Comparing a Tyler White Mandolin to a Gilchrist and Nugget!

I received a Tyler White mandolin in late August of this year and have been excited about the sound of it. Today we get to hear how it stacks up against the legendary builders of the mandolin world (Gilchrist and Nugget). Enjoy!

Great comparison vid Jake! Highlights the unique voice of each builder while also pointing to similarities in tone. I would say the White and Gil have more in common with each other, than the White and the Nugget. Mike just knows how to get those low woody mids! All stellar builds, no doubt!

I think this just goes to show how well the White holds up against two premier model mandolins. To me, the Gilchrist has a slightly more open tone, the Nugget is choked a bit to highlight the mids, and the White has tasty warmth with very shiny top end. Thank you for the demo. At the end of the day, it's all in the hands of the player (but a great mandolin never hurts 😉).

I’m biased because I own White #40, but I think in terms of warmth and tone your White knocked the socks off of the Gil and the Nugget. Your Nugget has a gorgeous top end, but a 6 month old mandolin that sounds that good so fast is something special.

Cant really compare the F5 Gilchrist to an A model mandolin although it looks superb and really has great volume and tone. I gotta go with the Gilchrist. Course everyone has their own sound they prefer. Like your content, great player. Did you order your Gilchrist through Steve or did you get through another outlet?

I like all 3. To me the white sounds like a less played in version of the Gilchrist. I suppose that’s not very surprising. They are both newer instruments with a similarly hyper-detailed building style. The 30+ year old nugget with a koa fingerboard sounds completely different. It’s got a more prominent low-mid range and a more “woody” tone.

I think the White and the Gilchrist sound very similar! The nugget sure is a sweet sounding mandolin, albeit a little more soft-spoken and thinner to my ear. All in all three sweet, sweet mandolins for sure!

I know you probably didn't intend on this to be a "ranking" video. However, I can't resist. My tastes and opinion (remember this is coming from a bluegrasser) The Nugget and White are on pretty equal ground I think, but that Gilchrist just has the cutting power and midrange to cut through. I love the sound of your Gil. It's my favorite with the Nugget and White a toss-up. Good playing and great sounding mandolins.

Yeah, they sound really nice, and the John Reischman tunes really show of what they can do sonically, but like the violin, above a fairly basic entry-level threshold mandolin is a rich mans hobby.

nugget has the best harmonics...lol. The white sounds round...the nugget is pointy....the ghilchrist is (f) holy
