The demand went off the charts when the DEA started cracking down on doctors and pharmacies in regards to opiates and benzos (among a host of other things, but those two are particularly relevant to this topic). When so many people had to go to the streets because they couldn’t get it from their doctor, the streets had to find a way to compensate for the increased demand. That’s where fentanyl came into play. There is a chart of opiate ODs by year that is never discussed. The average dealer has no way to know how much fentanyl to use to cut the product. It was hard enough for the majority of them when it was just about the purity of the heroin. This is also why these “needle exchange” programs and all of this stuff in these cities doesn’t work. The addicts are still getting their product from the streets and who knows how it’s cut.
