Great video once again, man...! I unfortunately had an incident just this last weekend where I had to call a fault on someone, and I REALLY don't like doing that, I typically give the benefit of the doubt and especially try to let things slide in recreational play. The case was, me and my partner (4.0 players) were playing two female 4.5 players in a morning rec. match. Well, my partner accidentally popped up the ball, and the same lady slammed the ball back at him twice. That's when I knew I wouldn't be receiving the ball soon, and looked at her foot positioning to check if everything was legal. Her foot was well over the line, and I would've let it slide had she not done the same thing twice, and then proceeded to bury herself even further in the kitchen to slam one at my partner's body. At that point, you deserve to know you were doing something illegal. She slammed one more illegal overhead and I called "Kitchen Fault--look at your feet" (I know the correct term is technically "Foot Fault," but I was in the moment and forgot). She immediately jumped back behind the line and said the most forced "Whaaat...?" I had ever heard. I politely said "You were hitting your overheads like this" and demonstrated how her foot was over the line and she was leaning into her shots, putting herself more and more into the kitchen. She deliberately slap-shotted the ball back at my father for the change-of-serve, and cursed at me while walking back. She also targeted me, trying to hit drives and hard volleys at me even when in a bad position to. I either returned a volley, reset the point, or let it fly a mile out-of-bounds. After the game was over, she refused to say "good game" and just walked away. I'm not saying this to hero-ize myself. I didn't like doing it and don't know if I'd do the same thing if I went back in time, but please remember the rule of "Benefit of doubt goes to the opponent" and if you do something wrong, just move on. If someone was deliberately calling lies, there would be a trend and they'd get reported or called-out. In my case, there were four people watching who, when she walked away and cursed after I called the fault, said "I mean, it was a foot fault." If you ever play a match against me, recreational or competitive, please call me out on anything. I'd rather realize "now" then when it'd seriously matter.

Seems to me that sort of BS should have a penalty associated with it. Yellow Card, Technical foul, unnecessary roughness, all are major sports that have standards. I started playing Pickleball a couple of years ago recreationally. Hurt my back, and am just getting started again. So I’ve been watching some high level matches on YT and it seems that there isn’t much sportsmanship between teams. Just a perfunctory paddle tap many times. don’t know if this is a Pickleball thing. (Sorry, not sorry?) or just from the few games I’ve seen. You can play a tough competitive game and leave it on the court and appreciate your opponent.. i mean, in the NFL they kick the living shit out of each other and hug after the game. Sportsmanship. @@PickleballKitchen Clarification on the serving rule, please? I was under the impression that you cannot "TOSS" the ball to serve; you must simply let it "drop" from your hand. With the recent rule allowing you to hit your serve on the bounce, I was again taught that you cannot "throw/bounce" the ball to the ground, you can only "let it drop" from your hand. Similar to table tennis, the rule prohibits you from imparting spin or force with your hand. Thanks in advance for the answer.

@Ken Baxter and as a Director of Tennis of 30+ years who has witnessed first hand the biggest mistake players make before they have stepped on the court is STOP WEARING RUNNING SHOES! One, running shoes mark up the courts(black skid marks). Two, running shoes do not support lateral movement (the outers are a soft canvas material). Running shows are made for straight ahead running. Tennis or Pickleball shoes are low-profile, non-marking, and provide much better support for lateral movement which pretty much defines pickleball. People need to be educated on this prior to stepping on court. I have seen many a player role their ankle when leaning to one side and this may have been preventable. Be smart! Happy Pickling!

I have a question regarding the server position during a doubles game. Let’s say the score is 3 2 2 and team B faults and the server returns to Team A. Score is now 2 3 1. Which side does Team A Server 1 serve from? Left or right side? Is it based on an odd or even score that determines which side Sever 1 serves from?
@davidfremont-smith3319 Жыл бұрын
I had this same question, but I think I have the answer (but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). The server position in doubles after a side out will always be on the right (even) side, regardless of the score. Whichever player on the receiving team happens to be on the right side at the time of the side out, that player is now server #1 and will serve from the right side. Say Joe is that person (server #1), then serves from the right side and commits a fault. Sue, his partner (server #2), would then start her first serve from the left side. If the point is won, Sue and Jim will switch sides, and Sue will serve from the right side. If they lose that point, there is a side out, and the other team serves. But Sue and Jim will stay in the same positions as they were when they lost the point. After the next side out, and the serve comes back to them, now Sue is server #1 and will serve from the right side. (So your server number may well change several times during a game.) My understanding is that singles is where the server's score determines their serving position after a side out: even score from the right, and odd from the left.

Seems the racquetball I loved to play as a kid has gone the way of the once-popular ski jumping in Washington state. My girlfriend's interested in pickleball from its description-and currently on the bus moving here-so I ordered a pair of paddles learning Battle Point Park has several free courts. The future part of the kitchen rule is interesting. You legally volley a winner and the ball bounces twice on the other side, point over. Now you lose your balance and step into the kitchen. That's a kitchen violation and point to the other side, or side out. Strange rule. In tennis, once the ball bounces twice on their side, the point is truely over.

Something similar happened in volleyball to make it a quicker game and more fun was to change the rules so that every serve, no matter which team served, was a point. This isn’t the kind of rule that’s written, but see if you agree with me. When I’m receiving serve and the ball is close to the center line or the sideline, I’m looking approximately “down the line” and I should make the call of in or out. My partner has an inferior view and should stay silent. Conversely, if the ball is close to the kitchen line, my partner has the superior view and should make the call. If the ball is close to the baseline, neither of us has a “down the line” view, but I should make the call because I’m closer. To take it further - on any shot, if a partner is looking “down the line” in question, that partner should make the call. Otherwise, the partner closest to the ball should call it.

I need help with this rule...The moment the ball is served...4.A.4.c. Neither of the server’s feet may touch outside the imaginary extensions of the sideline or centerline. WHEN? Is it at the moment server strikes the ball or when service motion starts? (like in tennis) Sometime server start the service motion with one foot crossing side or center line, but at the time of striking the ball both feet get within the lines. In tennis if one foot crosses the line during the motion of the serve and then that same foot is brought in the legal position during the strike of the ball it is still called foot fault. Also if the serving motion is in question then even baseline should be included in the definition. (sideline, centerline and baseline) If rule is talking about moment of striking the ball then server can step inside the court (straddle the line), toss the ball up, lift the front foot up at the moment of striking the ball and keep playing… Current rule: 4.A.4.a At least one foot must be on the playing surface behind the baseline.

Hi, you just touched on this but didn't get specific or maybe being general was enough: 4.A.9.If the serve clears the net or hits the net and then touches the receiver or the receiver’s partner, it is a point for the serving team. I don't understand the sanity behind this rule at all especially if the ball hits the net.
@PickleballKitchen4 жыл бұрын
The reason why they have this rule is because you won't know where the ball could have bounced if it hit someone. The serving team has to have the benefit of the doubt.
@Bozzy_Wazzy4 жыл бұрын
It’s the same way in tennis, you have to let the serve hit the ground before contact. If playing doubles, only the designated returner may touch the serve after it bounces and the designated server must change each point. Hope that helps you out!
@1105pitbull4 жыл бұрын
@@Bozzy_Wazzy That's why the rule in pickleball is so weird. I would think if the ball hits the non returning player that it's obvious that the serve would not have made it into the service area. In tennis it's not this way. If the server hits the non receiving player then the fault is the servers.

Ok here is a situation that occurred in a game I was playing in recently. The opposing team players each tried to hit a ball that had bounced between them. Their paddles collided and one paddle dropped into the kitchen. Their shot went in the net so they lost the point however what if it had went over the net and landed in play. Would the paddle dropped in the kitchen been a fault even though it was a result of a ground stroke and not a volley? I have scoured the USAPA rule book and it really does not address this. Obviously a joke lost on “pickleball kitchen”. No one could produce that much spin and bounce to do that. It can be done in Table Tennis as a fun demonstration on how much spin can be applied to modern day table tennis ball with modern day equipment and professionals but would not work in real game as opponent would always be able to return ball before it returned on its own anyway.

Are there any rules about changing players after a match? For example, say a group of 12 players are playing on 3 public courts. There are 3 people on sideline waiting to play after a game ends, can one set of 4 people that were playing together make a rule that the next person up to play the winners when the game ends, could not play on that court because the four of them want to keep playing together.

I doubt that kind of thing is within the realm of the rules of any sport, and probably falls within the rules of the institution that owns and governs the courts. For example, many private clubs have reservations for courts according to time slots. Other places have a "ladder" system during certain times of day. For places without any official policy or authority, that kind of thing probably comes down to human decency and the golden rule, haha.

I have a silly question that no one has reviewed yet. At least no video that I can find. I am new and we are wondering what happens when I serve in single play, the serve is good but my opponent is unable to return due to missing the ball or smashes it into the net or other. Is this a point for me? Do I simply re-serve? The rule book does not cover this or am I incorrect? Thanks!!!

Winning the point like this is not only a technical matter of fact, it should be the intention of any competitive player when serving. If your opponent fails to make contact at all, it's called an "ace" (just like tennis), and they legally owe you $5 or a beer (server's choice). I always wear a Nike sports bra under my shirt and knee pads so that I can rip off my shirt and skid on my knees after I ace my opponent. This is a great way to get in their head. Especially considering I'm a cisgender male.

I understand that if you hit a volley and your momentum carries you into the kitchen, that is a fault. What if i am playing back and I run up to hit a ball that bounces outside of the kitchen, and then my momentum carries my into the kitchen ....is this allowed?
@AMurderOfLobs2 жыл бұрын
Well considering it's not illegal to be standing in the kitchen when you hit a ball that has bounced, why would it suddenly become illegal to move into the kitchen after you hit a ball that's bounced? Remember, the kitchen is the non-volley zone. When it's not a volley, the kitchen is no longer relevant.
