Don't leave your lens in the sun especially if it gets hot where you live. Heating the lens can cause the oil in the blades inside to evaporate and then "condense" on the glass elements causing haze. Even worse is the heat causing balsam separation! Best to carefully take the lens apart and clean it with suitable solution.

Thanks for the video, love the image comparisons. Just an FYI though, UVC does not pass through glass, so it will not slow mold growth. Sounds like it would be best to just clean the mold yourself or pay to have it done.

@@FreshSqueezedLightning I don't personally disagree with you, but on the other hand I don't have any personal experience either. And researching this with people that seem to be experts in the field, they claim that it is very unlikely unless a lens is overly infested.

It literally does not!! There are already millions of fungal spores all around you and on your lenses, it needs the right environment to grow. If youremove the food,it will stop growing.
@danc20142 жыл бұрын
Then when the moisture returns it grows again. You need to kill the sources not just incubate it for growth later. . 1 million might be in the air but a bad lens will have 1 million in your case now.

@BartechTV5 жыл бұрын
I found carrots work well if you cut them very thin using a sharp knife. I was able to fix two lenses using this method. (Tamron Adaptall SP 90mm and Nikon Series E 50mm). The carrot juices dissolve the fungus, and won't damage the coating since it's alkaline. Then you can use 99% Isopropyl and a microfiber cloth to remove the carrot residue.

I always buy vintage lenses that are listed as having no fungus, no haze and no balsam separation. I do a light check on arrival and if I spot any it goes back. Ebay are pretty good with returns and will almost always side with the buyer.

Can the fungus effect your digital sensor? I’ve heard it can but wasn’t sure if it’s true.
@alchemistalchemist60516 жыл бұрын
If you let your lens attached to your digital camera and leave it in your cellar for 20 years, sure it might, but otherwise there should not be any issue :)
@Frisenette5 жыл бұрын
I don’t see why not. There are fungal spores breathing in and out of the lens every time you focus it. When they get on the sensor or surrounding metal with even a slight amount of condensation they will start growing. This is not as much of a problem with film, where fresh film is going through the camera all the time. Just don’t use vintage lenses on digital equipment. It is not worth the risk.

You can't adapt canon fd lenses onto the ef mount lol You can still buy an adaptor without glass in it but your 28mm won't have infinity focus.

The Dead Immortal: So, you were "lolling" to Jack on another video, that he could've bought another Fuji focal reducer for further adapting. In this case, and in most cases, lolling appears snarky and childish. As in; "look how silly you are that you didn't know this thing that i know", "look how much better i am", etc. It's childish mockery disguised in useless trendy habits. Well, here the lols hit your own knee. Contrary to what you say, FD mount CAN be converted to EF. There are Conversion kits that enable that in Ebay, Amazon, all over the internet. Check KZbin videos aswell. But the prices aren't usually the cheapest. Often more on the expensive side, but also decent offerings are around (if you search enough). It really depends on your needs if it's worth it, but i would personally reserve such conversion for more special / faster lenses, like the 50mm 1.4 etc. You can try the adapter with optical element, but you're bound to lose more or less quality. As it hear about it, it really isn't ideal. Instead i would suggest to buy some other cheap but good quality lenses (and sell the Canon, or reserve for a mirrorless camera) with longer flange distances. Like the Pentax-M 28mm 3.5, simple cheap PK to EF adapter. Pentax-M is really sharp even wide open (Pentax-K is even better, but rarer and expensive), sharpness, handling and colors are it's best qualities. Bokeh can be nervous, so it's best for landscapes / hyperfocal snaps, close-ups and macro, and of course everyday use if the (possibly) nervous bokeh doesn't bother you, or you're aware of it. Also look into Vivitar 28mm 2.0. There are many versions, but the Close Focus marked lens is legendary, Wide Angle / Macro lens. I wish to obtain it one day. Even if it's well-sought after, you might with proper patience and perseverance find one day, if it's meant for you. I'm not so well-versed with 28mm lenses, but there's two suggestions atleast. 28mm, 50mm and 135mm were very popular primes ranges back in the day (many many manufacturers jumped in the wagon) and many of them are good to excellent in optics / handling, especially the 135mm lenses and classic 50mm too of course. Happy shooting and hopefully the right solution comes to you in good time! Be well.

Can fungus be cleaned out? I mean if you do clean it does it fix the lens or will it leave permanent damage?
@hizokuto6 жыл бұрын
Some fungus is just on the surface of the lens and can be cleaned off pure glass like dust. Sometimes they leave behind a more permanent etching if they were able grow into and damage a soft coating.
@HibikiKano6 жыл бұрын
What kind of cleaner would you recommend to remove light fungus. Its really light mostly cloudy. But I want to keep them cleaned because they hold more sentimental value than any real value. They are S.S.C. coated FD lenses. Is there any solvent I sohuld avoid when dealing with S.S.C. ?
@hizokuto6 жыл бұрын
Online it seems like people use solutions of ammonia or hydrogen peroxide to kill and remove the fungus. For greasy things that soap won't get, the "harshest" organic solvent I've seen used was naptha (Lighter fluid/goo gone). Avoid acetone since it can dissolve and ruin a lot of plastics/paints. Alcohol on the fungus didn't work for me, and I never bothered reopening my lens to try something else. If you don't have the proper tools, compare the cost of tools to just buying a cleaner lens.
@HibikiKano6 жыл бұрын
@@hizokuto Thing is lenses have a sentimental value. They were my late grandfathers. I know they are not worth much in terms of money, but I really like using them for that reason, they just feel nostalgic in every way. A replacement lens would maybe shoot better, but would just not be the same thing. Will check online for tue concentration of peroxide as well as bleach to use...also find pure bleach without perfumes.

The last thing you want to do is put a lens in the sun. It breaks down the lubricants and can cause haze on the glass elements. There’s a reason all lens makers say store in a cool dry place. Get it professionally serviced, it’s your only option.

The tip with Sunlight UV is excellent, HOWEVER windows block UV rays so it doesn't help to expose the lens inside the home. Bring them outside. Now the thing is, the UV is stronger in summer days around noon, but it is not safe to expose the lens in hot sunlight - especially the electronic ones. I would rather expose them before 10am and after 4pm - again, in summer time and outdoors. For the fungus, if not treated, it will spread so take measures timely. I also like to keep a lens in a sealed Ziploc bag.

Fungus in the lens greatly reduces image quality, especially when shooting against bright light. Characteristic is a loss of contrast, a decrease in color saturation (whitening). This is visible to anyone who is not blind. The fact that the author does not see the influence does not mean that he is not. I see this deterioration in the above video material))
