Growing up in Inverness at the time we all remember the Klondikers coming into town to buy their washing machines etc. Basically things they couldn't get back home. You used to see them heading through town carrying ludicrous sized boxes!

So, I tried to research the situation today and see if the Makerel is still alive or has been overfished completely...all I could find: Scientists Rate it as “not overfished” and “110% bio-mass availability” >> what happened? Did the makerel go out of style in the 90s and could recover?

I think the 'over fishing' idea was a tactic to try to prevent the EU from plundering the 'seemingly endless supply' of fish. A tactic that did not work. Ultimately the 70% trawled by foreigners in UK waters doubled, and probably much more, as was said in the documentary the EU fishermen 'do as they please' where as the British are harshly policed, all in order to preserve 'EU unity', with the forlorn hope that EU fishermen would have a sense of fairness and honour.

@@jk28416 Yes you are correct, also it always seems to be the small fisherman that looses out, now that we are supposedly out of the CFP our own MMO and DEFRA seem to be hell bent on destroying whats left of the small boat fishing industry here too. Take for instance the grant scheme to improve the fleet, if you don't have the money to have the improvements done and then claim the money back off the scheme you have no way forwards

When the mackerel come in you can still pull them up of a pier 6 hooks full all the way!
