Tradition is so prominent in the beginning of both texts, the transition away from it temporarily then its resurgence. Very much what you've said. Public perception, expectations and tokenistic gestures are also explored. Pride v humility too 🙂

Absolutely! I think the term 'resurgence' is an excellent way for students to examine the shifts in attitudes when it comes to tradition. Thank you for your comment!

Thanks. Love the stream and ripples symbolism analysis. I'll likely use that. Blair more than changes in his attitude to the Queen, he goes from the "most radical modernisation...in three hundred years" (Janvrin) to, as he walks through the palace garden in a scene emulating the Queen and Queen mother at Balmoral (uh ohh!), "reduc(ing) classroom sizes". Tradition wins, nothing really changes.
@TheEnglishLab4 жыл бұрын
True! That definitely supports the similarity in tradition holding strong. Thanks for your input.

@@TheEnglishLab On that point, I also think Priam's journey is an inspired attempt to change the future he sees for Troy but he is, like Blair, but way more manifestly, unsuccessful. Both messages are presented as flashforwards, interestingly.

Hey , is there a quote in ransom that talks about the ripples in the river, which you made reference too. Thanks
@TheEnglishLab4 жыл бұрын
In the orange-covered verison of the novel, it is on page 140, just after Somax tells of his sons and Priam considers if her ever felt the same. "He had taken up a stick and he threw it now far out into the stream. The fishlings, destined to be disappointed again, darted in towards the circles of light that went pulsing from where it fell, themselves for a moment making a small disturbance on the surface before the river went back to its own life again." "Small disturbance" is an excellent way to see the events of the text. If we imagine a running stream as life moving onwards and the power of the stream being symbolic of the power of convention and accepted behaviour/responses, then the manner in which the "small disturbance" is overcome by the stream around it allows us to view the difficulty in accepting "a new way". You can see similar ideas within "The Queen" when it comes to the discussion of "the events of this summer", as if it is out of the box, out of the ordinary and an "unprecedented" series of events that disrupted the usual flow of things

A bit confused how u said the convention of change is carried on for Elizabeth but not prism (ashen u referred to neo killing)…. How is Elizabeth’s “change” carried on??
@TheEnglishLab3 жыл бұрын
Hi Charlotte - really glad that you're seeking clarification. In my interpretation, there is a difference in the lasting change made in either text. Queen Elizabeth has to see her role as head of state differently to how she would like to. The people of the United Kingdom are demanding her to be lead them in their mourning of 'the people's princess' and she realises that she didn't understand her people as well as she thought she did. Her public address (despite her doing it reluctantly) is evidence of how things have changed and how she has had to shift her attitude as a leader to suit the people she leads. Priam has his moments of revelation and he and Achilles are able to see each other "as men". However, the bloodshed and killing continues. The moment of peace last for days only and there is a sense of symbolism in that it is Neoptolemus who slays Priam - the continuation of a rivalry and dispute. Consider how the convention was for Priam (and Troy) to seek revenge for Achilles' slaying of Hector, but Priam attempted "another way". This wasn't lasting though as Achilles' son slays Priam, thus the cycle of violence, hatred and revenge continues.
