I think it's ironic how my favorite version to watch as a kid, muppet treasure island, is the least consistent with the source material. Dr Livesley has a predominant role in most other versions but takes a back end in this movie, and Jim is played out as just some kid who doesn't do much himself. The relationship between him and john silver, which is the main ethical and emotional conflict within the story, is carried entirely by Tim Curry. In contrast, the 1990 version has my favorite version of Jim, as he seems to fit the "coming of age" plot; he starts off as a frightened boy being pushed around by strangers in his own home, then develops into a respected seaman and even goes as far as killing someone (although in self defense) to save his friends. He actually feels like a strong protagonist driving the plot forward himself. By the end of the movie he comes across as a "man" and fulfills his character arch.

This is a very well put together comparison video, but I agree that the 1950 and 1990s versions both have the strongest representations of both the source material and casting the characters. I'd say the relationship between Jim and John Silver is weaker in the 1950s version, even though it has by far the most iconic portrayal of Silver.

I think the Robert Newton version is the best and also Disney's best movie. While a court case was taking place over whether Bobby Driscoll could legally work in the UK they filmed all of his sequences! The veto on his employment had no impact on the film. I have read Disney thought of inserting an animated element (there is brief animation in 20,000 LEAGUES) but wisely chose not to. Despite being a box office success as a team, I believe Jackie Cooper and Wallace Beery couldn't stand each other!

Probably...with many to most people who are of the "Baby Boomer" age (and I'm one at nearly 73 years of age)...the Walt Disney Productions 1950 "Treasure Island" has first place in these four reviewed "Treasure Island" versions of the famous Robert Louis Stevenson classic novel. Yes , many good actors made these movies notable... like Wallace Berry, Robert Newton and the late and great Charlton Heston as the character of Long John Silver but , of those three fine actors, in my opinion, Robert Newton played it best! Besides...he was the real British born and raised actor of the three best "Silver" portrays with the style and speech on the money! Everytime I read the "Treasure Island" classic (as I am doing now [8-2023]) I come up with the voices of the Disney version pronouncing all the lines of the book in my head, let alone the movie scenes backgrounds. Oh...never have seen The Muppet version...besides, it seems out of place in such a rating. And yes...the great Orson Wells [1915 - 1985] did another movie version of "Treasure Island " in 1972. Speaking about Wells...his voice, style, use of the English language was great! So many fantastic movies, and documentaries are credited to Orson.

Coming from someone who loves treasure Island and love stories of pirates, I can say definitively in my opinion that the 1950s version is the best. The 1990s version was flat and dull. And Muppet treasure island, ehh. In my opinion it should not have been made. I didn't care for treasure planet either, at departed from the original story too much. And I'm a sucker for the original. What's funny is even though Robert Newton does overact compared to today, I don't know there's just something about him i like. Maybe it's because I felt like he took the role seriously, and I don't think any of the others did. I also feel like he genuinely cares about Jim in the 1950s version, particularly in the scene where he can't bring himself to shoot him even though he considers it.
@m.n.dejong76168 ай бұрын
The ‘90 version boring? Are you kiddin’?! It’s easily the best version and Heston was the most bad ass Long John Silver. ‘34 version is a close second, it’s excellent. ‘50 has some issues imo but the muppet version outright sucks. I understand why people like or love it and good for them, but I did not.

Is this video a joke? Because i laughed out loud at your comments on the 1990 version. You must be joking? I don't want to be too serious, because this is your choice and is what you think. ( you do write, ''' i really hate pirates'' ) So i am taking this as a funny joke video. But any way. in my opinion the 1990 version beats all of them, its way better in every way, wins hands down. 1990 version sticks really close to book, the other versions less so. 1990 version uses lots of dialogue from the book, the other versions less so.
@SerenaGx2 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but the 90's version was so boring. I did like some parts though, like at the end where Silver tries to trick Jim ala the 1930's version, and he's just like; "Nah, I'm not falling for that one, you fucker." I really do hate pirate movies. But I did this video because I already had to watch the 50's and 30's versions for another video. But yeah, obviously if you actually like pirates you'd probably like all of these movies a lot more than I did. I think the 90's version using so much dialogue from the book was the problem. Books and films are different mediums, so changes have to be made when adapting them. The conversations were too long, and very dry.
