My grandfather carried an Opinel for years. Great video.

It's amazing how we have come back around.

I've had an opinel for about as long as any of my knives and I like to go back to it on occasion. It's just simple and light and SUPER sharp. The Old Bear makes me curious to try something similar.

Aside from the locking mechanism, in a blind test, I would not be able to tell the difference between the two. Opinels still have a special place in my heart for them.

I have a few Opinel knives both carbon and stainless, they both have their place in my life. Thank you for sharing SD

I never heard of the old bear knife. Looks pretty good to me, I might have to pick one up!

I took the thumb stud off as it prevented the blade from cutting through fruits and vegetables. It acted as a stop which limited the knifes use. A big limitation.

I never thought of that. That is something to consider

Hey, those thumb studs are neat!

Yes they are!!! I need to figure out what to do with the other two.

@@SurvivingtheDaily you'll end up with more knives to use them on, lol!

The Opinel you have there is Carbon steel. If it says Inox, then its stainless steel. Good video, and nice find regardless.

You're right!!! Nice catch.

Checkout MAM, I prefer the locking mechanism.

Once broken in, my old bear flicks open without a thumb stud. However, if you cut anything like fruit or your handle gets wet in any way, you can't flick it for at least a couple of days until the wood dries. Mine also seems to have some forward and back play (not side to side) when locked.. but yours doesn't look like it does. Maybe I messed with mine too much tho... not sure if it had the play from day one.

Once I got the thumb stud on it, I was able to flick it open and closed. Maybe the added weight? Maybe I needed to work it in? But that's good to know about getting it wet.
@AlexanderSamarth9 ай бұрын
@@SurvivingtheDaily for sure... mine was a lot stiffer than yours when I first got it, but it does break in.

Why dont you close the Opinel, same way you close the Old Bear?
@SurvivingtheDaily6 ай бұрын
The collar takes two hands to turn open or closed. I have the habit of locking it when the knife is closed.
