@LibertyMonk Жыл бұрын
yeah, in addition to being a mouthful, it's overinclusive and imprecise IF you mean "performer/model". Content creation arguably also involves more than just artists, there's the whole business side from producers to platform programmers.

Model refers to someone that is only paid to be on camera talent. A creator can be the on camera talent, as well as the editor and producer and 100% owner of the condo that they are putting out but if they are specifically only the army camera talent than they are just a model.

To provide a man’s perspective on the whole “women tell me they’re huge fans and guys try and play it cool” phenomena, if I encounter a woman who I’m a fan of, I’m conscious of the fact that the vast majority of stalkers or “fans” who behave/think in dangerous ways towards female content creators are men. I enjoy telling them I’m a fan of their work, but I don’t want the thought to cross their mind that I’m going to follow them home or propose to them or something, so I do tend to minimize the amount of their time I take up, and the enthusiasm I show for them. As a former virtual sex worker, I really appreciated this video! AVN was an event a lot of my online peers went to that I was always curious about but never was committed enough to the job to make an effort/investment in going. One thing that I thought about was your observation on the demos of people who were there. Based on my experience the types of people you described (older couples, older single men, and to a lesser degree groups of men) all made sense to me based on my experience as a cam model. Couples and single men above like 25 were always the ones who formed a more genuine emotional connection to me, treated me the best, and so I can see them being the ones most invested in going to an in-person event to see the models they connect with online. I could also see groups of men rally around particular performers and finding community that way or just being fans of adult content. And/or they could be kinkster groups. The younger single men though, they always treated me as the most disposable, and just something to entertain them for a short time. Also the worst tippers ever, they don't actually want to support us they just want to get as much as possible with spending as little as possible. Literally had guys tip me pennies many times and tell me I should be so grateful for it. Those guys, I couldn't see shelling out money to go to an event like this except in some delusional way, like they think they'll pick up a bunch of models.
@manicpixiecremegirl Жыл бұрын
came here to say exactly this. i second everything, especially on the demographics. it's really sweet to assume it's an anxiety thing and guys trying to not be creepy, but that's exactly what they were doing-- being creepy. the young guys are the broke fuques who think THEY are doing YOU a favor by them paying any attention to you. the more conventionally attractive they are, the more aggressive that attitude seems to be, in my experience. they can't make connections with the models because they dont see them as people. which is why they rapid fired photos. theyre trying to get as much "content" for the least amount of emotional or financial investment as possible.

Even at regular cons, I can get super nervous if there's too many people at a booth and it suddenly feels like I'm in people's way, or I'm taking up too much of an artist's time, or whatever. All of that can only be compounded when it's sex work, because even if they personally have a positive outlook on sex work and sex workers, being publicly known by an adult content creator as a fan removes that anonymity and suddenly they know you and can make assumptions about you. It's a terror of being known, and it's more intense when you're dealing with a subject like the adult entertainment industry since we don't talk about it.

Even though our attendees are extremely knowledgeable and professional they still need to have things explained to them like they were six year olds. I really enjoy hearing your takes on big multi-day events.

As a fan when I meet famous people I try to approach them as any normal person. It's a little iffy, not knowing what name they prefer (first or mr/ms blank) cos YOU are familiar with them, but you're a stranger so that gets a little weird, but I'm also socially awkward in a way that tends to come off as charming so I just straight ask what they prefer and then quietly ask for what I want (pic/autograph) or just make small talk. I went to a Buffy convention and saw most of the stars at the show in the hotel elevator. Autographs were pay gated by the con, so I didn't ask that, but small talk and photos they were fine with and/or politely said no but chatted during the ride.

Amanda, the men don't want to seem that interested because they don't want to come off as creepy. No matter how much of a fan you are, being thought of as a creepy guy is devastating to self esteem.

Yeah this is one of the differences between the male experience and the female experience. A female being overly excited and freaking out and passionate/obsessed with a person is considered “fangirling” (girl is literally in the word) a male being overly excited and freaking out and obsessed with a person, especially a woman is considered creepy (especially if the male is unattractive). Yes there are rational reasons underpinning this, men tend to be stronger, more capable of violence, more likely to pursue stalkerish behavior, etc.. But most men learn from their own experience and watching people/women react to men who do act that way, to avoid coming off like that at all costs. Especially in today’s world we’re constantly told to avoid making women feel uncomfortable at all costs.

As a cam model and adult content creator, I feel the AVN expo could have been a lot better organized this year.. and would have definitely been better if it was hosted at its old spot: the hard Rock hotel.. I think the hard rock was all around a more suitable place to host the avns. I was happy I still attended but also feel that my vip tickets could have given me more benefits for paying "vip." I could relate to much of what you said in this video and I'd love to be on your podcast to discuss further details about my avn experience as a performer that wasn't directly at a booth and just attended. I think I'd have alot of helpful insight to share if you ever wanted ☺️ this was a fantastic video!
@vadalia3860 Жыл бұрын
I think the term "adult performer" is both accurate and specific. Adult content creator seems so broad that it could mean someone who creates adult comics or kink educational videos or these performers or any of a hundred other things.

I understand that "trying to act cool" when meeting someone you are a fan of as trying to not overwhelm the person with your... faness... I'm shy and wouldn't know what to do if someone came to me all excited so I also would try to have a chill interaction when approaching someone.

I didn’t even know what AVN stood for. I watch adult content occasionally (no shame in that, people, enjoy what you enjoy-within reason-and be free!) but wouldn’t know any of these stars by name or even by sight… And yet this seems interesting from that anthropological/sociological perspective. Truly THE place to people-watch (without judging), and hell, I know at least the models don’t mind being watched, lol! And hey! Shoutout to adult entertainers and sex workers, you rock! I know the state of some of these sites y’all use can be uncertain at times, the industry can be uncertain at times, you put up with a lot. So just… you guys are really cool, honestly.

Hi! :D I am a cam model so I can answer some of your questions :) 1) Most camming sites don't care while your streaming what music you play. I have no idea how they get around the copyright. 2) Models are camgirls/cam models - NSFW live streamers. The term model just sounds...better...than calling us 'girls'. Adult content creators are those who primarily make videos, or do subscription sites. Realistically, a lot of us dabble in both areas. 3) This was my first AVN I attended but I have a feeling that a lot of the men that go to the event are the same men who watch cam models and never say a word. Shy boys.

I love escape rooms! I had an escape room birthday party. The room was themed "Conspiracy" (right around the time the Conspiracy palette came out) and I made the invitations out to look like a classified X-Files folder, I made tin foil party hats, my cake had knives and axes and cherry pie goo to look like blood and the candles were "28?".

I'm not surprised about the older audience demographic after hearing the price of the tickets. A 19 year old is less likely on average to have the funds. I feel like it's reasonable for couples who've saved up some money over time to plan a trip to see their favourite adult film stars together much like any other fan convention

Lot of guys tend to act cool and collective even if we are superfans to not look creepy with the ladies we are fans. I am a big tall dude and I know that can be a bit intimidating for some ladies. So when I am at event I tending to be respectful of the ladies space and time, with a big and often genuine smile. This typically help start up conversation, where I gotten some my best tips on prop and armor building for cosplay.

as a supporter of the x industry I actually got to attend the expo/awards and always with a friend who was guest speaking. The "models" always kept it professional, the fans are different. I was just a guest but the amount of ppl that touched and took photos (some asked some didnt) of me was crazy so u can't even imagine how the real stars felt. Definetly an experience (MGK was performing). I think the organization and communication to event goers has gone down over the years. I think the change from Hard Rock really messed them up.

I went to the AVN’s years ago when it was at the Hard Rock. At that time they had also separated the event to a different week than CES (at one point AVN and CES shared the same hotel and week but they broke them apart due to inflating hotel prices and general chaos between the two events. Anyhow it was great people watching and I got to see quite a few “famous” stars including Sunny Lane who ran for governor in California at one time. I would put it as a once in a lifetime thing especially for the people watching due to the cost. I think the competing expo Exxxotica has more locations and cheaper passes.

I am fascinated and delighted you went to this! As someone who used to be involved in the burlesque community, I'm curious if it was mentioned at any point? I definitely think I'd enjoy attending with a group a friends at least once. I would love to better understand the justification for $600. Are models seeing a cut of that money? If so, I get it. In the NYC burlesque scene, I feel like ticket prices and performer rates aren't high enough for what you're getting. Typically the vendors/exhibitors are also paying to be at conventions though, so how much are they paying for a booth, if VIPs just get... hats?

The couples thing surprises me too. I would also have expected a majority of fan attendees to be younger dudes in their early-to-mid 20s. But then I think how many of them could afford to pay to fly out and get the full AVN experience? I know I couldn't have 😅 So I guess couples and older men makes sense haha

Lmao your story with Megan reminded me of one year I went to Sexpo (think Aussie AVN) not long after I was in the Vagina Monologues. I'm in trackpants and a t-shirt (having just come straight from uni) and a porn star in the tiniest bikini jumped up to ME and went "omg I loved you in the Vagina Monologues!!!" The extra funny thing was that I played the lesbian dominatrix at TVM and ended up striking up a friendship with an actual domme I met at Sexpo lol

I get vendor/artist tables at some events in the midwest (nothing quite like AVN though) and I can fully sympathize with never being given any info and trying to figure it out on the fly. I find that it's more common for larger events to fail with their communication unfortunately. Also, my wife tends to cosplay or dress up when we do events and I see a lot of men do that whole 'walk by snapping pictures or videos while trying to act casual' thing. It's always very obvious lol though she does have a fair amount of people walking up to talk to her as well. From my experience I've noticed that it's common for older men to make straight forward comments on her appearance but the occasional younger man is more likely to awkwardly hang around her and flirt. Women in their 30s or older tend to be very straight forward and won't hesitate to talk to her or compliment her. Younger women and teenager girls tend to throw out a 'you're so pretty' then run away lol

22:10 I think one of the reasons men are more "chill" about being a fan is we don't want to come off as creepy or aggressive. I 100% would try to come off as relaxed for this reason. I'm not that large or scary looking, but I still want to come off as chill or low energy to keep it a positive interaction.

Dudes most likely go out of their way to seem nonchalant when they meet ppl (esp women) they're fans of because they really don't want to be seen or viewed as that creepy guy that ruined someone's experience. These days we have to be hyper vigilant about that, because if we got as excited as we want to, we worry it might be too much and over the top and scare the person we're talking to.
