Thanks for sharing about all of these! Spelling You See has worked well for my kiddo who has a very creative mind that is always thinking in stories and pictures. The color chunking helps him “see” the word in his mind. I have a feeling that my next kiddo will want a more logical, rules-based curriculum, though. I’m thankful that I kept All About Spelling even though it didn’t work for my oldest. See, there can be a good reason to hoard curriculum! 😆

I felt the same about Logic of English. It is a very thorough program, and I learned alongside my daughter with some of the rules.

yes, love the spelling walk-through!!! We have used SOOOO many of these as well and ultimately landed on LOE as well this year and it seems to be a good fit.

Spelling wisdom sounds really unique, mine are natural spellers so haven’t been able to find a reason to buy a program, but this sounds a really cool way to learn. Thanks so much for sharing

Bad speller here!! I have slowly improved over the years, but I am not confident, and I love that spell check is available for me! From my own experiences I have decided that consistent practice over the years (and I almost think it doesn't matter tons how you get the practice in) will give you great gains. At this point, my two oldest are much more natural spellers than I was-- but I am still a better than they are at the moment! (It amazes me 😅) I hate the spelling lists-- too many bad memories. And when we did TGATB their rules would not stick in my head! They felt way to complicated to remember solidly and not confuse. So when my daughters both felt that way too, we went to Spelling You See, and I think it's a good fit for us. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Tried all about spelling and it was sooooo tedious with the cards and the book and the tiles 😖 held off on spelling until grade 3 and just read alot and did daily copy work. Now my child is a really good speller (she tells me she just sees the words in her head and writes them down) . We will be using Natural Speller from 4th on and its a nice easy book that goes to high school if needed.

That makes sense about spelling clicking around grade 4. TGTB level 4 has a spelling workshop where it gets deeper than how they have done it before. 😃

This made me laugh when i saw it because I’ve been on the same journey with my kids. We’ve tried so many spelling programs over the last 2 years and have finally settled on Phonetic Zoo for my oldest and All About Spelling for my younger child. I still have two more who are in the learning to read phase. Like you, i feel like I’ve learned a lot about spelling over the past couple years and hopefully I’ll know what my younger two will need when the time comes.

Very helpful, thank you! Think I'm going to get over the expense of Logic of English and go with this program. I've been thinking about spelling for a year and it's time to pick one. My 8 year old is picking up some words from random memorizing but she seems ready for more structure around it.

My daughter is using IEW Phonetic Zoo. And we are really enjoying it. It's completely independent except for the "Personal Spelling" weeks. It's one I'd say is more appropriate for upper elementary-middle school.

Im also thinking of doing the spelling booklet by KZbin mom MomDelights over the summer. Reminds me of Phonetic Zoo as she focuses on a spelling list for each rule.

We use sequential spelling with my 7 (almost 8) year old. It’s super bare bones, doesn’t give really any instruction for how to teach the words. It took me several months to figure out how I want to use it with my daughter. I really love the way the lists are set up, but I wish I could have a little more hand holding. We also do TGATB so we always have the spelling in that for back up.

I always come back to Logic of English Foundations for reading. But we have never moved into Essentials. My oldest is 10 and is currently doing Phonetic Zoo but I'm thinking moving to Essentials. He seems to have forgotten many of the phonograms and spelling rules from Foundations. I felt like at Foundations D the spelling rules were coming too fast for us to really get them to stick. Like I was expecting him to just intuitively pick up on this like I did as a child. Thanks so much and looking forward to more on Essentials!

Have you checked out the books by Susan Anthony "Spelling Plus" and the "Dictation" resource book. These books were so simple, and my son loved the dictation and that there were only 1000 words to learn (he's a math and science kid so the numbers matter to him, lol).

So you prefer LOE Essentials over AAS? We've been using LOE Essentials and my son is progressing and doing well, but I'm getting really bogged down by teaching it... the grammar is killing me! I'm debating about either continuing with LOE and dropping the grammar or moving into AAS next year, but I'm nervous because we're so invested in LOE! Any thoughts on how those two programs compare? Thanks!!
@sciencemama
@sciencemama 2 ай бұрын
In terms of spelling I think LOE is similar to AAS and I would use either ... it just depends on whether I want grammar and vocab as well. Like I think I might use AAS for my daughter who is using TGTB for grammar/vocab. But, I hear you on the grammar - we are feeling a bit bogged down right now too but I keep reminding myself that we are going to go through it all 3 times over before we are done!

So out of all these along with abeka phonics what do you like best from choice 1 -10 love to know since you tried basically all 😂 also love to know is it easier to teach a kinder sonlight phonics and abeka math. Meaning just focus on math and reading … or it is easier to teach an all in one ? Like sonlight does they have a kinder la curriculum which is has spelling , reading? Does it delay a child if I were to just focus on reading skills and math? And teach spelling / grammar first year and just use a kinder level? Love to know as this is my first year teaching/ homeschooling and terrified to mess up. Also if I were to just focus on reading and math ( using abeka phonics ) does that mean for first year ( next year) I’ll use sonligjt kinder level for LA? For spelling/ grammar history ? Thank you for helping and clarifying

That first year can definitely be anxiety inducing - but you've got it! Really you can't go wrong with either option ... Sonlight and Abeka are both amazing programs. Sometimes you just need to try it out and see if it fits your homeschool as well as your individual kiddos!
