The actual true story of how I got named "Tommy" (NOT Thomas): By the time my mom went into labor and my parents were at the hospital, they still hadn't chosen a name for me. Sometime during the delivery process, my dad decided to go to the restroom. While in there, he looked at the tag on his jeans, which were Tommy Hilfiger, and thought to himself "Huh, Tommy..." After I was born, he talked it over with my mom, she liked the name, and "Tommy" was written on the birth certificate. Years later when I was in elementary school, teachers would call me Thomas, but I always corrected them because that's what my mom did when people would call me Thomas around her. When I asked why it was "Tommy" and not "Thomas," she basically said "Every Tommy's real name is Thomas, but my Tommy is different." So yes, I'm different because I'm literally named after a pair of jeans.

"I've always thought of them as one of those 90s brands." And that, my friend, is why everyone loves Tommy Hilfiger. It's a much needed dose of nostalgia during these crazy times. My husband has always worn Tommy cologne. He was wearing it when we first met almost 22 years ago in the early summer of 2000. I also wear Tommy perfume. It smells soooooo good. Whenever I smell my husband when he's wearing it, it reminds me of when we first met. My parents are HUGE Tommy Hilfiger fans as well. It's one of the only brands of clothing they buy. I remember going to Macy's with my parents when I was a kid and they would always buy all kinds of Tommy Hilfiger clothing. I actually just did a little surprise Tommy shopping haul for my parents today. My mom's birthday is this month, so I ordered her a couple of really nice cable knit sweaters and a couple of polo shirts. I also had to get my dad something, so I got him two bathrobes that were on sale and I got him a sweater as well. One thing that you can say about Tommy Hilfiger, which you can't really say about a lot of other brands these days, is that they have always stayed true to who they are and haven't tried to change or jump on the "fast fashion" bandwagon that soooo many other clothing companies have tried to do in recent years. I'm so grateful for that. Some things really just need to stay the same. Their identity has never changed AND they have maintained the same quality that they've had since the 90s. I love them for that.
@irbisae49642 жыл бұрын

I find that typically the people who talk about how they don't try to fit in or aren't 'followers' tend to be followers, just in a different setting. That behavior stems for being rejected/bullied in school, so they want to be the opposite of the people they hate. They blindly reject and follow anything that is anti-whatever is popular. Its hypocritical, they care so much about what other people like just so they can be the opposite. Trying so hard to be special and different from the crowd, to prove they're 'better' than everyone else for being different, obsessing over their image. They end up being social rejects, and if we're being honest, social rejects don't really go anywhere in society, Its just the truth of the matter. You can always tell if someone is a kid or not when discussing this topic, because no adult gives a damn about what is popular or what isn't, they're capable of forming their own opinions and got over their school traumas. Time for you all to grow up. @George and @Bravo.

Tommy Hilfiger is one of many brands from the 90's and early 2000's that are now back in the popular conscious. Nostalgia is a noticeably powerful factor in TH's recent success, as well as those other brands from the early aughts. Their best bet was to lean into this shift. This trend continues elsewhere. Great point Patrick, it didn't really matter if it was true because my cousins, myself and I'm sure many of our friends all stopped buying TH when that rumor came out. I hate that a false rumor got spread about him and it absolutely was not right. Even when social media wasn't as prolific back then, word of mouth spread just as fast. Lastly, even though @Company Man is saying his reason for not including it is because it didn't affect their sales, having watched many of his videos I know he has included fun facts about things even if they don't necessarily have a direct effect on the business itself in the past, which I think is why @Patrick Birke is questioning the decision. I think even just a one-liner about the rumor would have sufficed, but I respect @Company Man difference in opinion and happy he gave a honest response to your comment.

One of the contributing factors to the decline I heard in the 90's as a teen (more so rumors) was that Tommy himself regretted/disliked in secret the "urban community" representing his clothing line and that this caused a boycott in the rap/hip hop community to stop wearing his clothing which of course trickled down to African Americans like myself in general not to wear it. This in return later sparked companies like FUBU (For Us, By Us) to come on the on scene.

The one thing that stands out about Tommy Hilfinger in my mind is that I have never been into fashion. I wear pretty much the same style of clothes every day, comfortable work clothes, and tend to completely ignore whatever is currently in style. Tommy Hilfiger grew in the urban community due to the hip hop scene in New York. Many acts like Brand Nubian and Wu-Tang wore Tommy because of the nautical theme and color schemes. Rapper Grand Puba was a good friend of Tommy Hilfiger and would often shout him out in songs. If you watch some of Grand Puba's early videos or look at his album covers, you'll see TH. Snoop wasn't the reason Tommy Hilfiger grew in the urban community. Snoop was West Coast and had a different vibe.

I have had a positive nostalgia over the brand. I could see some of their 90's designs come back, and i had a bag that was out of the iconic color pallet from them. That i had loved and kept for years. Out of a lot of brands, i enjoy Tommy Hilfiger the most along with Betsey Johnson. Going back to the clothing. I personally despise logo based looks, because i see it everywhere and it feels pretentious, specially with supreme. Also anyone online has made similar choices of using their brand to decorate clothes. But with Tommy Hilfiger, i allways felt they had more fun with the use of the logo on their past clothing designs. Like in the examples shown. They didn't rely on just the words but also made some coll abstract fashion looks that just complemented well with its self.

It rubs me the wrong way that they so strongly felt that being embraced by "the urban community" (SUCH coded language) meant their brand was being degraded.
@RogueTrader-2 жыл бұрын
(I know it's an old comment but i need to reply) It's just the truth and does not really have anything to do with race. In the UK one of our most famous luxury brands Burberry had exactly the same problem in the 90's but it was white working class people and football hooligans all wearing the Burberry check clothes and they just churned out lots of cheap clothes with the trademark check design. (Chasing trends for the quick buck) It eventually went out of fashion, but the brand was trashed to it's original rich sophisticated customer base. They too have now managed to regain their status by almost ditching any clothes with the check for about 15 years, went back to more expensive conservative luxury, limiting the outlets who could sell it and eventually it became popular again. Same story, not a racial issue, many other examples from that time too.
