, there isn't really anything to be done, as it will flood, or can a vacuum breaker be put on the boiler?

Thanks for the feedback Rite boiler recommends it I think a single check valve should work I do use vacuum breakers on steam boilers

On all our large boilers we use 3/4” brass traps with a swing check installed backwards above the water column assembly

@@boilerroomdetective it does not. The little bit of condensate in the brass trap keeps the swing check pushed closed when under pressure. I’ve used Hoffman #26s in the past and they usually bite the dust after a few years especially in an application that has an automated steam valve on steam supply causing the boiler to go into vacuum frequently.

Is it accurate to say proper boiler chemicals will neutralize and eliminate carbonic acid and pitting?

You would have to ask a water treatment expert but if the boiler is running properly the chemicals don’t leave the boiler
