Rap is not competitive anymore because it's much easier to make money from it now and to create a platform for yourself whereby you can be seen. Back in the day rappers had to put out mixtapes and battle a plethora of other talented emcees with unique styles just to get record deals . Rappers had to get the respect of the streets before an A&R looked in their direction and they were judged on skill more than anything else. In the 90s when the G-Funk era rose to prominence Hip Hop started to slowly stray away from pure lyricism which New York prided itself on and sound ,song construct and themes began to take priority. This allowed for rappers like Tupac to overshadow so many because while not being the most lyrical , Tupac's song making ability was much greater than alot of his peers and this made hip hop more digestible and accessible to mainstream America. Ofc New York and the east coast had to adapt to this and rappers like Biggie and Jay Z and Nas were able to balance lyricism with song making ability. Later artistes like Jah Rule ,50 cent , Nelly would prove that the ability to make good songs that people could feel or vybe to would outweigh lyricism but alot of New York emcees continued to fight against this and kept lyrically beefing and battling one another to prove who is the best and that was no longer a priority for record labels who saw how much money Hip Hop could make once incorporated into Pop Culture. Dumbed down lyrics ,catchy hooks and catchy beats became the most important thing and Atlanta became the centre of attention in Hip Hop as a result. This has only increased as time has gone by and old traditions of what it was to be an emcee is no longer valued and many have lost the art. It's all about money and the soul of it has been taken away.
