I appreciate that you did the conversion of the prices in USA, GBP, Euro. 🙌🏾 This video was a real eye opener. Even though the prices are relatively similar to the UK and US. It’s technically more expensive to shop in Jamaica because the living wage is lower.

Yes they existed in Trinidad and Tobago when oil was king and foreigners employed etc, were living here so they had a pricey standard compared to our Chinee shop on every corner or groceries which apart from being cramped offered consumers better deals like buy 1 get the other half price etc.

You didn’t have to be so rude by calling the food items junk. You were quick to cast judgement. Rochielin did a good deed by donating food to the less fortunate. Why didn’t you acknowledge that instead of criticizing her? Most people would love to eat healthy but cannot afford organic, healthier, pricier foods. People who live in the city do not have the luxury of walking into their backyard, picking a coconut and making oil from it. Hope you never find yourself in the same situation as the less fortunate.

Great video Rochelle. Very informative. After i watched it, I did a price check on the same size items in one supermarket in NY. Using the lowest prices (no sale items, but some store brands) the total came to about $20. Buying all the items in the big brand names would push the price to about $25. Many thing have gotten very expensive. For a few years now many food items have gotten smaller, with the prices staying the same or priced higher.

It would be interesting if you were to add Progressive Grocers to that list of super markets for a new video. Also some basic items such as rice, flour etc are non taxed as the impact on lower income households would be high.

I see a lot of comments saying “it’s the same here” while others in foreign countries also says it’s cheaper there than Jamaica 🤷🏼‍♀️ The bottom line is income, the average Jamaican takes home 7-8k JMD per week that’s 50-55 USD PER WEEK… The 10 items she purchased can’t last a week not even for one person. Most Jamaicans don’t own a vehicle the taxi fare starts at 1USD depending on distance sometimes it’s 4 different fares so that’s another 10usd per week for fare, plus lunch at work. You literally left with the most 10 USD at the end of the week & your rent isn’t paid yet, your light or water n if you’re a single parent smh. I know for a fact it’s hard every where but the truth is some place harder than some. THE GOOD ABOUT JAMAICA IS THE ABILITY TO GROW OUR OWN FOOD THAN A LOT OF PLACES. I live in the country so I don’t buy provisions and some fruits n vegetables. But there aren’t much work in the country side so ppl prefer to go in the cities and in the cities you have to buy almost everything. In the end whole a we under pressure me way or the next cus US rents outrageous but on average American earns way more than a Jamaican based on official stats

For those living in the US, there is a supermarket known as ALDI. Especially in NY, it is becoming very famous because of its prices. For example, a loaf of wheat bread that would cost $2.00 to $3.00 cost only $0.79 (same brand.) A 32 ounce of apple juice that would normally cost at least $2.50 is $0.89 at ALDI.

Hi Rochie , I was browsing and I came across your channel and it is indeed a fact that prices are going up. I am grateful that you listed the prices especially for those of us living in the U.S for us to see and compare and also come to terms with what Jamaicans have to face each day. What I do know is that some of the prices are about the same for me that reside in New York. Corned Beef does go up sometimes to over or nearly $6.00 usd so I avoid it if it isn’t necessary.

Jamaica is indeed expensive, but sometimes it depends our preferences and the brands we love. We are also paying for the aesthetics +tax😥😀 But at the end of the day, we all need to find a comfortable way to emancipate ourselves from a lot the major stores and what they sell. While at the same time remaining honest on how difficult it can be to go back to basics. For example, farming is great, but its not easy and the same goes for being completely self-sufficient etc. At this point, its best that we work on managing our budgets carefully and finding true balance in all we do. Give thanks and praise🙏❤💛💚
