Wild edibles are free and nutritious. Common Weeds And Wild Edibles Of The World is a how-to film about foraging. It will teach you how to safely and sustainably identify, harvest, and prepare some of the most common, most delicious wild-growing plants. I've traveled to 67 countries and have been able to find most of the greens discussed in this movie on the ground. Plants like lambs quarters, common mallow, dandelion, purslane, salsify, and many more. I hope this video helps you eat the weeds in your neighborhood.
And remember, don't eat something if you don't know what it is: • Don't Eat Something If...

Thank you, that was the best wild edible film I have watched. So clearly explained. I eat 80% wild edibles every day. I ended up being raw vegan after being vegetarian. I feel healthy, never hungry. I would like to plant more that used to grow here. The winter was so wet and still in June nothing has changed, alas I can find no trace of purslane every last bit has been eaten :( I would love to find somewhere that sells seeds. I am living in S.W. France.. Thank you again. Fran

Wow. This is amazing. I grew up eating and harvesting dandelions, love them. My mother cooked them with some vinegar in the water to give the bitterness a better flavor. I recognize a lot of these weeds, but never knew their names or that they are edible. The pineapple weed, we used to play with as a kid picking them and pretending they were a wild carrot and put them in weed salads, but never knew it could actually be eaten. You have opened my eyes to a whole new world. Thanks.

I made "Dandelion Coffee" several decades ago (the worst part was digging out the roots, even with the right tool), and was surprised at how much it tasted just like real coffee! Of course, it lacked the caffeine, but it _was_ absolutely _loaded_ with vitamins!

One of the best foraging videos on KZbin! Thank you so much! I've been foraging in my backyard and neighborhood for a while now. I come from a culture where that's what we did/still do for our greens (which we eat a lot of), no wonder we are so healthy! Amaranth 16:34 is a traditional veggie, which I harvest from my yard and a local park(where once one of the rangers gave me a whole story on how the Native Americans used this plant). I also use 17:48 Common Mallow, 19:52 Purslane, 21:52 Purslane and 24:31 Wild Lettuce, I use them in smoothies, as a cooked veggie (which I eat with our traditional ugali), and in salads. I also love eating Wood sorrel (which used to be our play vegetable as little kids-it has a nice lemony salty taste, we even used it's long fruits to mimic plantains and bananas😊). In fact it's funny, that I've become known as the lady who "eats her weeds"😊 I'm so pumped up with the benefits of eating my weeds I'm going to include them in my channel Zabeti's Adventures😊

Be careful. Wild foods especially have loads or dangerous fungal spores and parasitic eggs both on the surface and inside the plant itself. NEVER consume anything you pick from the forest! Not even when cooked. It's extremely dangerous. I've had multiple near death experiences and are now cronically ill from various deceases caused by parasites. Just be aware.

Excellent video. Very well done, with valuable information. I especially appreciate the close-ups as you're explaining the properties of each plant and what to look for. Am going to share the link for this with my vegan/raw-vegan Meetup groups. And -- not to be taken for granted -- thanks for speaking clearly with comprehensible diction and no mumbling! I didn't have to turn on the closed captioning to figure out what you were saying. Can't say that about videos and movies that have a budget that's thousands of times larger than one you had for this little gem. :-)

I don't believe in "Karma", or luck. I "cultivate" Amaranth in my yard. During late summer/fall, you can drive by my house, and see multiple "bushes", in my otherwise, neat lawn. This is the Amaranth I collect leaves, and seeds from. Amaranth seeds, make a nice, hearty bread. You also forgot to list Stinging Nettle.

Salsify- I have seen this plant categorized as part of the sunflower family and as part of the dandelion family. In my opinion it seems like dandelion is closer to the same family because of the "milky" sap. But aster is in it's scientific name. Can anyone help me understand these classifications?

You also make bad karma if you use knowledge passed down by generations and then publicate their findings in a book for which you have to kill trees. and than want to protect your collage of old knowledge with copyright in order to make personal profit out of it. Just share what you know without an ego.

Other than not really having the same taste in title music, I couldn't find any fault with this film. It was clearly explained, well delivered & concise & the time passed quickly. You even addressed the biggest fault on YT - that the www isn't just full of Americans & you addressed species that are common in many countries where the rest of us live. Especially for that, I thank you.

The cautions you state are important. Personally, I'm allergic to chamomile --makes my throat close up. So I personally would avoid Pineapple Weed, as it is related to chamomile. Also, there is a inedible poisonous lookalike to purslane: I think it's called spurge--when you break the stem, it has a milky sap. Purslane doesn't.

15 mins in. All good so far but I have to point out one flaw in your rules of thumb. If all of the plants you listed are in the mustard family, the smell test won't always work. I can assure you, cabbage, and kale do not smell like mustard by any stretch of the imagination. I'm hoping this isn't one of those videos where someone with unique taste buds tries to explain the flavour to the normies.

Thought it was cool until he went into evolution mode which totally disregards creations of GOD. Wild lettuce did not evolve into iceberg lettuce because it would no longer be wild lettuce...LOL. GOD created everything including us. I had an NDE so I know definitely everything God has said is true. Such as "Rejoice! For the day of our death is better than the day of our birth" it is true. If I know for a fact that is true then EVERYTHING God has told us is true too😀

Thank you! I really enjoyed this video… And loved being introduced to the place again. It would’ve been nice to know which are in the West Coast or East Coast or worldwide etc. For instance salsify is not something I can find here on the East Coast, correct? I have never seen it while foraging. Anyway, the only other comment I have is that I don’t think these greens need much dressing at all! Often I only sprinkle with lemon juice, vinegar, some yummy oil… And just leave that to be.

Sergei I have watched several of your videos ,I have highly recommended you to many of my friends that I’m encouraging to forage as an addition to diets and imperative to immune booster. You hurt my heart as I watched you prepare the salad. You wasted so many ,much of the truly amazing amounts of the precious parts of the salad and parts of the edibles,I’m not sure if you were on the clock or a hurry ,why did you waste so muc of the best edible amount of the plants .I realize non of us are perfect , but you hurt my heart my friend I can’t with good conscious send or share this video. That’s a shame for me as I’ve shared all of your other videos.I hope that this is not an example of where you are going in the future. GODBLESS you

Thanks, 2 questions: I see you thruway a lot , why not harvesting what you will actually use of a plant?is there a reason the nex one is: I use vinegar in the whater to rinse the veggies , as usually there are parasites , I see you did not do much of a wash any special reason for it? h…

Looks and sounds wonderful. Purslane covers my garden and lambs quarters are next. I have steamed them with beet tops.. Thanks for the work you have put into this movie.

There is only one fault I find with your video, you waste the Amaranth 😭I peel the skin off and cut up and saute leaf and stem it is very tasty you just have to make sure to harvest while it is tender 😋😋

In most of the harvests that I’ve seen you made, you killed the entire plant! What’s up with that? You should harvest some leaves here and there and leave most of the leaves intact for future growth. Also, you shouldn’t be wiping out an entire area of a plant because they won’t be able to come back in that area. Scatter your harvest from multiple locations and take a little bit from each area. This kind of ethical harvesting is what’s missing from most foragers.

If you pick all the flowers aren't you removing the potential seeds? This will then prevent the plant from reseeding itself

The buttons of common mallow are my favourite. Prefer them to the leaves. Lambs quarters my favourite wild edible.

So many of these are in my back yard in the apartment complex where I live but can’t be eaten because of all the fertilizer and pesticides they put on the grass. It should be illegal to destroy good food like this! Thanks for all the info!

Janice - loved this super video - was able to identify some of the herbs in my garden which I cut and feed to the chickens - have they been getting the best? Will leave a little patch for us I think. Today identified feverfew - which looks like camomile with a broader leaf that is medicinal.

Salsify is also known as 'oyster plant' due to the flavor of the roots. Pineapple weed is also medicinal used as a topical tea/scrub for skin ailments like eczema.

Wild Mustard goes very well with rabbit or venison. Even better if you can find wild asparagus.

Good warning not to eat too much of a plant till you know its ok for you. Avoid polluted areas. Seek plants near water and likely places. 5.0 min is the action. Excellent.
