Europe has been a battle concept for centuries: it often takes foreign enemies to weld the Europeans together. But for centuries, they had been mostly fighting against themselves. It was not until the Enlightenment and the French Revolution of 1789 that a new idea of Europe emerged based on common values: freedom, equality and fraternalism.

I thought so, too, before my home country attacked its closest neighbour on 24 February last year. Now, I feel really affiliated with the so-called lost generation, which was stripped of their illusions about the modern advanced and peaceful civilization.

@Henrik Rolfsen: of everything there was staged but there is no question this piece is a great learning experience comparable to only very few of what i have ever seen. that part where diderot delivered his piece super correctly in tone, attitude and righteous certainty reminded me of lenin and his comrades upending russia and liquidating the Czar and family while giving the world 70 or so years of communism USSR style. voltaires' vaunted wish of letting everyone think for themsevles and do accordingly did not worked out so well. why?

Two things. Actually, three. I'm enjoying this series, so thank you for posting it. But, how on earth does an Aussie end up with that accent? And it's exceptionally annoying that he keeps referring to England, when he means GB. For example - he talks about the industrial revolution starting in England and proceeds to talk about James Watt, who was very much a Scot. You'd think a docu series about Europe would be able to accurately describe the countries within it.

I'm an Aussie and know many others who have a similar accent to him. Other than the time he studied at Cambridge he could have picked it up from relatives who are British, wouldn't be that unlikely as a large majority of Aussies are second or third generation (like myself). Another factor is socio-economic status, or whether you grew up/live in a city or a regional or rural town. I agree, really enjoying this series! Watched the whole thing in a day...

Glad I'm not the only one. It really annoys me when people default to England when they mean the UK (or in historical context the Kingdom of Great Britain). I can just about forgive other languages but for an Aussie who lived in the UK it's pretty unforgivable.

Poland, which was one united and baptized country in X century (on the contrary to other disintegrated nations), being strong, independed and tolerant to all religions in XVI century, fighting with Turks and stopping them from invasion to Europe in 1683, having second in the world democratic constitution in 1791 is totally forgotten in this series...to be mentioned as appearing after Treaty of Versailles ? What a terrible mistake and ignorance!

And Second World War - showing opressors as victims!!?? This is ridiculous. 16 % of whole population died, being attacked without reason and almost shoved off from the face of the earth....it goes without mentioning? No picture of ruins of Warsaw and other cities? No polish surnames on the tombes? It was genocide to be remembered.

Actually, it did appear after the 123 years of partitions, so technically, that is not a mistake. Yet I agree that he could have added one sole syllable to put it more precisely: Poland REappeared after WW1.

"Communism exploded on the scene in the 20th century." that's a very generous way to put that. I would phrase it as the worst genocides man has ever committed...Look at the tone this series takes with capitalism compared to communism.
