Fascinating, and nice conclusion, it would seem making a profit out of the homeless is nothing new.

Would it be disputed that Kirkgate is the oldest part of Leeds? Maurice Beresford suggests that Briggate is the Leeds New Town that has been tagged on to the earlier manor, viz Kirkgate which accounts for the location of the Parish Church.

I agree that Kirkgate is the oldest part of Leeds. Briggate came later and was laid out in an organised way.

There is a video on KZbin featuring Professor Joyce Hill that confirms that Kirkgate is the oldest part of Leeds. She shows that Leeds was mentioned in the Domesday Book 1086 and valued at £7. At that time it was a handful of houses adjacent to the church situated on Kirkgate. The church is not the original, it was altered, extended and eventually completely rebuilt on the original site.

I used to think that the expression "I could sleep on a clothes line" was pure hyperbole until I saw a Charlie Chaplin film showing him sleeping on a line in an American doss house. There is an old music hall song that records this bottom of the range sleeping arrangement and George Orwell reported in 1933 that there was a doss house in London called the Twopenny Hangover where the customers sat on a bench and draped themselves over a rope to sleep. Hard times.

Thanks Lex. I have read similar stories. Some people had very hard lives.

These houses were a godsend in those days... But how sad families had to go into them... My mother told me about the conditions.. Not good..

You are correct once again Maureen. I try to keep a fair balance as I make these. For many people they were the best option available.

@@GeogJuice they had no option at all, so sad. My mother was there... So I know the truth what happened.... So please you have totally thought truth...
