Bream spawning time in one of the lakes of Latvia, at the end of May, at a water t +18C. In the spring on the grassy and shallow lake shores, when the water temperature is warm enough for the development of eggs, you can often hear and observe how the breams splash water around their spawning grounds. Their backs appear above the water from time to time. But what's going on underwater at this moment? During spawning the fish stop eating and gives all the stored energy to the most intimate process of the year. During this time males develop white spawning tubercles on their heads and scales and begin to gather very actively. Each male tries to take the best and most suitable place on the waterfront to wait for the female to arrive. The competition is fierce and males who are unsuccessful are constantly being beaten by others. Males that have not yet occupied or due to competition are unable to occupy their territory is gathering around the territories of other more successful males, waiting for opportunity. The video mostly shows males fighting for already used places, which they are trying to use again but unsuccessfully. During this time the fish are so careless and busy with the realization of love fantasies that they become an easy target for many birds, four-legged land carnivores and two-legged poachers.
