whats interesting is that the events of each timeline represent the impact each character has on the group. when the most peaceful member aka troy leaves, the group descends into chaos. when the most antagonising member jeff leaves, the group all have a lovely time. there’s like a scale of the most positively impactful to least positively impactful, probably something like troy > abed > annie > shirley > britta > pierce > jeff, and the timelines represent this. very cleverly thought through, expected nothing less from community

The "evil parallel universe goatee" thing comes from the TOS Star Trek episode "Mirror Mirror" -- transporter accident switches Kirk, McCoy, Uhura and Scotty with their counterparts in an "evil" universe. In that universe, Spock has a goatee. (Technically it's a van dyke.)
@deadmeat12406 жыл бұрын
Uhhhh... subtract 50 nerd points from House Normies. LOL
@ctcentralinfo6 жыл бұрын
Actually it was a circle beard not a van dyke and only the Evil Mr. Spock had one. Types of beards: www.realmenrealstyle.com/beard-infographic/
@HOSER9226 жыл бұрын
It technically goes a bit further than that. At the time that Star Trek was filmed, being clean shaven with a military haircut was seen as the ideal 'heroic' look, and someone with a beard was seen as being a "no-good layabout" type of person. So logically, when one made an evil character, or an evil version of a good character, adding a beard was the obvious visual cue. A goatee was chosen because of its associations with psychologists and scholars to signify someone both evil and intelligent. It's also the reason why the Klingons typically have goatees in the original series, and why the Master usually has one in Doctor Who.
@alfredomontenegro1246 жыл бұрын
About to comment the same thing, thumbs up
@youdoitillwatch6 жыл бұрын
It's also worth pointing out that evil Spock wasn't much different from regular Spock. Without emotion, acting solely on logic, and in either universe, Spock simply wanted order and obedience of the (relevant) rules. And it was "evil" Spock who was instrumental in helping the crew get back to their own universe.
@dapeach066 жыл бұрын
If you watch the commentary on this episode, it's totally worth it. There were a lot of unused jokes, like when Britta gets out of the bathroom, Abed asks her "did you release the Kraken?" And she gets really offended, but it turns out that the reason he asked that, is because they had set up their toilet to play movie quotes whenever someone flushed
@Wawagirl174 жыл бұрын
Oh, that's great!

I believe the purpose of this episode was to show how the group dynamic changes when different people are removed. Just based on my own observations: Abed- The group loses its innocence and things are tense. Britta- She forgets her self worth and falls for the first creepy pizza guy she meets. Pierce- Britta and Troy's relationship flourishes Jeff- The group lightens up a bit without him to hold them down (sometimes he needs to hold them down to keep them from flying to close to the sun) Troy - CHAOS!!!

It's late but I'm going to comment anyways cuz I none of my friends watch this show and I just started. I actually take Britta and Troy's getting along in that timeline in that they're both kinda good for each other. Actually it may be more like Troy is good for Britta. Troy respects Britta and treats her like a person whereas Britta does respect Troy and his interests as he moves further away from the high school jock he use to be. This episode was great. I also like the dichotomy of Troy's absence bringing chaos while Jeff's absence takes away the tension. Jeff is the leader but he never really lets anyone let down their guard which is bad when everyone is trying to relax and not put up a front.
@adampkalb4 жыл бұрын
Even though that happened in Pierce's timeline, I guess the connection between Troy and Britta makes sense when they have a baby they name Chewbacca in Abed's timeline. That was when Jeff reminded Annie of her father, Britt called Shirley out on being a pie-pusher, Troy hoped Pierce would die alone, and Abed found a nickel in the hallway. November 28, 2020, 12:59am

The trope of "Evil Abed" and "Evil Cartman" having goatees comes from Star Trek (the original). In an episode called "Mirror, Mirror," Captain Kirk and few others accidentally crossed over into a mirror universe where Starfleet was an evil racist Empire. There, they encountered an "Evil Spock" who had a goatee (to differentiate him from regular Spock).

Great Episode. Everyone else has explained the goatee, so I won't, but it is a classic trope which i was surprised the normies did not know. The song "Roxanne" is about the red light district of Amsterdam. "Putting on the redlight" does not mean to stop someone, like a traffic light. "Putting on the redlight" means open for business . . . as a prostitute. Lyrics: "You don't have to put on the red light ... You don't have to sell your body to the night" The singer, Sting in this case, is asking Roxanne not to work as a prostitute tonight. Not important to the episode, but important for kids to know. And knowing is half the battle. . . . . G.I. Joe

The best timeline happens for a lot of reasons. Jeff going ensures that Britta gets to play her song and be happy, meaning she doesn't start smoking. Jeff hitting his head as an act of karma instead of by pure accident means that he doesn't escalate things with Annie. By singing Roxanne uninterrupted, Pierce isn't able to start his sex story, Troy doesn't get focused on Britta specifically, and Abed doesn't spend his time leading Britta to the bathroom, thus making him miss out. Additionally, seeing Troy and everyone else happy means the troll gets thrown away by Pierce, thus preventing a fight with Troy and Abed. Shirley being there ensures the pies don't burn and she doesn't flip out; Annie being there ensures nobody finds out about the gun or gets hurt. Finally, everyone dancing and having a good time means that Jeff can't bring himself to stop the singing when he comes back.

So in actuality "5" was supposed to be the prime timeline at some point (the one where Abed leaves). Episode 2x3 and 2x4 are out of order continuity wise. In 2x3 you have references to the fact that Pierce did tell his Eartha Kitt story and Abed found a nickle which he gives to Pierce. But for some reason they reversed the episodes. Perhaps they wanted the one where he caught the dice to be the prime timeline. Not sure. More ardent fans may know.

Why undermine medicine, I get saying this stuff to people with cancer because it gives them motivation to think positively but actually believing it as a means of beating cancer is probably more harmful than helpful. That's basically how Jobs died. Maybe if he was treated properly he might have survived. I feel like Suraj loves thinking of himself as a guy who has deep beliefs that are rooted in faith because that's who he wants to be, he wants to be John Locke or something but we don't live in the universe where the island exists. John Locke had reason to have faith he saw supernatural shit constantly, we don't.
