Have you tried any of these "grounds" before? What was your experience?

I use a 12” silicone squeegee immediately after applying the Golden PastelGround to smooth it out and eliminate the brush marks! Works like a charm the Pastel Ground is perfectly smooth with no brush marks.

Fantastic tip! Thanks for sharing it.

I bought a silicone squeegee as well, but haven't tried it out yet. I also want to use a rubber brayer (used for printmaking) to get a smooth surface. I don't like the textures using a brush or palette knife.

@@leslieharris9088 I thin down the consistency of the Pastel Ground and mix it with acrylic paint to get the background color I want. I usually apply two or three coats to my boards. Experiment with the consistency and layers till you find what works for you.

I have been using clear gesso by Liquitex..applying it with a small foam roller on 184 lb. Weight toned paper. No ridges. Very fine grit. The clearness of the gesso allows me to apply it to a mid-toned paper without the paper turning white. It’s rather expensive.

Great tip! Thanks for sharing. I will definitely be trying that!

Does the finished paper work well up hold a lot of layers of pastel?

@@roscmon yes

@@roscmon Great question! I use a lot of layers and so far so good. I’ve not yet had it crumble under use. It doesn’t hold as much as a commercially prepared surface of comparable grit.

Thanks a lot! Very useful information and your experience! I will try to find these materials. I'll try to prime the surface under the pastel.

You're welcome! I have heard from another artist that the Fine Pumice Gel can peel off some boards. So be warned. The samples I created used print-making paper that was later adhered to mounting board. I hope to observe those pieces over time and see if they change.

Thanks! I've not done something like this before. Was a challenge to get it organized in a way that I hoped would make sense to someone else!

I use a prayer to flatten ridges . It comes out very flat.
