Great comparison and demo! But I love reading the comments and seeing so many people say things like "Nothing beats the warm vintage electronics of the 106. The 106 wins hands-down." In a raw or exposed comparison like this of course you're going to hear differences. There are so many variables, it's impossible to get them to sound perfectly the same. Yet in context in a song or live performance, I'm pretty sure not a single person would be able to tell if it's the 106 or X. Technology has come so far that in real-world applications the difference between vintage and emulation is negligible at best. No one cares if you're using true vintage electronics or not. Just chill and make good music with whatever works best.

What about musicians just wanting to make music with instruments that truly inspire them? Of course the Juno X is perfect for gigs, but what about wanting to have inspiring instruments to play and create on? And no Vst or digital emulation I’ve played or heard has ever truly solved the voice allocation differences between vintage analog synths and digital recreations. Another highly creative synth by Roland, Thank you for showing us. Been trying to understand the need for a copy of a vintage synth for a decade now. Musicians want the "exact" sound duplicated...okay...for nostalgia or because you wanted one at the time and couldn't buy one. I understand this second chance at a synth you missed out on. For me it was the JD800 and the JP8080, but I don't buy old synths because I play them long and hard, and old synths are going to fail, I can't afford the repair costs, if repairable. I had an analog Juno and a 707 I bought new in the 80s. I didn't like them, I still don't, since I lived at that time there isn't a mystery to them, todays synths are far superior in creating new original sounds. I am always looking for highly sound creative synths, but not in the past. The analog resurgence of the 2000s showed me how well digital and analog can work together in creating new sounds never heard. Today I think the real skill of a keyboardist, besides being a master of their instrument, is understanding sound and effects design and the layering of different synths (analog and digital) and knowing ahead of time how they will sound together. (applies only to recording, stage use is, most the time, completely different).

The Juno X perhaps is 2 percent different. Your points make sense, but for me I feel like why not just use their plugin if you’re not getting an analog synth? If I’m spending $2000 on hardware I want analog. Trust me a lot of these extra features are stuff you wouldn’t miss on analog synths. The Prophet 6 is my main Poly synth, It’s unbelievable and don’t ever feel limited. If I want to do some more complicated stuff I’ll use a plugin. If this Juno X hardware synth is using their Zen technology then it’s the same sound engine as the plugin anyway, so use the Juno plugin and put $2000 towards a use analog synth or a new Korg Prologue 16. Also hardware is hardware right, with the plugin you can use 4 of them simultaneously if you want but you can’t do that with hardware. You need set up 2 tracks in your DAW (Midi & Audio) then play in the part, edit the midi, print the audio, move on to the next track. If you wanna go back and change something, you gotta do it all over again. If it’s not analog, it’s not worth the hassle of hardware and $2000 out of my bank account imo.

Similar sounds, but the modulation depths and envelope settings/attack/decay shapes probably didn't match entirely (also I wonder if it's possible to limit polyphony to the same as the original 106 - note stealing has a big impact on the overall sound). In the end it doesn't matter that much, the X can no doubt produce a lot of nice sounds and can sound more analog with some detuning/modulation, the more important question to answer is does the UX suck or is it better than the Jupiter X/Xm. It certainly looks intuitive in terms of the panel for 106 style sounds, but the other synth models maybe have some menu diving e.g. for modulation assignments (and Roland menu diving is not so fun in my experience)? It would be interesting to test wide & slow pitch modulation on high notes with a saw wave to hear if there's any significant aliasing - I'd like to know the details of the waveform generation and if it's wave-table based, how much oversampling, internal sample rate, and what kind of sample point interpolation is used (I develop synth plugin software - so this is my concern, probably not so interesting for most folk). How about a comparison with the ACB version of the 106 model?

@@MRTUNA I'm an amateur music producer and synth collector but for my day job I'm an industrial designer. If it were me, I would have used small colour-change LEDs located above the buttons as they appear on the original JUNO 6/60/106. The glassy buttons are too contemporary for a retro styling project. I know Roland is playing to the nostalgia factor, and competing with Korg's reissues of famous synths, but wouldn't it be cool if they simply did a JUNO-206 or a betaJUNO with completely new contemporary styling? I prefer, simple, elegantly designed and well-built (metal and wood) instruments that stand alone without requiring plug-ins, plug-outs, VSTs or outboard apps to utilize all the features. Behringer's VC340 is a good example. Korg has also done a nice job with their re-releases/updates of the Korg 700 and the ARP clones.

We're competing with Korg? Amusing but not so much no. They don't have the footprint. Sys8 is not in the same device category; that's one place where people are going wrong. Certainly it has the sonic ability - but the intention of the underlying design/tech is very different. Jupiter/Juno/Fantom are in a range to which you cannot apply sys8. That's intentional. Comparing them is obviously possible but mistakes the purpose of the different instruments. As far as cost goes - it's at the low end price bracket for our musicians generally. Hello mr tuna. Your juno 106 has a worn gain switcher that's why it crashes! It is a very common problem in junos. I recommend that you take it out and cancel that switcher system, bypassing it (you are left with the highest gain and you can continue controlling it with the volume potentiometer). I did it to mine thanks to my technician and it sounds hyper mega HD! You will not regret it! Greetings from Argentina!

Brilliant video as ever. Super close to my ears. Question for you tho - how does it compare to the ACB version I have with the System-8? Given the other ‘clothes’ this can wear I’m thinking of trading it in for this (seems much more immediate than the Jupiter X). Thanks!
@MRTUNA2 жыл бұрын
definitely a much easier-to-use interface than the JPX, and without much sacrifice to the panel controls. I plan to do another direct comparison with the System-8 because I know people are dying to say the System-8 is the one to have, but I really really enjoying just 'playing' the JunoX.... its got some serious build quality and a ***Beautiful*** keybed to play on. its just a nicer experience, even if the System-8 is more nuanced and detailed, the JunoX just sounds 'GOOD' to me.
@lit3work2 жыл бұрын
@@MRTUNA that would be great. I have a montage and the playing experience on that blows the S8 out the water. I do love my S8 and its sounds but it is a bit plasticky for sure. Enjoyment and how it feels to play is often overlooked and it’s good to hear and see you clearly enjoy the Juno X. Thanks again man.

@@lit3work I had the FA-06, as I understand the same keybed. I hated the insensitive keybed, but loved the FA, so I flipped it for a FA-07. Best decision, since the 1 cm shorter keys of FA-06, S8, Juno-DS are just a dealbreaker.

All this talk I'm hearing about ACB>ZenCore and I gotta say so far all the comparisons I've seen with the Juno x and the 106 it's as close as I would expect ACB to be. like 95% accurate, maybe even more. Sad thing is that the Juno x is priced at least $600 dollars more than it should be.

It looks like the 106, but listening on high end DA converters, you can hear the differences jump out. No knock against the X, if character is what you're after it does a good job,but so do current Vst plugins, like Softubes Model 84,or ACB Cloud. The raw sound of the 106, is still not met in any of these demos I've heard. I own a Fantom which has some ABM models,and it sounds nothing like a real 106. ACB is ALot closer,but still not there yet. The filter is a dead give away.

Do you think this will impact how much old Juno 106's sell for, and how frequently they'll sell? Timing is very interesting, since an old 106 was likely going to be my next studio purchase but this at least has me contemplating the X. We'll see where my head's at in a couple months. I'd love your thoughts MR TUNA

Own a Juno-60. I think you'll see a spike in price tbh as this has peaked more peoples interest. Maybe in a year or so when reviews etc settle down and people realise there's nothing in it... they might come down a bit. Personally, I'd buy an X or this. Way better options, works, warranty, and the 106 model nails my 60. I bought mine mostly as a center piece, like furniture. Otherwise I'd take the X or this any day.

The Juno x waveforms sounds more grainy and 106 is more glued, The filter of the X is more transparent, not bad, but not Juno six seems to have more overtones, creates a bit more depth. The low end of the x is good, but it's again the filter that makes the difference and the same for the ADSR. Juno X sounds very nice, but it's not a Juno 106. I compared my 106 to the Jupiter Xm. On It's own the Juno x, Jupiter X and Jupiter Xm are great synths and I like the sound, but the Juno X and Jupiter X are not worth their money, It's just another way to sell their ZEN Core engine that has been paid for. Think I'm gonna sell my Xm and Roland cloud, I bought some Behringer clones, SH-1 RD-8 and RD-9, no need for the Roland stuff any more.

the only difference that matters is the user interface--- basically anything the JPX does the JunoX can do and vice versa. They come with different stock models, but you can load a Jupiter in to a Juno and a Juno60 into the Jupiter if you wanted. Im not sure if you can load the JunoX model into a Jupiter, but they have literally identical sound engines, and the juno takes what they learned from the JPX design and makes it an easier more accessible synth
